With numerous and original archived materials, it goes through the character’s private and public experiences, such as his official speeches, his considerations on education, foreign policy and economics, the sense of the revolution and hope in “New Man”. Lastly, there is an a-temporal level with an intimist tone. It focuses on texts of a more personal nature, such as his diaries and letters to friends and family, and includes recordings of poems dedicated to his wife Aleida, in which doubts, contradictions and reflections take shape.

The Prisoner Letters of Nelson Mandela

In 1964, Mandela was taken to Robben Island Prison, where a stark existence was lightened only by visits and letters from family. After eighteen years, Mandela was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison, a large complex outside of Cape Town with beds and better food, but where he and four of his comrades were confined to a rooftop cell, apart from the rest of the prison population. Finally, Mandela was taken to Victor Verster Prison in 1988, where he was held until his release on February 11, 1990.
With accompanying facsimiles of some of his actual letters, this landmark volume reveals how Mandela, a lawyer by training, advocated for prisoners’ human rights. It reveals him to be a loving father, who wrote to his daughter, “I sometimes wish science could invent miracles and make my daughter get her missing birthday cards and have the pleasure of knowing that her Pa loves her,” aware that photos and letters he sent had simply disappeared. More painful still are the letters written in 1969, when Mandela?forbidden from attending the funerals of his mother and his son Thembi?was reduced to consoling family members through correspondence. Yet, what emerges most powerfully is Mandela’s unfaltering optimism: “Honour belongs to those who never forsake the truth even when things seem dark & grim, who try over and & over again, who are never discouraged by insults, humiliation & even defeat.”

In six weeks in the early summer of 1940, France was over-run by German troops and quickly surrendered. The French government of Marshal Pétain sued for peace and signed an armistice. Hudebník Josef Bobeš Rössler popisuje ve svých pamětech život v českém kulturním undergroundu 70. let dvacátého století. Jeho kniha je svědectvím o nezávislé kulturní komunitě, ze které vzešly výrazné osobnosti či skupiny české literární, výtvarné a nebo hudební scény. Rössler navíc nepíše jen tzv. pražském undergroundu, zmiňuje například i uskupení v severních Čechách a vedle osobností v undergroundu i mimo něj známých, jako je Ivan Magor Jirous, Pavel Zajíček nebo Vratislav Brabenec, připomíná mnoho dalších lidí, kteří český underground spoluvytvářeli. Obraz doby je psán hovorovým jazykem, což dokresluje dobovou i sociální atmosféru konkrétní pospolitosti a textu dodává punc neučesané pravdivosti.
Před devíti lety, kdy kniha vyšla poprvé, nebylo o kulturním undergroundu v Čechách publikováno mnoho memoárových textů, které by pobavily a současně posloužily k dokumentaci nezávislé kultury a běžného života v době komunistické totality. Kniha Josefa Bobše Rösslera byla jednou z pověstných prvních vlaštovek. V současnosti je situace jiná, o komunitě, jejíž kořeny sahají někde na přelom čtyřicátých a padesátých let minulého století a v nejrůznějších místech republiky ji reprezentovaly stovky, možná tisíce přívrženců, vycházejí vzpomínky i akademické studie. Rösslerova kniha je v tomto kontextu stále aktuální a nezbytnou součástí mozaiky, jež znázorňuje určitou etapu naší historie.

V sobotu 17. května 1969 zemřel v římském vyhnanství arcibiskup pražský a primas český Josef kardinál Beran. Uzavřela se tak pozemská pouť významné osobnosti české katolické církve a našich moderních dějin. Jeho život, úzce spjatý s osudem národa, dramaticky poznamenal nástup totalitních režimů. V době heydrichiády sdílel osud českých vlastenců - po zatčení gestapem postupně prošel věznicemi na Pankráci, v Terezíně, až skončil v koncentračním táboře Dachau, kde se po třech letech dočkal osvobození. Po válce, již ve funkci arcibiskupa, jej zachování mravních principů přiřadilo k ideovým nepřátelům komunistického režimu. Od roku 1949 byl izolován v domácím vězení pod stálým dohledem Státní bezpečnosti a od března 1951 jej komunistický režim držel čtrnáct let v internaci se záměrem vymazat ho z veřejného povědomí. Tento čin státní zvůle předznamenal perzekuční vlnu, která v následujícím období postihla celou katolickou církev. Ve stáří mu režim uštědřil ještě jednu osudovou ránu - poznal bezpráví nuceného vyhnanství. Ani po jeho smrti se komunisté nepřestali charismatického arcibiskupa obávat. Nedovolili převoz jeho ostatků do vlasti s obavou, že pietní akt přeroste v mohutné protirežimní demonstrace. Kardinál Beran měl podle záměru komunistů upadnout v zapomnění, navzdory tomu patří mezi nejvýznamnější morální autority v novodobé české historii.

Byl to můj osud
V roce 1999 se stalo vydání memoárů herečky Vlasty Chramostové (* 17. 11. 1926) událostí. A to nejen literární, ale i společenskou. Jen málokdo z umělecky exponovaných osobností poválečného období dokázal o své minulosti promluvit s takovou mírou otevřenosti, sebekritičnosti a pravdivosti jako ona a zároveň s takovou mírou nadhledu a tolerance k jiným. Čestní doktoři Univerzity Karlovy 1848-2015
Tradice udílení doktorátů honoris causa, na západoevropských univerzitách počínající už koncem 15. století, se na pražské univerzitě ujala poměrně pozdě a navíc z poněkud odlišných podnětů. Poprvé hromadně poctila řadu významných osobností čestnými doktoráty a čestným členstvím v doktorských kolegiích v roce 1848, aby dodala většího lesku jubilejním oslavám pětistého výročí svého založení. Udílením čestných doktorátů posilovala univerzita národní vzdělaneckou elitu, ale též zvyšovala vlastní mezinárodní prestiž. Při výběru kandidátů se až do roku 1945 střetávaly na univerzitní půdě často protichůdné nacionálně-ideologické názory a zájmy, a to i po rozdělení univerzity na českou a německou v roce 1882.
Autoři se snaží postihnout převažující názorové trendy v jednotlivých dějinných obdobích a zároveň i míru ovlivňování akademické svobody ze strany státu. Kniha je proto strukturována s ohledem na dějiny vysokého učení i na obecný společenský vývoj. Oslavy šestistého výročí založení Univerzity Karlovy, jejichž vyvrcholením měla být 8. dubna 1948 promoce čestných doktorů z řad významných zahraničních osobností, neblaze poznamenal nedávný únorový komunistický převrat, stejně jako celé následující období. K nápravě mohlo dojít až po listopadu 1989 dodatečným oceněním a převzetím diplomů.
Čestné doktoráty udělené 8. dubna 1998 v rámci oslav 650. výročí založení Univerzity Karlovy se již řídily zásadami zakotvenými posléze v novém řádu pro udělování doktorátů honoris causa z roku 2000: udělovat ocenění osobnostem, které se v mezinárodním měřítku zasloužily o rozvoj vědy nebo kultury ve prospěch lidstva a mají vztah k Univerzitě Karlově.
