Gulliverove cesty
Swiftovým najvýznamnejším dielom, ktoré mu prinieslo obrovský úspech a nehynúcu slávu aj v ďalších generáciách, sa stal román Gulliverove cesty. Jeho plný titul mal niekoľko riadkov a začínal sa slovami Cesty do niektorých vzdialených národov sveta od Lemuela Gullivera... Na diele začal pracovať zhruba od rokov 1720 až 1721 a dokončil ho už pred augustom 1725.
Skladá sa zo štyroch častí, tzv. kníh. V prvej z nich sa lekár Gulliver vydáva na more a po búrke sa dostáva do krajiny maličkých ľudí, do Liliputu, v druhej sa ocitne v krajine obrov Brobdingnag, v tretej časti príde do krajiny veľkosťou normálnych ľudí Laputa, ktorí však žijú na lietajúcom ostrove a krajinu pod sebou bombardujú v prípade neposlušnosti kameňmi, iní sa zase venujú špekulatívnemu neplodnému výskumu (ako syntetizovať svetlo z uhoriek a pod.) a napokon v štvrtej knihe sa ocitne v krajine (mimochodom, bezmennej), kde vládnu múdre a racionálne sa správajúce kone zvané Hujhnhnmovia a ich podriadení sú divokí a agresívni Jahúovia podobní ľuďom.
Dielo vyšlo v rozličných prispôsobených či skrátených prekladoch. Úplný text predstavuje preklad Viktora Krupu z roku 1979. Možno povedať, že slovenský čitateľ v ňom dostáva text diela v adekvátnom a esteticky hodnotnom preklade, tak ako ho mali k dispozícii čitatelia originálu.
Dielo, ktoré dostávajú čitatelia do rúk, je napriek svojej jednoduchosti veľmi prepracované, štruktúrne aj kompozične zložité a bohaté svojimi témami a mnohými odkazmi na súdobé politické a historické udalosti. Autor v ňom kritizuje mnohé nešváry doby, korupciu a skazenosť politikov, napriek tomu nikde neskĺzne do lacnej komunálnej satiry. Aj preto je to dielo neobyčajne pútavé a napínavé. To je zrejme dôvod jeho mimoriadnej čitateľskej obľúbenosti, ktorá trvá už takmer tri storočia a zrejme bude trvať aj naďalej.

Když angloirský spisovatel a kněz Jonathan Swift (30. 11. 1667 – 19. 10. 1745) vydal roku 1726 pod pseudonymem Lemuel Gulliver knihu Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts, by Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships (Cesty k několika vzdáleným národům světa ve čtyřech dílech, napsal Lemuel Gulliver, zprvu ranhojič a později kapitán na několikerých lodích), později zkráceně Gulliverovy cesty, byla během týdne vyprodaná. Přinášíme vám první a známější dvě části tohoto satirického pojednání o lidské povaze a zároveň parodie na tehdejší cestopisy – Cestu mezi trpaslíky žijící v zemi Lilliput a cestu k obrům z Brobdingangu. Protože jde o poměrně složitý a dlouhý text, některé pasáže jsme upravili a zkrátili. K porozumění vám pomůže zrcadlový překlad do češtiny.
