100 év - A trianoni Magyarország képes története
A kötet modern szemléletű politikatörténeti munka.
A történész a lezárt korszakok bemutatásának a mestere. A honi históriában jelenleg a Kádár-korszak vége e határ. Az utána következő évtizedekről is minden bizonnyal ő képes - ha a rokonszakmák eredményeit jól összegzi - a leghitelesebben írni, ám produktuma bizonyosan elmarad a lezárt korszakok ábrázolásának mélységéhez képest. Ezért az elmúlt évtizedekről itt az elbeszélés különösen szűkszavú.
The Ratline
As Governor of Galicia, SS Brigadefuhrer Otto Freiherr von Wachter presided over an authority on whose territory hundreds of thousands of Jews and Poles were killed, including the family of the author's grandfather. By the time the war ended in May 1945, he was indicted for 'mass murder'. Hunted by the Soviets, the Americans, the Poles and the British, as well as groups of Jews, Wachter went on the run. He spent three years hiding in the Austrian Alps, assisted by his wife Charlotte, before making his way to Rome where he was helped by a Vatican bishop. He remained there for three months. While preparing to travel to Argentina on the 'ratline' he died unexpectedly, in July 1949, a few days after spending a weekend with an 'old comrade'.
In The Ratline Philippe Sands offers a unique account of the daily life of a senior Nazi and fugitive, and of his wife. Drawing on a remarkable archive of family letters and diaries, he unveils a fascinating insight into life before and during the war, on the run, in Rome, and into the Cold War. Eventually the door is unlocked to a mystery that haunts Wachter's youngest son, who continues to believe his father was a good man - what happened to Otto Wachter, and how did he die?
Stručné dějiny stvoření
Kniha dvojice amerických autorů Stručné dějiny stvoření představuje historii západní vědy jako příběh hledání odpovědi na tu zřejmě nejzávažnější otázku, jíž se věda vůbec zabývá: Jak vznikl život?
Restaurant
The fascinating story of how we have gone out to eat, from the ancient Romans in Pompeii to the luxurious Michelin-starred restaurants of today.
Tracing its earliest incarnations in the city of Pompeii, where Sitwell is stunned by the sophistication of the dining scene, this is a romp through history as we meet the characters and discover the events that shape the way we eat today. Sitwell, restaurant critic for the Daily Telegraph and famous for his acerbic criticisms on the hit BBC show MasterChef, tackles this enormous subject with his typical wit and precision. He spies influences from an ancient traveller of the Muslim world, revels in the unintended consequences for nascent fine dining of the French Revolution, reveals in full hideous glory the post-Second World War dining scene in the UK and fathoms the birth of sensitive gastronomy in the US counterculture of the 1960s.
This is a story of the ingenuity of the human race as individuals endeavour to do that most fundamental of things: to feed people. It is a story of art, politics, revolution, desperate need and decadent pleasure. Sitwell, a familiar face in the UK and a figure known for the controversy he attracts, provides anyone who loves to dine out, or who loves history, or who simply loves a good read with an accessible and humorous history. The Restaurant is jam-packed with extraordinary facts; a book to read eagerly from start to finish or to spend glorious moments dipping in to.
It may be William Sitwell's History of Eating Out, but it's also the definitive story of one of the cornerstones of our culture.

Vše vypadalo zpočátku skvěle, jenže vzápětí vypuklo v Madridu protifrancouzské povstání a plamen odporu zachvátil celou zem. Pyrenejemi začala zuřit guerilla, nesmiřitelná partyzánská válka, a před ní si nebyl žádný Francouz jistý životem.
Autora pamětí, Jonathana Leache, lze s určitou nadsázkou nazvat „skutečný Sharpe“ – on a jeho muži byli předobrazem románového a později i televizního hrdiny Richarda Sharpeho.
Před očima nám ožívají vojenské události, krajina a lidé v širším kontextu dané doby. Kniha přibližuje českému čtenáři málo známé bojiště napoleonských válek viděné očima anglického důstojníka elitního pluku, se kterým došel přes Portugalsko, Španělsko a Francii až na pláně u belgického městečka Waterloo. Leachovy deníkové zápisky zařazuje do dobového rámce ve své předmluvě Jiří Kovařík. Charakteristiku 95. pluku ostrostřelců (Rifles) načrtl v úvodu překladatel Leonid Křížek.
Siege of Acre, 1189-1191
The first comprehensive history of the most decisive military campaign of the Third Crusade and one of the longest wartime sieges of the Middle Ages
The two-year-long siege of Acre (1189-1191) was the most significant military engagement of the Third Crusade, attracting armies from across Europe, Syria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Maghreb. Drawing on a balanced selection of Christian and Muslim sources, historian John D. Hosler has written the first book-length account of this hard-won victory for the Crusaders, when England's Richard the Lionheart and King Philip Augustus of France joined forces to defeat the Egyptian Sultan Saladin. Hosler's lively and engrossing narrative integrates military, political, and religious themes and developments, offers new perspectives on the generals, and provides a full analysis of the tactical, strategic, organizational, and technological aspects on both sides of the conflict. It is the epic story of a monumental confrontation that was the centerpiece of a Holy War in which many thousands fought and died in the name of Christ or Allah.
A vörös rémuralom Magyarországon
A kapitalizmus elpusztítása érdekében őrülten hamisították a pénzt. (...) Akiknek szent a demokrácia, a kultúra, az erkölcs, a jogrend, a haladás, a béke, a kereszténység, a tisztességes vagyonosodás, a szabadság és a liberalizmus uralma, fogjanak össze mind a bolsevizmus ellen, amely nem egyéb, mint a csőcselék terrorisztikus zsarnoksága az egész emberiség felett.
Világ népei, egyesüljetek - a bolsevizmus ellen!

American Oligarchs
The Trump and Kushner families arrived in America penniless. Their rise to the White House is a story of survival and loss, crime and betrayal-and the building of unimaginable wealth. Emerging from the famously corrupt worlds of New York and New Jersey real estate, two states that have come to define corruption in America, the Trumps and the Kushners ascended to the highest office in the land bringing the political cultures of these states into the Oval Office. Based on hundreds of interviews and over 100,000 pages of documents, audio and video tapes, many previously unseen or long forgotten, this electrifying work of investigative reporting shows how the families used grit, trickery and fraud to take advantage of post-war programmes that bolstered the middle class and then wielded the levers of political, prosecutorial and judicial power to amass and protect their enormous fortunes. In gripping detail, American Oligarchs documents the two families' labyrinthine web of illicit dealings and connections across the globe before, during and after the 2016 election, and how the Trumps and Kushners, once in power, have pushed America from democracy to the precipice of oligarchy and beyond.
Lotharingia
A Sunday Times History Book of the Year 2019
Shortlisted for The Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award
'No Briton has written better than Winder about Europe' - Sunday Times
In AD 843, the three surviving grandsons of the great Emperor Charlemagne met at Verdun. After years of bitter squabbles over who would inherit the family land, they finally decided to divide the territory and go their separate ways. In a moment of staggering significance, one grandson inherited what became France, another Germany and the third Lotharingia: the chunk that initially divided the other two. The dynamic between these three great zones has dictated much of our subsequent fate.
In this beguiling, hilarious and compelling book we retrace how both from west and from east any number of ambitious characters have tried and failed to grapple with these Lotharingians, who ultimately became Dutch, German, Belgian, French, Luxembourgers and Swiss. Over many centuries, not only has Lotharingia brought forth many of Europe's greatest artists, inventors and thinkers, but it has also reduced many a would-be conqueror to helpless tears of rage and frustration. Joining Germania and Danubia in Simon Winder's endlessly fascinating retelling of European history, Lotharingia is a personal, wonderful and gripping story.
The Age of Empires
Empires evoke potent images: Stanley, Livingstone and the colonial gallery of great explorers; the Spanish Conquistador's quest for gold and silver; and the Dutch heritage of trade in the East Indies. For over 500 years empires have been a feature of the political landscape and - a generation or more after the final collapse of most of the European Empires - the subject is still a major issue for historians. For some countries - Germany and Italy - overseas dreams were short-lived; for others - the United States and the Soviet Union - imperialist activity existed but was never accepted as an official state policy; and the disappearance of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires has obscured some of the imperial dimensions of these states.
This book shows how the maps of explorations, the chronologies of conquests, the records of settlers and administrators, the balance sheets of commerce and all else that made up the Age of Empires play a key role in explaining the global civilization of today.
Dressed For A Dance In The Snow
A poignant and unexpectedly inspirational account of women's suffering and resilience in Stalin's forced labor camps, diligently transcribed in the kitchens and living rooms of nine survivors. The pain inflicted by the gulags has cast a long and dark shadow over Soviet-era history. Zgustová's collection of interviews with former female prisoners not only chronicles the hardships of the camps, but also serves as testament to the power of beauty in face of adversity. Where one would expect to find stories of hopelessness and despair, Zgustová has unearthed tales of the love, art, and friendship that persisted in times of tragedy. Across the Soviet Union, prisoners are said to have composed and memorized thousands of verses. Galya Sanova, born in a Siberian gulag, remembers reading from a hand-stitched copy of Little Red Riding Hood. Irina Emelyanova passed poems to the male prisoner she had grown to love. In this way, the arts lent an air of humanity to the women's brutal realities. These stories, collected in the vein of Svetlana Alexievich's Nobel Prize-winning oral histories, turn one of the darkest periods of the Soviet era into a song of human perseverance, in a way that reads as an intimate family history.
Madness in Civilization
This ambitious volume, worldwide in scope and ranging from antiquity to the present, examines the human encounter with Unreason in all its manifestations, the challenges it poses to society and our responses to it. In twelve chapters organized chronologically from the Bible to Freud, from exorcism to mesmerism, from Bedlam to Victorian asylums, from the theory of humours to modern pharmacology, Andrew Scull writes compellingly about madness, its meanings, its consequences and our attempts to understand and treat it.
Z Brandejsa do Bruselu
A mezitím zážitky, někdy dramatické, jindy úsměvné, z nespočetných putování českou, slovenskou a francouzskou krajinou.
Bending Adversity - Japan and the Art of Survival
The second edition of the definitive book on how modern Japan works, now fully updated up to include the new 'Reiwa' Era and the year of the Olympics
'A superb book that, better than any other I have read, manages to get the reader inside the skin of Japanese society ... astutely observed ... a great read brimming with insights' Japan Times
Despite years of stagnation, Japan remains one of the world's largest economies and a country which exerts a remarkable cultural fascination. David Pilling's new book is an entertaining, deeply knowledgeable and surprising analysis of a group of islands which have shown great resilience, both in the face of financial distress and when confronted with the overwhelming disaster of the 2011 earthquake and resulting tsunami.
Bending Adversity is a superb work of reportage and the essential book even for those who already feel they know the country well.
Asperger gyermekei - Az autizmusfogalom gyökerei a bécsi nácizmusban
