Žil v Ríme, kde zasvätil svoj život službe opusteným deťom i mládeži, staral sa o chorých a chudobných pútnikov; pre nich založil v roku 1548 Bratstvo Najsvätejšej Trojice. Neskôr, v roku 1564 založil Oratórium – kongregáciu kňazov a laikov, ktorá má svojich nasledovníkov dodnes aj na Slovensku. Bol známy svojim vtipom, humorom a veselosťou. Zomrel v Ríme v roku 1595. Bol vyhlásený za patróna Ríma a detí.
