Archaeology: The Whole Story

There are many outstanding female photographers working today, yet the photographic industry continues to be a male-dominated world. Established in 2011, Firecracker (fire-cracker.org) is an online platform dedicated to supporting female photographers worldwide by showcasing their work in a series of monthly, online gallery features; by organizing events; and by awarding an annual grant to enable a female photographer to fund a project. Building on Firecracker's foundations, this book brings together the work of more than thirty of the most talented contemporary female photographers from around the world. Each profile explores the photographer's creative practice, illustrated by photographs that showcase a key project in her career, and a selection that offers a wider view of her work. The images encompass an eclectic variety of styles, techniques, and locations--from German Alma Haser's futuristic series of portraits that use origami to create 3D sculptures within the frame, to Egyptian Laura El-Tantawy's filmic and intensely personal series on political protest in Cairo. With more than 300 photographs, Firecrackers is a celebration of some of the most inquisitive, stylish, and daring photography being made today.

Commissioned in 1750, the Palazzo Venier was planned as a testimony to the power and wealth of a great Venetian family, but the fortunes of the Venier family waned and the project was abandoned with only one storey complete. Empty, unfinished, and in a gradual state of decay, the building was considered an eyesore. Yet in the early 20th century the Unfinished Palazzo's quality of fairytale abandonment, and its potential for transformation, were to attract and inspire three fascinating women at key moments in their lives: Luisa Casati, Doris Castlerosse and Peggy Guggenheim. Each chose the Palazzo Venier as the stage on which to build her own world of art and imagination, surrounded by an amazing supporting cast, from d'Annunzio and Nijinsky, via Noel Coward and Cecil Beaton, to Yoko Ono. Luisa turned her home into an aesthete's fantasy where she hosted parties as extravagant and decadent as Renaissance court operas - spending small fortunes on her own costumes in her quest to become a 'living work of art' and muse to the artists of the late belle epoque and early modernist eras. Doris strove to make her mark in London and Venice during the glamorous, hedonistic interwar years, hosting film stars and royalty at glittering parties. In the postwar years, Peggy turned the Palazzo into a model of modernist simplicity that served as a home for her exquisite collection of modern art that today draws tourists and art-lovers from around the world. Mackrell tells each life story vividly in turn, weaving an intricate history of these legendary characters and the Unfinished Palazzo that they all at different times called home.

Paper Monsters is a hands- on collage studio for young children. Budding artists can create seven collage pictures of monsters in cleverly designed paper pockets in the book. Slot the piece of collage card into the pocket so it shows through the monster- shaped window, and voila! A wonderful collage monster. Oscar Sabini's artwork is charming and characterful, inspiring young children to be creative and experiment with form and color.

The Anatomy of Colour is the definitive book on the use of colour and paint in interior decoration over a 300-year period.
