Architecture Now! Museums

Star architects from Zaha Hadid to Herzog & de Meuron have shaken up the formerly staid world of museum architecture, bringing bravura to new buildings and extensions. But the trend for new museums to opt for bold contemporary architecture goes well beyond the stunning work of Renzo Piano or Tadao Ando. Many less well-known architects have also designed remarkable places to exhibit art and artifacts. Some have provoked controversy, like Mexican architect Teodoro González de León's University Museum of Contemporary Art on the sprawling UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) campus. Others have been warmly welcomed, like the sweeping, light-filled Art Gallery of Ontario Extension by Toronto-born Frank O. Gehry, his first commission in his native city. Others point out new horizons for reclaiming brownfield sites and reviving derelict industrial structures: Nicholas Grimshaw's conversion of a disused 1960s blast furnace into Horno 3, a welcoming extra gallery space for the Mexican city of Monterrey's Museum of Steel is a case in point. In Cartagena, Spain, Rafael Moneo's decade-long work on the Museum of the Roman Theater culminated in a structure that engages visitors in an archaeological manner, taking them on a tour of history as well as the site itself. Here then are more than 50 projects by the major talents pushing the limits of contemporary museum design, from established masters to the latest generation of brilliant architects.

Architecture Now! Bars and Restaurants

he latest architecture and design of restaurants and bars, from L.A. to Tokyo, is the focus of this book. Whether the challenge is merely placing furniture in a simple space, or an ambitious structural project, restaurants and bars are the sites of our most expressive architecture; more ephemeral than larger facilities or entire buildings, they are more apt to capture the mood of the times. From a skyscraper rooftop in Bangkok to a beachfront in Brazil, here are places where design, architecture, food and drink come together in inspiring combinations ranging from minimalist to extravagantly baroque. Designed and conceived like the enormously successful Architecture Now! books, this volume identifies the current trends bringing architecture and design together in new and exciting ways. Architecture Now! Vol.7 mi

TASCHEN's Architecture Now! 7 features an arching overview of today's architecture, from modern to radically avant-garde. As with previous books in the series, Architecture Now! 7 includes a broad variety of projects from around the world, as well as some works of art that have a direct relation to architecture, from the likes of Giacomo Costa or Shinro Ohtake. It also explores how the recent economic downturn has led to fewer large-scale projects, but has also stimulated creative thinking, as architects find new ways to work imaginatively inside budget constraints. Large-scale works include the futuristic Chinese Central TV Tower in Beijing (OMA) and the Burj Khalifa (SOM), the world's tallest tower and centerpiece of the Gulf region's most prestigious urban development to date. For anyone interested in the zeitgeist and building design in the 21st century, Architecture Now! 7 is an essential work of reference. Africa - Around the World in 125 Years

From Cairo to Cape Town In and out of Africa with National Geographic For over five generations, National Geographic magazine has dazzled and educated people with its incredible photographs and gripping stories from all corners of the earth. Inspired by our monumental Around the World in 125 Years, this volume curates around 200 captivating images sourced directly from the National Geographic historical archives, including 40 new photographs, that traverse the landscapes, history, cultures, and wildlife of Africa. Our continental journey through amazing Africa ranges from evocative early black-and-white pictures to autochromes, from the golden age of Kodachromes to digital. Along the way, we fly over the misty volcanoes of Uganda in a 1950s plane; follow archaeologists into the cool, musky tombs of Egypt; gaze up at the gleaming skyscrapers of Zimbabwe; admire the ritual masks of the Chokwe tribesmen of Angola; get lost in a labyrinth of alleys and souks in Algeria’s old quarters; wonder at the fragile red-tufted flowers of South Africa’s Drakensberg mountains; trudge behind Kenyan farmers as they battle clouds of flying locusts; and gingerly spy mountain gorillas enjoying the Rwandan sunshine. Long before the Travel Channel and Google Images, these images celebrated Africa’s spectacular landscapes, incredible wildlife, and diversity?but also reflect edgier stories that speak of rural hardship, environmental threats, and the lasting remnants of forced colonization. Leaving no stone unturned, this definitive voyage is in equal parts a breathtaking homage to an incomparable continent, and a unique tribute to the world’s most famous photography magazine.

New Media 25 kr

Artists have always been early adopters of emerging media technologies, from Albrecht Dürer and his use of the printing press in the 16th century to Nam June Paik's experiments with video in the 1960s. The advent of the internet as a popular medium catalyzed a global art movement that began to explore the cultural, social, and aesthetic possibilities of such new communication technologies—the web, CCTV surveillance cameras, cell phones, hand-held computers, and GPS devices. Focusing on New Media art as a specific art historical movement, this book explores its technologies, thematic content and conceptual strategies. New Media art often involves appropriation, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas and expressions, and frequently addresses issues of identity, commercialization, privacy, and the public domain. Many New Media artists are profoundly aware of their art historical antecedents, making reference to Dada, Pop Art, Conceptual art, Performance art, and Fluxus.

Big Book of Lofts

The origins of lofts can be traced back to the New York of 1950s: at that time, artists and bohemians in search of cheap places to live and work began to move into abandoned late-nineteenth-century industrial buildings. As such, they unknowingly created what we now refer to as the loft. This book provides examples from huge industrial spaces to small premises where architects have to take the fullest possible advantage of the spatial possibilities to create a feeling of greater expansiveness. The ideas come from some of the most renowned architects in the world, and they can be applied to a variety of spaces and interpreted in different ways to suit personal tastes and satisfy specific requirements.

Helmut Newton, A Gun for Hire

Helmut Newton once said, “Some people’s photography is an art. Mine is not. If they happen to be exhibited in a gallery or a museum, that’s fine. But that’s not why I do them. I’m a gun for hire.” (Newsweek, 02/02/04) This prosaic proclamation from one of the 20th century’s most celebrated photographers is not a little shocking, but nonetheless firmly positions Newton as the no-frills image-maker that he was. His work is so powerful, so striking, that it defies categorization. In refusing to call his work “art,” Newton leaves us free to do so, and judging from the amount of museum and gallery shows that have featured his work, it is clear that the option has been widely exercised. This book brings together a selection of Newton’s fashion catalog work from as early as 1962 through 2003 and his last editorial photographs for US and Italian Vogue—all work he made as a “gun for hire.”
