Vincentův poslední obraz
Městečko Auvers-sur-Oise, dnešní okrajová čtvrť Paříže, 27. července 1890 navečer. Klopýtající Vincent van Gogh se vrací z pole, kam obvykle chodívá malovat. Ale tentokrát je něco špatně. Potácí se a drží se za břicho, smrtelně zraněný. Vrací se do svého pokoje v hostinci pana Ravouxe, kde o dva dny později před zraky svého bratra Thea umírá.
Vincentovými slovy „Zranil jsem se v polích…“ všichni rozumí, že se pokusil o sebevraždu, a tak to zůstalo zaznamenáno i pro další generace. Ale bylo tomu skutečně tak? Marianne Jaeglé nabízí překvapivě jiný pohled: Co když se známý malíř nepokusil zabít? Co když ho postřelili?
Životopisný román Vincentův poslední obraz na základě studií uznávaných historiků Stevena Naifeha a Gregoryho Whitea Smithe rekonstruuje poslední dva roky van Goghova života a podobně jako film S láskou Vincent z roku 2017 zpochybňuje zažité teorie o jeho tragickém konci.
Marianne Jaeglé ale ve své knize nepodává suchý výčet událostí, naopak čtenáři zprostředkovává jak vnější okolnosti Vincentova života, tak i niterný vhled do jeho duše. Čtenář se ocitá ve Vincentově kůži, pociťuje jeho křivdy a nepochopení, zažívá jeho extázi, ať už z barev nebe, pole, květin či jižního slunce, nebo z autentických drobností všedního života. Autorce se podařilo jakoby mimoděk popsat stěžejní van Goghova díla, jen pár slovy dokáže zhmotnit slavné obrazy včetně jejich předlohy.
Stejně tak jednoduše zachycuje třeba i Vincentův komplikovaný vztah s Paulem Gauguinem, který s ním několik týdnů pobývá v jeho žlutém domku v Arles, ale nakonec narychlo odjíždí a zklame všechny Vincentovy naděje ohledně kolegiálního partnerství a vybudování malířské školy.
Nový pohled na univerzálně známý příběh tak přináší průlom ve vnímání osobnosti slavného malíře. Bortí představu šílence s uříznutým uchem a přibližuje Vincenta van Gogha jako citlivého, plachého, asociálního člověka, výjimečného génia, umělce nepochopeného dobou a osamoceného uprostřed společnosti plné předsudků.

Szántó Piroska (1913–1998) Kossuth-díjas festő és grafikusművész volt, Vas István költő felesége. Tanulmányait az Iparművészeti Főiskolán kezdte, a Képzőművészetin folytatta. Első önálló kiállítását 1946-ban rendezte. Az ötvenes években nem állíthatott ki, könyvillusztrációkból élt. Prózaíróként a nyolcvanas években jelentkezett.
Nem pályázik írói babérokra, mondta, de élete során olyan élményekben volt része, amelyeket csak úgy bírt ki, hogy megírta őket. Szántó Piroska nagyon érzékletesen ír, jelenít meg helyzeteket, figurákat, eseményeket. Szinte filmszerűen pereg le előttünk a mozgalmas múlt század hatvan évtizede. Hogy Déry Tiborról, Vas Istvánról, esetleg egy nagykövetről, egy erdélyi menyecskéről, Aczél György lemezgyűjteményéről, „Vasnéni” sóletjéről vagy a család valamelyik macskájáról, netán egy útszéli feszületről van szó, majdnem mindegy: mindent és mindenkit illő figyelemmel ábrázol. Bacon concealed many important aspects of his life. He described himself as an asthmatic child in Ireland with foxhunting parents and a tyrannical father, but he was also rescued by a series of formidable women - women who in this biography emerge in their own right. He was never just a dissolute young man but was also a passionate reader, largely self-taught. Early on, influenced by Eileen Gray, he became a hard-working and ambitious designer, a brief career explored here in detail for the first time. He dreamed of remaking the modern room.
Bacon worked no less hard or ambitiously as a painter, at first with little success. Throughout the 1930s and early '40s he suffered ongoing failures, growing isolated and often ill. His health issues throughout his life were far more significant than he revealed. Then came his astonishing breakthrough in 1944, with Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion. In the following decades, he emerged as one of the great iconoclasts and bon vivants of his time, a Wildean figure whom one friend called 'a terrific grandee.' Bacon was typically celebrated as a sexual adventurer who liked rough trade, but he never stopped longing for a serious committed relationship, however painful. He continued to make disturbing images of the strangeness within, but developed into a more varied artist than has been recognised, creating in particular an extraordinary series of self-portraits. He was an artist who believed in chance and paradox: the iconoclast eventually became an icon.

By the beginning of the millennium, he returned to his Yorkshire roots, embarking on a new period of painting.
