Zdá se, že v Čechách není tak bezpečno jako bylo dříve. Lupiči na Menším Městě pražském se nebojí uchýlit i k zabíjení a ze zchudlých šlechticů se stávají lapkové. Královský písař Jiří Adam z Dobronína je povolán do kanceláře nejvyššího purkrabího Jana z Vartemberka. Velmožův syn Jindřich byl v noci zavražděn. Zároveň však, jak mu purkrabí sdělí, už více jak před týdnem zmizel jeho nevlastní syn Jakub. V jeho ložnici se našel list, v němž stálo, že syn pána z Vartemberka dluží dvacet tisíc kop grošů, a pokud je nejvyšší purkrabí za něj nezaplatí, bude to Jakuba stát život. Nejprve nepřikládal Jan z Vartenberka zmizení přílišnou váhu a považoval ho jen za způsob, jakým z něj chce jeho zadlužený nezvedený nevlastní syn vylákat peníze.
