Co šeptá srdce

Krátce poté umírá její ovdovělý otec a Clarissa s mladší sestrou odjíždí k příbuzným do Anglie. Tam je nucena dřít v hostinci otcova hamižného bratrance. Ačkoliv se kolem ní spřádá pavučina intrik a nenávisti, nehodlá se vzdát naděje na štěstí a lásku.

Negativní román
Nový počin Jana Švankmajera je „příspěvkem k čekání na velký český román“, čekání, které se v místní kotlině periodicky vrací, jako by snad onen „velký český román“ měl být spásou veškeré literatury, a nakonec i nás „nebohých“ Čechů samotných. V případě Švankmajera nemůže být větší ironie. Toto je kniha, která vznikla ze hry a nikoliv z ambice složit čtenáři k nohám literární dílo. Je to značně svobodný text, ale určitými parametry se románu skutečně blíží. Prvotní inspirace spočívala ve skupinové hře, kde se báseň jednoho autora převedla do jejího významového opaku. Vznikly tak tzv. „negativní básně“, ale možná by bylo výstižnější použít termín „tonálně převrácené“ básně. Na tomto hracím principu pak Švankmajer rozvíjí i svůj nový románový opus. Výchozím bodem je pro něj první díl nedokončené románové tetralogie Jeana Paula Sartra Cesty ke svobodě: Věk rozumu, který si jednoho dne náhodně vytáhl z knihovny.
Švankmajer „tonálně převrací“ děj i postavy Sartrova románu – tam, kde je u Sartra muž, u Švankmajera je to žena a podobně. Výchozí situace i dilemata ale zůstávají kupodivu stejná jako v Sartrově knize: nechtěné těhotenství je středobod, kolem kterého se všechno točí. Rozhodnutí, zda si žena dítě ponechá nebo podstoupí interrupci, má pak vliv na celý další život. Sartrovou knihou i tou Švankmajerovou se vine otázka po míře svobody, která je nám na světě určena a jak tato svoboda nebo také její nepřítomnost limituje naše bytí. Švankmajer ovšem k otázce svobody přistupuje odlišně než Sartre i existencialismus vůbec. Svoboda mu rozhodně není výsledkem našeho osobního „projektu“, ale je značně determinovaná. Dovětek k románu pak představuje hra s „ChatemGPT“, takže i v současnosti vzývaná „umělá inteligence“ tu dostane slovo. Negativní román se vymyká všemu, co lze v současnosti najít na „českém prozaickém knižním trhu“ a vstoupit do něj lze hned několika překvapivými vchody…
Posmrtný život Mal Caldery
Mal Caldera – bývalá rocková hvězda, která teprve nedávno pověsila své divočení na hřebík, černá ovce v lůně katolické rodiny – právě zemřela. Což jí osobně nijak zvlášť nevadí, však se smrtí koketovala už vícekrát. Trápí ji jedině to, jak se s tím srovná její mladší sestra Cris. Za každou cenu jí musí dát vědět, že to tentokrát neudělala schválně, že ji nechtěla tak náhle opustit, že nebyla tak sobecká. Což je hlavní důvod, proč to teď Mal na rozdíl od valné většiny duchů, na které zatím natrefila, neroztáčí v tančírně Strašín, ale hledá způsob, jak se s Cris spojit. Pomoct by jí mohlo zdráhavé a ostýchavé médium, mladík jménem Ren, jenže čím více času spolu stráví, tím častěji je napadá, jaké by bylo, kdyby se bývali potkali dřív, když ještě oba vládli vlastním tělem... Jenže zasahovat do světa živých může být pro duchy i pro lidi krajně nebezpečné.

Sci-fi povídky z jedné galaxie
Sbírka autora známějšího spíše díky jeho fantasy knihám obsahuje jednu hororovou a jednadvacet povídek žánru sci-fi. Ať se odehrávají ve vesmíru, nebo na naší planetě, vždy má zásadní roli vědecký a technický pokrok, pár kapek tajemna a samozřejmě člověk. Nedokonalý tvor s chybami a emocemi. Každá povídka má stručné autorské uvedení.
Pýcha a předsudek
Další vydání jednoho z nejčtenějších anglických románů, který ani po více než dvou staletích od svého vzniku nepřestává okouzlovat čtenáře na celém světě, vybavené více než stovkou kreseb dvou nejznámějších ilustrátorů z konce 19. století, s nimiž je tento román v anglosaském světě po mnoho generací neodmyslitelně spjat.
Román Pýcha a předsudek, který spatřil světlo světa v roce 1813, nás zavádí na malebný anglický venkov na sklonku 18. století, kde se odehrává příběh rodiny Bennetových. Paní Bennetová s neúnavným úsilím hledá pro svých pět dcer ideální nápadníky. Celý příběh začíná ve chvíli, kdy se do sousedství přistěhuje zámožný pan Bingley a zároveň s ním přijíždí i jeho tajuplný přítel, rezervovaný a nesympatický pan Darcy. Právě mezi ním a bystrou a svobodomyslnou Elizabeth, druhou nejstarší dcerou Bennetových, se zrodí zvláštní vztah, který musí překonat řadu omylů, nedorozumění, předsudků a společenských bariér, než se promění ve skutečné porozumění a lásku.
Pýcha a předsudek není ovšem pouhým milostným příběhem dvou lidí, kteří k sobě hledají cestu, ale i nadčasovou sondou do mezilidských vztahů. Autorka bravurně vykresluje napětí mezi rozumem a citem, jakož i střet mezi individuální svobodou a společenskými konvencemi a konformitou, a činí tak s inteligentním humorem, jemným vtipem a nenapodobitelnou ironií.
Obrazový doprovod k románu pochází z dílny dvou autorů – Hugha Thomsona a Charlese Edmunda Brocka.
Hugh Thomson (1860–1920) ilustroval román Pýcha a předsudek v roce 1894. Jeho ilustrace byly přetištěny v takzvané paví edici („Peacock Edition“), vydané nakladatelstvím George Allen. Tato edice, známá především motivem páva na přebalu, obsahovala celkem sto šedesát kreseb a dodnes platí za nejznámější ilustrovanou verzi knihy.
Ilustrace Charlese Edmunda Brocka (1870–1938) poprvé vyšly v roce 1895 v edici vydané nakladatelstvím Macmillan. Brock vytvořil celkem čtyřicet černobílých perokreseb, které jsou ceněny nejen jako doprovod ke klasickému textu, ale i jako samostatné umělecké dílo v duchu pozdně viktoriánského výtvarného stylu.
