How Korean Corn Dogs Changed My Life

An addictive, tell-all memoir which is also a love letter to KoreaAged twenty-one, fuelled by a love of K-dramas and a need to find herself, Alice Amelia moved to Seoul. She knew no-one in her adopted country, didn''t speak the language, and hadn''t tried kimchi, let alone grilled cow intestines or Korean corn dogs. But she soon realises that real-life Seoul isn''t the romanticised city she''d watched on television - and it doesn''t have subtitles.Determined to follow her dream, Alice becomes everything she wasn''t in England: adding spicy gochujang sauce to every meal, dancing in K-pop videos, dating HOT Korean models, and even injecting salmon sperm into her eye bags. But as she breaks into the Korean entertainment industry which she idolised from afar, her life spiralled in ways she never could have imagined. Wanting to stay true to herself, she wonders, will she ever belong in Korea? And what price will it cost her to stay?

One Small Step

‘It was the bonds I made with people through running that helped me to feel like I belonged.’From childhood, Paul Sinton-Hewitt understood the intrinsic need for connection and belonging. After navigating the care system of South Africa in his childhood and enduring both his career and marriage breaking down years later, he turned to running as a lifeline. Longing for community and purpose, he had one simple idea: he would start a weekly run every Saturday morning in his local park. No prizes, no pressure, no fee. His only rule: he would always be there, whether anyone showed up or not. From the thirteen runners who joined that first weekend, Paul created parkrun, which has grown into a truly global community over twenty years and united millions of people from all walks of life. One Small Step is more than Paul’s inspiring memoir; it’s a blueprint for how coming together in simple ways can improve the health and happiness of millions worldwide.

Intensive Care

'Breathtaking' Irish Independent 'Powerful' Irish TimesINSIDE THE MOMENTS WHEN EVERY SECOND MATTERSIn these pages, Dr Suzanne Crowe opens the doors to a world few ever see: the charged and fragile realm of paediatric intensive care. From her earliest days as a junior doctor to becoming one of Ireland's leading specialists, she shares extraordinary stories of the children she's treated, the families who've loved them and the moments when life hung by a thread. But this is not only a book about medicine. It is about how the healing begins with a doctor bearing witness and being present. It is about what it means to offer hope when certainty is gone. At its heart lies the searing personal loss of Suzanne's own child, Beatrice - a grief that reshaped her as a doctor and as a person. Written with honesty and a clinician's eye for detail, this is a story of deep compassion and unflinching truth. A profoundly human memoir from a doctor whose work has touched many lives.

Hugh Trevor-Roper

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SECRET LIFE OF JOHN LE CARRÉ'A fine and serious biography which, on page after page, has made me laugh out loud' Sunday Telegraph'It is a long time since I have enjoyed a book as much as this one' Robert Harris, Sunday Times'It is impossible to praise Sisman's biography too highly' A.N. Wilson, ObserverClever, witty and cruel, Hugh Trevor-Roper was one of the most gifted scholars of his generation. As a young intelligence officer, he broke one of the German codes while taking a bath during an air raid. After the war, his solo investigation into the death of Hitler made him famous in his early thirties and rich enough to buy a Bentley. Ten years later he was appointed the most senior history professor at Oxford. He married into the aristocracy and was acknowledged as one of the most brilliant intellectuals of his time. But he failed to write the 'big book' expected of him and tainted his reputation when in old age he erroneously authenticated the forged 'Hitler Diaries'. The tragicomedy of his tenure as Master of Peterhouse forms a fitting finale to the story of a full and varied life.

Gertrude Stein

'Think of the Bible and Homer think of Shakespeare and think of me,' wrote Gertrude Stein in 1936. Admirers called her a genius, sceptics a charlatan: she remains one of the most confounding - and contested - writers of the twentieth century. In this literary detective story, Francesca Wade delves into the creation of the Stein myth. We see her posing for Picasso's portrait; at the centre of Bohemian Parisian life hosting the likes of Matisse and Hemingway; racing through the French countryside with her enigmatic companion Alice B. Toklas; dazzling American crowds on her sell-out tour for her sensational Autobiography - a veritable celebrity. Yet Stein hoped to be remembered not for her personality but for her work. From her deathbed, she charged her partner with securing her place in literary history. How would her legend shift once it was Toklas's turn to tell the stories - especially when uncomfortable aspects of their past emerged from the archive? Using astonishing never-before-seen material, Wade uncovers the origins of Stein's radical writing, and reveals new depths to the storied relationship which made it possible. This is Gertrude Stein as she was when nobody was watching: captivating, complex and human.

The Art of the Matter

The Art of the Matter - beautifully illustrated, and almost tactile in its language - is centred around the idea that art is where we go to discover the things we don't yet know. As well as its attention to painting, it also engages with the art of managing grief. It offers the reader a way of looking at endurance, both in terms of resilience and everlastingness. Art prompts a kind of expansion in the chest: we become more human, more curious, more alive when we are in the presence of a really great painting. Focusing on the relationship with her painter father, Claire Steele considers his works as posthumous conversations - dynamic, ongoing and full of mysterious surprises. Via a collection of meditative reflections on art, loss, landscape, home and belonging, she explores what it was like to be the child of an artist, and how to retrieve a sense of him from attention to his paintings.

Jacqueline Lamba: The Forgotten Surrealist

Jacqueline Lamba (1910-93) defied categorization. She is remembered only as the wife of André Breton, French poet, founder of Surrealism, but she was not just his spouse, she was a painter in her own right. A long overdue revaluation of her life and contribution to Surrealism has brought her out of the shadow into her rightful place. After divorcing Breton, she was married for 14 years to American sculptor David Hare. Lamba's extrarordinary life brought her into contact with many leading artists of the period: Leonora Carrington, Alberto Giacometti, Roberto Matta, Dora Maar, Yves Tanguy, Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera. And as Salomon Grimberg here reveals for the first time in previously unpublished letters, she had an affair with Frida Kahlo. Thanks to exclusive interviews with people who knew her throughout her life, Grimberg uncovers Lamba's complex personality: often impossible to deal with, she had a habit of destroying those of her paintings with which she was not completely satisfied. But enough works survive to make an impressive oeuvre, and Grimberg interprets her painting with an authority that makes this biography essential reading for anyone interested, not just in feminism and Surrealism, but in the whole history of art in the twentieth century. Written by an art expert previously the author of celebrated works on Frida Kahlo. Repositions Lamba as a leading light of Surrealism rather than a footnote to it. Plate section features numerous high-quality images of Lamba's finest extant works as well as photographs of Lamba with Breton, Dora Maar, Picasso and others.

Autobiography

Autobiography is one of the most popular of written forms. From Casanova to Benjamin Franklin to the Kardashians, individuals throughout history have recorded their own lives and experiences. These personal writings are central to the work of literary critics, philosophers, historians and psychologists, who have found in autobiographies from across the centuries not only an understanding of the ways in which lives have been lived, but the most fundamental accounts of what it means to be a self in the world. In this Very Short Introduction Laura Marcus defines what we mean by ''autobiography'', and considers its relationship with similar literary forms such as memoirs, journals, letters, diaries, and essays. Analysing the core themes in autobiographical writing, such as confession, conversion and testimony; romanticism and the journeying self; Marcus discusses the autobiographical consciousness (and the roles played by time, memory and identity), and considers the relationship between psychoanalysis and autobiography. Exploring the themes of self-portraiture and performance, Marcus also discusses the ways in which fiction and autobiography have shaped each other.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Lost

When Amelia Earhart’s plane disappeared in 1937, the clues poured in, attracting wild conspiracies about her tragic fate. In Lost, former National Geographic reporter Rachel Hartigan delves into Earhart’s disappearance, introducing a host of eccentric characters who have become obsessed with finding the truth. Did the great aviator crash land near the Marshall Islands, only to be captured by Japanese soldiers? Did she manage to land on Nikumaroro Island but die of injury or starvation? Or did she run out of fuel and crash into the ocea? nterspersed with the search for Earhart is the story of her extraordinary life: her unstable childhood, her itinerant early career, and how a PR-savvy publisher transformed her into an aviation icon and became her husband in an unconventional marriage. In the spirit of nonfiction blockbusters like The Lost City of Z, Hartigan draws us into the world of Earhart's devotees and unspools a beguiling tale. The theories lead Hartigan from the pilot's birthplace of Atchison, Kansas to an expedition on a remote Pacific Island, where forensic dogs attempt to recover a potential sample of Earhart’s DNA. As tantilising new evidence mounts, Hartigan and her fellow investigators descend deeper into a world of conspiracy and obsession. Through its irresistible characters and prodigious research, Lost reveals not just why we remember Amelia Earhart as a trailblazer and adventurer, but why unsolved mysteries keep us forever searching for answers.

Lula!

'richly rewarding' FINANCIAL TIMES'the definitive biography of Brazil’s president' MONOCLE'a valuable additional source for those following Lula, Brazil and Latin America' THE WEEKFrom the factory floor to the presidency: the extraordinary story of President Lula's fight to change Brazil In October 2022, Lula was once again elected President of Brazil, replacing the far-right strongman Bolsonaro, sparking an insurrection, and exiling the fallen demagogue to the US. Lula won by promising to save the Amazon and to give power back to the Brazilian people. This has long been the dream of Latin American left-wing movements - many of which have ended in corruption, disaster and death. Lula has survived at least three curtain calls. Imprisoned for corruption in the notorious 'Car Wash' scandal, voted out, bullied and beaten, Lula continues to draw huge crowds of workers wherever he goes. He speaks of revolution and comes from the streets of Sao Paulo, and yet he is enmeshed in hidden bank accounts and lobbying scandals. This is the definitive biography of Lula and the history of modern Brazilian politics that gave rise to him. Richard Lapper ran the FT bureau on Latin America for two decades, and lived in Brazil for many years. His previous biography of Bolsonaro was for many the best book on the so-called Trump of the Tropics. Lapper's unparalleled reporting and access allows him to tell the full story - which encapsulates so much of why Latin America's left-wing movements both excite and fascinate us in the West.

The Other Wes Moore

A powerful memoir from 'the Democrats’ most talented political newcomer since Barack Obama' (Time)'Spectacular . . . Wes Moore is a proper leader' George ClooneyTwo kids named Wes Moore shared much more than a name; they shared remarkably similar circumstances. Both grew up fatherless and had difficult childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and leading politician, while the other became a convicted murderer serving a life sentenc? es Moore, the author of this fascinating book, sets out to answer this profound question. In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also featured an article about a botched armed robbery in which a police officer had been killed. Two of the suspects had gone on the run. One was named Wes Moore. After following the case to its conclusion, Wes Moore wrote a letter to the other Wes, now a convicted murderer serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. His letter asked the questions that had been haunting him: who are you? How did this happe? hrough dozens of letters and prison visits, over the course of years, Wes discovered that the other Wes had had a life not unlike his own. Told in alternating dramatic narratives, The Other Wes Moore takes readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, and sheds a powerful light on modern America. 'I always walk away from a conversation with Wes Moore with a new perspective…new ideas...with a new way of seeing things...with a new burst of positive energy.' Oprah Winfrey

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
