Anatomy of Violence
Why do people kill? Are some criminals born, not made? What causes violence and how can we treat it? In An Anatomy of Violence Adrian Raine draws on his own scientific research into the brains of murderers, psychopaths and serial killers to give a new perspective on these perennial questions. He reveals that, while anti-social behaviour is based on the complex interaction of genetics and environment, we can no longer ignore the evidence of strong links between biology and behaviour. Exploring how this could change the way we treat criminals in future, this revelatory book alters our understanding of our minds. 'A masterpiece. He has the research at his fingertips - not surprising, since he carried out much of it - and makes a compelling case that society needs to grapple with the biological underpinnings of violent crime.' Gandhi
A champion of civil rights and a leading light in India’s struggle for independence, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century. He is best remembered for continually challenging British supremacy through acts of non-violent civil disobedience, and he willingly subjected himself to prison for his beliefs. But he was a complex and controversial man, someone whose behaviour in his personal life – especially as a father and a husband – was often at odds with his own teachings. A master of conflict resolution, he was adept at forging alliances with his fiercest critics, yet he could be uncompromising in his treatment of family members and loyal followers.
This intimate pictorial biography unpicks the nuances of Gandhi’s life and character, charting his evolution from fun-loving schoolboy to the man revered throughout India as the ‘Father of the Nation’. Drawing on contemporary accounts and a myriad letters, documents, illustrations and photographs – including many which have rarely, if ever, been published – it reveals a man of contradictions, a fascinating personality whose complexities are sometimes obscured by the enormity of his achivements.

Babbitt
Since the 1922 publication of Babbitt, its eponymous antihero--a prosperous real estate broker and relentless social climber inhabiting a Midwestern town called Zenith--has become a symbol of stultifying values and middle-class hypocrisy. At once a conformist and a rebel, George F. Babbitt represents an ordinary man whose life turns upside down during one of the most profound sea changes in American cultural history: the mechanization and hucksterism of the Roaring Twenties. Babbitt, his family, and his social circle are the very essence of the American Dream in all its glory and emptiness, and their story is a stirring portrait of a way of life in profound flux. Babbitt remains one of Sinclair Lewis's most widely read novels. Contemptible and touching, frivolous and tragic, Babbitt is a rich, complex character whose legacy carries an eerie resonance to this day. Includes a new afterword by Azar Nafisi

Ted Hughes: The Unauthorised Life
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2015 SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE 'Gripping and at times ineffably sad, this book would be poetic even without the poetry. It will be the standard biography of Hughes for a long time to come' Sunday Times 'Captures the great poet in all his wild complexity. Powerful and clarifying, richly layered and compelling' Melyn Bragg, Observer Ted Hughes, Poet Laureate, was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He is one of Britain's most important poets, a poet of claws and cages: Jaguar, Hawk and Crow. Event and animal are turned to myth in his work. Yet he is also a poet of deep tenderness, of restorative memory steeped in the English literary tradition. A poet of motion and force, of rivers, light and redemption, of beasts in brooding landscapes. With an equal gift for poetry and prose, and with a soul as capacious as any poet who has lived, he was also a prolific children's writer and has been hailed as the greatest English letter-writer since John Keats. With his magnetic personality and an insatiable appetite for friendship, for love and for life, he also attracted more scandal than any poet since Lord Byron. At the centre of this book is Hughes's lifelong quest to come to terms with the suicide of his first wife, Sylvia Plath, the saddest and most infamous moment in the public history of modern poetry. Ted Hughes left behind him a more complete archive of notes and journals than any other major poet, including thousands of pages of drafts, unpublished poems and memorandum books that make up an almost complete record of Hughes's inner life, preserved by him for posterity. Renowned scholar Sir Jonathan Bate has spent five years in his archives, unearthing a wealth of new material. His book offers for the first time the full story of Ted Hughes's life as it was lived, remembered and reshaped in his art. It is a book that honours, though not uncritically, Ted Hughes's poetry and the art of life-writing, approached by his biographer with an honesty answerable to Hughes's own.

Art Brut Collection: Body
This third volume (after Vehicles and Architecture) in the series titled Art Brut The Collection
accompanying the Biennales de l'Art Brut, includes only works from the Lausanne Museum,
some of which have rarely been exhibited.
The book contains a large number of drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures,
reflecting the manifold representations of the human body in Art Brut, while paying close
attention to the intimate relationship the artists have established with their creations.
These works represent a sort of hand-to-hand combat; they are "battles" in which no quarter
is asked or given between the creator and his own image and unique personal history. For
some the body is the refuge of a complex intimacy, for others it is a prison from which to
escape or even a storehouse of energy that needs to be set free and transformed.
Rarely exhibited or published, Jean Dubuffet's prisoners' tattoos reveal how creations lying on
the margins of art's traditional subject matter held a magnetic attraction for the founder of
the concept of Art Brut, the core of the Lausanne Museum's collection. The great "classics" of
Art Brut, such as Aloise Corbaz, rub shoulders with more recent discoveries, such as Eric
Derkenne's body-faces, or the all-powerful "nuclear trans-sexuality" of Giovanni Galli. The
doubling of the self and a play of mirrors highlight the instinctive search for identity typical of
Josef Hofer and Robert Gie. Whether dismembered and fragmented in Giovanni Bosco's
work, or tightly gathered in cosmic unity in Guo Fengyi's creations, the body gives form to a
perpetual flux that art can exploit to express existential experience.

Eisenhower - A Life
Acclaimed historian Paul Johnson s lively, succinct profile of Dwight D. Eisenhower explores his life and enduring legacy In the rousing style he s famous for, Paul Johnson offers a fascinating biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower, with particular focus on his years as a five-star general and his two terms as president of the United States. Johnson chronicles Ike s modest childhood in Kansas, his West Point education, and his swift rise through the military ranks, culminating in his appointment as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces during World War II. Johnson then paints a rich portrait of Eisenhower s presidency, many elements of which speak to American politics today: his ability to balance the budget, his mastery in managing an oppositional Congress, and his prescient warnings about the military-industrial complex. This brief yet satisfying portrait will appeal to biography lovers as well as enthusiasts of presidential and military history alike."

Franz Kafka - The Poet of Shame and Guilt
A highly original and engaging appraisal of Kafka's life, work, legacy, and thought Franz Kafka was the poet of his own disorder. Throughout his life he struggled with a pervasive sense of shame and guilt that left traces in his daily existence-in his many letters, in his extensive diaries, and especially in his fiction. This stimulating book investigates some of the sources of Kafka's personal anguish and its complex reflections in his imaginary world. In his query, Saul Friedlander probes major aspects of Kafka's life (family, Judaism, love and sex, writing, illness, and despair) that until now have been skewed by posthumous censorship. Contrary to Kafka's dying request that all his papers be burned, Max Brod, Kafka's closest friend and literary executor, edited and published the author's novels and other works soon after his death in 1924. Friedlander shows that, when reinserted in Kafka's letters and diaries, deleted segments lift the mask of "sainthood" frequently attached to the writer and thus restore previously hidden aspects of his individuality.
