Prvý zväzok básnického diela Karola Strmeňa obsahuje už uverejnené prvotiny Výžinok života (Košice, 1943) a báseň Testament (1. vydanie Bratislava, 1944
, 2. vydanie Detroit, 1978). K nim sme pripojili cyklus Čo zostáva, do ktorého sú zaradené básne z nepublikovanej zbierky Bojovník (našla sa v pozostalosti Janka Silana) a nedokončenú epickú báseň Holuby (1945). Prvý, upravený spev tejto básne uverej
nil v r. 1974 v exilovom časopise Most č. 3-4. Tejto úprave sme podriadili aj ďalšie spevy. Báseň Testament uverejňujene v podobe, v akej už bola publikovaná - teda bez názvov úvodnej (Slovensku) a záverečnej časti (Večne). Všetky básne napísal na S

Legenda o grófovi Zrínskom II.
Zrínskeho legendu a postavu grófa Mikuláša Šubića Zrínskeho (1508 - 1566) osvetľuje autor v kontexte slovensko-chorvátskych vzťahov - preto aj v úvode Chrestomatie, ktorá je relatívne samostatnou časťou diela, na primárnu charakteristiku chorvátskeho a slovanského hrdinu používa text slovensko-chorvátskeho dejateľa Štefana Moysesa, ktorý je jedným zo symbolov spolupráce našich národov. Pre túto knihu nie je nepostatné to, že Moyses stať písal v Záhrebe na posilnenie ideovej bázy chorvátskeho romantizmu, čo znamená, že uvádzal aj fakty a súvislosti, ktoré u iných buď nenachádzame, alebo sú skreslené či marginalizované - preto Moysesov text je aktuálny aj dnes.
