Literárne debutoval v roku 1933 románom B?rnabo delle montagne (Barnabáš z hôr), po ktorom nasledovala séria úspešných románov a poviedkových kníh. Slovenskému čitateľstvu je známy najmä vďaka románu Tatárska púšť (preložila Michaela Jurovská, Slovenský spisovateľ, 1977) a knihe poviedok Sedem poschodí (preložil Stanislav Vallo, Slovenský spisovateľ, 2001). Vydanie knihy z verejných zdrojov podporil Fond na podporu umenia. Preklad tejto knihy vyšiel vďaka podpore talianskeho Ministerstva zahraničných vecí a medzinárodnej spolupráce.

Doctor Pascal

''There''s something of everything there, the best and the worst, the vulgar and the sublime, flowers, muck, tears, laughter, the river of life itself''Pascal Rougon has served as a doctor in the rural French town of Plassans for thirty years. He lives a quiet life with his faithful servant Martine and young niece Clotilde. Pascal is a man of science, striving to find the ultimate cure for all diseases. This puts him at odds with his niece, who is horrified by his denial of religious faith. Clotilde also distrusts Pascal''s lifelong ambition to create a family tree on scientific principles, based upon his theories of heredity. Tensions in the household are fuelled by Pascal''s scheming mother, Félicité, as the final episode in the great Rougon-Macquart saga plays out. Dr Pascal is the passionate conclusion to Zola''s twenty-novel sequence, and the most eloquent expression of the ideas on heredity and human progress that have underpinned it. Human relations are at its heart, as Pascal and Clotilde are bound ever closer by ties of family and love.

The Sin of Abbe Mouret

''I really don''t understand how people can blame a priest so much, when he strays from the path.''The Sin of AbbA© Mouret tells the compelling story of the young priest Serge Mouret. Striving after spiritual purity and sanctity, he lives a life of constant prayer, but his neglect of all physical needs leads to serious illness, followed by amnesia. No longer knowing he is a priest, he falls in love with his nurse Albine. Together, like a latter-day Adam and Eve, they roam through an Eden-like garden called the ''Paradou'', seeking a forbidden tree in whose shade they will make love. Zola memorably shows their gradual awakening to sexuality, and his poetic descriptions of the luxuriant and beautiful Paradou create a lyrical celebration of Nature. When Serge regains his memory and recalls his priestly vows, anguish inevitably follows. The whole story, with its numerous biblical parallels, becomes a poetic reworking of the Fall of Man and a questioning of the very meaning of innocence and sin. Zola explores the conflict between Church and Nature, the sterility of the Church and the fertility of Nature. This new translation includes a wide-ranging and helpful introduction and explanatory notes.

Miért hatalmaskodunk a kiszolgáltatottak felett? Miért vagyunk erőszakosak? Miért élünk vissza a bizalommal? A dán írónő Minden című novelláskötetében ismét olyan konfliktusokat helyez a középpontba, melyek mindnyájunkat érintenek, s életünk folyamán egész biztosan találkoztunk velük. A bosszú mikor elfogadható indíték, egyáltalán erkölcsileg elfogadhatóvá lehet-e tenni a bosszúállást?

A History of Sanskrit Literature

Taken in conjunction with the author’s Sanskrit Drama, this work covers the field of classical Sanskrit literature as opposed to the Vedic literature, the epics and the purdnas. To bring the subject-matter within the limits of a single volume has rendered it necessary to treat, the scientific literature briefly. And to avoid discussions of its subject-matter, which appertains rather to the historian of grammar, philosophy law, medicine, astronomy or mathematics, than to the literary historians. The mode of treatment has rendered it possible. For the first time in any treatise in English on Sanskrit literature, to pay due attention to the literary qualities of the kavya.

The Cosmological Doctors of Classical Greece

Why did some doctors in Classical Greece feel compelled to study the universe as a whole? How could cosmological principles be employed in clinical practice? This book explores the works of the cosmological doctors, such as On Breaths, On Flesh, and On Regimen, and argues that they form part of a much broader reorganization of medical knowledge in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. These healers used cosmological principles as a supplement to, rather than a replacement of, more traditional approaches to health and disease, creating theories about the cosmos whose obscurities can best be understood as the products of medical thinking. Through fresh readings of many ancient sources, the book revises customary views of the intersections between medicine and cosmology in Classical Greece and advances our understanding of one of the most remarkable periods in the history of ancient thought.

Essays on Literature and Philosophy

The first writer in Arabic to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, Naguib Mahfouz’s novels helped bring Arabic literature to an international readership. This collection of his early writing, from his time as a student of philosophy, reveals the intellectual ferment of the young author, grappling with two millennia of philosophers and writers and establishing his own voice among them. Available in English for the first time, these essays tackle a vast array of subjects, from Presocratic Philosophy to love and the sexual impulse. The intellectual development demonstrated here forms the foundation of Mahfouz’s literary work, granting insight into the mind behind such famed work as the Cairo Trilogy, and Children of The Alley.

Essays of the Sadat Era

When Mahfouz retired from his job as a civil servant in 1971 he took up an appointment as a member of the editorial staff at Egypt's Al-Ahram newspaper. Many of his novels were serialised in Al-Ahram; less well known, however, are the essays he also published through the newspaper. This fascinating volume brings together Mafouz's non-fiction writings penned during the era of Sadat, whose presidency comprised some of the most dramatic events in Egyptian history: from Sadat's "Corrective Revolution" to the Yom Kippur War with Israel and the eventual peace accord between the two countries, as well as his eventual assassination by Islamic extremists in 1981. In this collection Mahfouz deals with diverse political topics, such as socio-economic class, democracy and dictatorship, Islam and extremism - topics which still seem highly pertinent in relation to the situation in Egypt today. While Mahfouz's opinions are often considered to be obscured in his fiction writing, here we gain an extraordinarily clear insight into his personal views - views which helped shape his novels. Essays of the Sadat Era is the second of four volumes that will see Mahfouz's non-fiction work translated into English for the first time.

A čo slovenská tvorba?
