Viszonylag önállóan cselekszenek az eposz hősei, sorsukat alapvetően mégis az isteni hatalom akarata szabja meg. Sötét kicsengésű az Íliász mondanivalója, s csak helyenként csillan fel egy teljesebb emberségű élet reménye.
