The painter and poet Émile Bernard’s firsthand account of the beloved painter Vincent van Gogh’s life offers deep perspective into the Dutch artist’s process, artistic preoccupations, and difficulties. Anna Gablerová (1830–1903) si vedla deník bezmála celý život. Její zápisky, dochované ve třech objemných sešitech, tak skládají zcela mimořádnou mozaiku 19. století v Čechách. Neliterárním, avšak o to působivějším jazykem přibližují každodenní život její rodiny a blízkých, stejně jako události, které se později staly součástí „velkých“, učebnicových dějin. Je z nich možné vyčíst též mnoho o převládajících společenských stereotypech, představách, zvycích. A především o autorce samotné, která ke svému nelehkému údělu přistupovala s obdivuhodnou silou a houževnatostí.
