Chaos Monkeys
An adrenaline-fuelled exposé of life inside the tech bubble, Chaos Monkeys lays bare the secrets, power plays and lifestyle excesses of the visionaries, grunts, sociopaths, opportunists and money cowboys who are revolutionising our world. Written by startup CEO and industry provocateur Antonio García Martínez, this is Liar’s Poker meets The Social Network.
Computer engineers use ‘chaos monkey’ software to wreak havoc and test system robustness. Similarly, tech entrepreneurs like Antonio García Martínez are society’s chaos monkeys – their innovations disrupt every aspect of our lives, from transportation (Uber) and holidays (Airbnb) to television (Netflix) and dating (Tinder) – all in search of the perfect business miracle.
Describing himself as ‘high-strung, fast-talking, and wired on a combination of caffeine, fear, and greed at all times’, García Martínez left Wall Street to make his fortune in Silicon Valley, becoming CEO of his own startup, before bailing and being poached by Facebook’s nascent advertising team. Here he turned users’ data into profit for COO Sheryl Sandberg and chairman and CEO Mark ‘Zuck’ Zuckerberg. Forced out of Facebook in the wake of a bitter internal product war, García Martínez took his unique brand of entrepreneurial hyperactivity to rivals Twitter. Along the way, he got into a lot of trouble with a lot of people, brewed illegal beer on the Facebook campus (accidentally flooding Zuckerberg's desk), lived on a yacht, raced sport cars on the highway, and enthusiastically pursued the lifestyle of an overpaid Silicon Valley mercenary.
In Chaos Monkeys he tells you HOW – and HOW NOT – to make a fortune through startups and digital marketing. Highly entertaining and always offering genuine insight, García Martínez unravels the chaotic evolution of social media and online marketing. From startups and credit derivatives to Big Brother and data tracking, social media monetisation and digital ‘privacy’, he shares both his scathing observations and outrageous antics, taking us on a subversive and very funny tour of the fascinatingly insular and unbelievably wealthy tech industry.

We Are Electric
A NEW SCIENTIST BEST POPULAR SCIENCE BOOK 2023
A NEXT BIG IDEA CLUB MUST READ 2023
A STYLIST BOOK TO BRING YOU WISDOM IN 2023
You may be familiar with the idea of our body's biome - the bacterial fauna that populates our gut and can so profoundly affect our health. In We Are Electric we cross the next frontier of scientific understanding: discover your body's electrome.
Every cell in our bodies - bones, skin, nerves, muscle - has a voltage, like a tiny battery. This bioelectricity is why our brains can send signals to our bodies, why we develop the way we do in the womb and how our bodies know to heal themselves from injury.
When bioelectricity goes awry, illness, deformity and cancer can result. But if we can control or correct this bioelectricity, the implications for our health are remarkable: an undo switch for cancer that could flip malignant cells back into healthy ones; the ability to regenerate cells, organs, even limbs; to slow ageing and so much more.
In We Are Electric, award-winning science writer Sally Adee explores the history of bioelectricity: from Galvani's epic eighteenth-century battle with the inventor of the battery, Alessandro Volta, to the medical charlatans claiming to use electricity to cure pretty much anything, to advances in the field helped along by the unusually massive axons of squid. And finally, she journeys into the future of the discipline, through today's laboratories where we are starting to see real-world medical applications being developed.
The bioelectric revolution starts here.

Álvaro Siza: The Function of Beauty
Alvaro Siza's work is recognized internationally for its beauty, simplicity, and gravity. The stark lines and geometric clarity of his buildings produce almost startling experiences of space. Among his earliest projects was a beach bathing complex in Matosinhos, just north of Porto, in which earthworks and a series of concrete walls define pools in the ocean that are enclosed enough to swim in but over which water can flow. This kind of a sensitive intrusion into a site, common to many of Siza's buildings, lends them the serenity of structures much older. Despite the timeless quality of his work, Siza's history is intimately bound up with that of Portugal. Included in this volume is a cooperative housing project he designed in Porto immediately after the 1974 revolution, about one third of which was built under the auspices of a newly-formed housing cooperative. 30 years later, Porto's city council decided to build the rest of the project and refurbish the existing houses. Both phases of building required multiple discussions between the residents and the architect, and reflect the changing political and social life of the country. All projects in this book are documented in full, with sketches, drawings, and photographs, and detailed descriptions by author Carlos Castanheira and Siza himself. Siza's architecture has been defined as continuously experimental; as this generously-illustrated volume makes clear, each of his designs responds creatively to its setting but his work as a whole retains a unity of form. In addition to residential, cultural, and infrastructural projects in Portugal, this book includes the Ibere Camargo Foundation in Puerto Alegre, Brazil, opened to wide acclaim in April 2008, and projects currently under construction including a mimesis museum in Paju, South Korea, as well as a cultural centre in Ceuta and a sports hotel in Huesca, both in Spain.

Source
nterior design has undergone a quiet but profound revolution in the last decade, as home-owners have become more aware of international influences and more prepared to experiment, to break out of the prescribed moulds of style. Many different parts of the world – in particular India, China, and Japan – have evolved their own unique styles of modernism, much of it rooted in the traditional principles of their particular regions, and this has helped to liberate the way we now think about dwelling space, its organisation and furnishing.
Drawing on a wide range of modern design from many countries, this unique, rich sourcebook takes an elemental approach to the design of a home. In an age when no interior design principle goes unchallenged and all ideas are possible, the only sensible approach is to start from the basic elements – how a home works and what we expect from it. The Source, illustrated with hundreds of colour photographs by Michael Freeman, is divided into four sections which each cover a basic function.
The first, Connect, deals with the connectivity of a home, from entrances and corridors to staircases. The second, Divide, shows the many ways in which individual areas can be divided and linked, from walls to screens and unconventional dividers, as well as flexible partitions that draw on Japanese and Chinese principles. The third section, Space, is concerned with living spaces in all their variety, balancing the twin needs of comfort and inspiration. The last section, Utility, covers the basic functions of any dwelling, from cooking and bathing to working at home and storage. All of this is illustrated by a vast array of ideas and solutions from many of the world’s best interior designers and architects. This new book offers a different and refreshing way of looking at the house and the elemental way of how we live today.

Sex To Sexty Va
Some call it the most vulgar magazine ever made; others see it as the last honest compendium of American sexual humor, starting just as the sexual revolution was expanding minds and stomping taboos, and ending when political correctness made all such
humor socially unacceptable. Whatever your stance, the magazine Sex to Sexty was and is an outrageous collection of dirty jokes and cartoons published from 1965 to 1983 by Texas entrepreneur John Newbern, whose life was lifted straight from the page
s of his publication. His partner in crime against good taste was hillbilly artist Pierre Davis, who created elaborate oil painted covers for each issue that celebrate every permutation of manly humor. No topic was safe from the lowbrow wit of these
two men and the cartoonists they recruited to preserve what they called the "True Jokelore of America". Sex to Sexty reproduces all 198 covers of the magazine and many of the original paintings that adorned them. Then, in the first in-depth analysis
of American sexual humor, author and editor Dian Hanson categorizes the great themes revealed by the thousands of cartoons and jokes into spreads with titles like "Stinkfinger," "Incest on the Best," "Cannibal Cuisine," and "I Love Ewe!" Raw, irrever
ent, uncensored and all-American, Sex to Sexty spares no gender, sexual preference, ethnic orientation, or hygienic dysfunction in bringing you what the magazine's original publisher called the "World's Largest Accumulation of He-Man Robust Humor in
the World." Special fold-out dust jacket shows every cover image and unfolds to reveal a poster of a never before seen, unreleased Sex to Sexty cover originally deemed "too tasteless" by the magazine's publisher, but definitely "suitable for framing
in your bar, rumpus room or bathroom".

Prokofiev Sergey
Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) composed some of this century's most widely loved music, be it the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" or his work for children, "Peter and the Wolf". Yet due to his itinerant lifestyle and the secrecy that cloaked his final years in the USSR, he remains one of the least written about or understood musicians of this century. At the St Petersburg Conservatory he soon gained notoriety as a gifted enfant terrible with his fiery piano-playing and 'modern' compositions. He became friends with many of Russia's leading cultural figures including Maxim Gorky, equally crucial were his relationships with the impresario Sergey Diaghilev and fellow composer Igor Stravinsky, who admired but were wary of Prokofiev's precocious talent.Prokofiev left Russia after the 1917 Revolution, and bedazzled western audiences with his hard-edged, virtuoso performances on the piano and exuberantly colourful scores such as the opera "The Love for Three Oranges" and his Third Piano Concerto. He then astonished the world by returning to the USSR in 1936 at the height of Stalin's notorious purges. Initially cosseted and feted by the Soviet state, Prokofiev was profoundly shaken by the arrest of several leading cultural figures as well as some of his friends. Against this terrible background Prokofiev composed some of his greatest scores, the First Violin Sonata and his Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6, before he himself was berated for writing anti-Soviet 'formalist' music in 1948. Demoralized, and suffering poor health, Prokofiev died five years later, ironically on the same evening as his chief persecutor, Joseph Stalin. This comprehensive biography, which contains several hitherto unpublished illustrations, combines an intimate portrait of Prokofiev and his circle with a lucid account of the political events that shaped his career.

Che Guevara 20 Postcards
This uniquely-packaged cigar box contains 20 postcards of the famous revolutionary Che Guevara taken by world-renowned photographer Rene Burri. This series of images of the revolutionary are the most intimate. This cardbox will be published one month after the publication of Rene Burri Photographs (January 2004) on the occasion of the launch of this stunning career retrospective featuring over 400 duotone photographs. Famous photographer and member of the prestigious photo agency Magnum, Rene Burri captured the famous revolutionary on film during an interview for the American illustrated magazine Look in January 1963. The interview between Che Guevara and journalist Laura Berquist was a battle of ideologies as Che tried to convince his US interviewer of the successes of the Cuban revolution. Burri's powerful images capture Che Guevara as a complex and intense figure: in several postcards we see him in repose at his desk in front of closed blinds which he demanded remain shut, in another postcard, we see him pacing the office in combat dress, another postcard features a contact sheet showing Che in debate. Also featured are sequences of images showing him by turns thoughtful, emotional, amused, tentative and always fully aware. The selection of postcards also includes Burri's iconic image of Che Guevara smoking a cigar which has been extensively reproduced on posters and t-shirts worldwide (row 3, column 1 in Sales Catalogue). This portrait of Che has become a universal representation of the legendary martyr, appearing on postcards and posters as a symbol of home-grown rebellion and anti-capitalism. Che Guevara made his last public appearance three weeks before Burri's photographs appeared in Look on 9 April 1963. His last public appearance was in May 1963 and he was executed in Bolivia in October 1967.

When the Facts Change
A great thinker's final testament: a characteristically wise and forthright collection of essays from the author of Postwar and Thinking the Twentieth Century, spanning a career of extraordinary intellectual engagement. Edited and introduced by Jennifer Homans.
Tony Judt's first collection of essays, Reappraisals, was centred on twentieth-century Europe in history and memory. Some of Judt's most prominent and indeed controversial essays felt outside of the scope of Reappraisals, most notably his writings on the state of Israel and its relationship to Palestine. There would be time, it was thought, to fit these essays into a larger frame. Sadly, this would not be the case, at least during the author's own life.
Now, in When the Facts Change, Tony Judt's widow and fellow historian, Jennifer Homans, has found the frame, gathering together important essays from the span of Judt's career that chronicle both the evolution of his thought and the remarkable consistency of his passionate engagement and intellectual elan. Whether the subject is the scholarly poverty of the new social history, the willful blindness of French collective memory about what happened to the country's Jews during World War II, or the moral challenge to Israel of the so-called Palestinian problem, the majesty of Tony Judt's work lies in his combination of unsparing honesty, intellectual brilliance, and ethical clarity. When the Facts Change exemplifies the utility, indeed the necessity, of minding our history and not letting cheerful fictions suffice in its place. An emphatic demonstration of the power of a great historian to connect us more deeply to the world as it was, as it is, and as it should be, it is a fitting capstone to an extraordinary body of work.

Titian
A leading artist in the High Renaissance, Titian (Tiziano Vecelli, 1488-1576) was the Venetian school’s greatest painter and is one of the best-loved Italian artists of all time. Titian was highly regarded during his lifetime, and his renown has not diminished in the intervening centuries&894 so great was his ability to manipulate color, texture, and tone that he is still considered to be one of art history’s greatest technical masters. The freedom exhibited in his pictorial compositions was unprecedented and greatly influential on later artists, notably Manet, who closely studied Titian’s work at the Louvre. This book examines Titian’s evolution, from his early years training under Giovanni Bellini to his later mature work, giving a wide perspective on the life’s work of this legendary master painter.

A rózsa neve
Krimit. Igazi nyomolvasást. A nyomok, persze, a tettes nyomai. Ami a rózsától a "tettesig" sötétlő homályt illeti, bizony válasz nélkül maradunk.

Workers. An Archaeology of the Industrial Age
Sebastiao Salgado's photo book classic Workers. An Archaeology of the Industrial Age (first published in 1993) pays tribute to the time-honored tradition of manual labor in the new millennium when machines and computers replace human workers throughout the globe. With images of striking beauty and integrity, Salgado composes a visual elegy for the working men and women, whose indomitable spirit has prevailed over the harshest of conditions to achieve a singular grace.
More than those of any other living photographer, Sebastiao Salgado's images of the world's poor stand in tribute to the human condition. Salgado defines his work as "militant photography", dedicated to "the best comprehension of human being"; over the decades he has bestowed great dignity on the most isolated and neglected among us - from famine-stricken refugees in the Sahel to the indigenous peoples of South America.
With Workers, Salgado brings us a global epic that transcends mere image making to become an affirmation of the enduring spirit of working men and women. In this volume, three hundred fifty duotone photographs form an archaeological perspective of the activities that have defined hard work from the Stone Age through the Industrial Revolution to the present. With images of the infernal landscape of an Indonesian sulfur mine, the drama of traditional Sicilian tuna fishing, and the staggering endurance of Brazilian gold miners, Salgado unearths layers of visual information to reveal the ceaseless human activity at the core of modern civilization.
Workers presents its subject on several interactive levels: Salgado's introductory text, written in collaboration with Brazilian author Eric Nepomuceno, expands his passionate photographic iconography; extended captions, also written by Salgado, provide a historical and factual framework. Honoring the timeless and indomitable spirit of the manual laborer, Workers renders the human condition with honesty and respect.
The Ultimate Ferrari Book
More than 300 pages to view Ferrari—the beauty, sexiness, the class, and artistic finesse of this phenomenon of exquisitely-designed lines. With illustrative photos from the archives of top photographers.
Stars from the world of automobiles, brand designers, and other international representatives explain and comment on the essence of the charm and quality of these racing cars from Maranello.
Success is not founded on miracles, but is almost always the outcome of a clear concept—the pinnacle of an ambitious, even stridently innovative idea. However, the aura of Ferrari does indeed get close to something miraculous. What lies behind this phenomenon? What is the source of fascination for a brand whose creative designs are internationally recognized and enthusiastically received? Firstly, the miracle of Ferrari, even today—70 years after the company was founded—is still largely explained only because of the personality of Il Commendatore, Enzo Ferrari. Patience, passion, and even a ruthless streak, at his own and others’ expense, gave the brand, under the emblem of the Cavallino Rampante, the power to develop into what it represents today: the ultimate and most fascinating thing on four wheels. Next, the long list of international racing victories ranks as equally important. During the last 70 years of Ferrari, no class or contest that wasn’t an instant win went unchallenged. Last but not least, Ferrari is almost synonymous with aesthetics, elegance, and trend-setting design. The intense degree of visceral and impassioned devotion is the genuine power of a brand and its products. The third and perhaps most vital element making the miracle of Ferrari real—a book that traces the evolution of the miracle, while also defining the essential elements of emotional attractiveness.
Based on expertise and the single-minded pursuit of a theme over several decades, and with the resources of cars and culture magazine, ramp, a team of authors working with editor-in-chief Michael Köckritz developed a novel idea for a series: In The Ultimate Ferrari Book, Ferrari enthusiasts will find 40 spectacular icons, all of them selected for their design. Describing the core elements of the contemporary craze for Ferrari and automobiles, in general, this book is a new and different treat for all ultimate fans.

Néztem a kicsavarodott végtagjaim a kocsi roncsai között, és csak figyeltem. Aztán pár pillanat múlva rám tört a pánik. A kutya! Édes Istenem a kutya! Se kocsi, se mentő, se kutya, se emberek." Shaping the Future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is changing everything - from the way we relate to each other, to the work we do, the way our economies work, and what it means to be human. We cannot let the brave new world that technology is currently creating simply emerge. All of us need to help shape the future we want to live in.
But what do we need to know and do to achieve this? In Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Klaus Schwab explores how people from all backgrounds and sectors can influence the way that technology transforms our world. Drawing on contributions by more than 200 of the world's leading technology, economic and sociological experts to present a practical guide for citizens, business leaders, social influencers and policy-makers this book outlines the most important dynamics of the technology revolution, highlights important stakeholders that are often overlooked in our discussion of the latest scientific breakthroughs, and explores 12 different technology areas central to the future of humanity. Emerging technologies are not predetermined forces out of our control, nor are they simple tools with known impacts and consequences.
The exciting capabilities provided by artificial intelligence, distributed ledger systems and cryptocurrencies, advanced materials and biotechnologies are already transforming society. The actions we take today - and those we don't - will quickly become embedded in ever-more powerful technologies that surround us and will, very soon, become an integral part of us. By connecting the dots across a range of often-misunderstood technologies, and by exploring the practical steps that individuals, businesses and governments can take, Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution helps equip readers to shape a truly desirable future at a time of great uncertainty and change.
