Mlíkař je intimní příběh z dramatického období konfliktu v Severním Irsku. Osmnáctiletá hrdinka žije stejně jako všichni ostatní bez přestání pod drobnohledem okolí všichni sledují, s kým mluvíte, kam chodíte, co čtete, protože každé sebemenší gesto má svůj význam a napovídá, jestli jste náš, nebo patříte k nim, nebo jste zrádce. Když se o ni začne zajímat o hodně starší ženatý muž, mlíkař, známý účastí v odboji, nemá úniku v doslovném ani přeneseném slova smyslu. Není kam odejít a nemůže už hledat útěchu ani v četbě za chůze, ani v běhu po místních parcích mlíkař je všude a zlé jazyky se nezastaví.
Mlíkař je fantastický. Předčítala jsem si pasáže nahlas jen pro to potěšení z jazyka. Je to současně děsivé, srandovní, promyšlené i radostné.

Enigmatické variace

Kniha Na konci cesty (1958) bývá v díle amerického spisovatele Johna Bartha zařazována do existencialistické fáze, jež předcházela autorovu radikálnímu přestupu k vyhroceným postmoderním postupům. Hlavní hrdina novely Jacob Horner na radu doktora uniká před svou nerozhodností a nihilismem tak, že si v určitých životních momentech nasazuje masky: Před školním výborem se chová jako idealistický a práci oddaný učitel, jindy hraje nezodpovědného mladého muže či nevědomky napodobuje svého racionálního kolegu Joea Morgana. Hraní rolí ovšem není bez nebezpečí nevyhnutelným důsledkem je zaplétání se do mezilidských vztahů a odtažitý a cynický Jacob se náhle ocitá v komplikované situaci milostného trojúhelníku. Dává se unést přijímanou rolí a ztrácí vědomí vlastního já, což následně příběh nasměruje k tragickému konci. V jádru ironií prosyceného vyprávění tak stojí zdánlivá nemožnost rozhodovat se pro správné konání ve světě, jenž postrádá absolutní hodnoty.

In 1928 he published his first work, a life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and his first novel, Decline and Fall, which was soon followed by Vile Bodies (1930), A Handful of Dust (1934) and Scoop (1938). In 1939 he was commissioned in the Royal Marines and later transferred to the Royal Horse Guards, serving in the Middle East and in Yugoslavia. In 1942 he published Put Out More Flags and then in 1945 Brideshead Revisited. Men at Arms (1952) was the first volume of 'The Sword of Honour' trilogy, and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize; the other volumes, Officers and Gentlemen and Unconditional Surrender, followed in 1955 and 1961.
