The Second World War began on 1 September 1939, when German tanks, trucks and infantry crossed the Polish border, and the Luftwaffe began bombing Poland's cities. The Polish army fought bravely but could not withstand an attacker superior in numbers and technology; and when the Red Army invaded from the east - as agreed in the pact Hitler had concluded with Stalin - the country's fate was sealed. Poland was the first to fight the German aggressor; it would be the first to suffer the full murderous force of Nazi persecution. The Fortress - The Great Siege of Przemysl
In the autumn of 1914 Europe was at war. The battling powers had already suffered casualties on a scale previously unimaginable. On both the Western and Eastern fronts elaborate war plans lay in ruins and had been discarded in favour of desperate improvisation. In the West this resulted in the remorseless world of the trenches; in the East all eyes were focused on the old, beleaguered Austro-Hungarian fortress of Przemysl.
The siege that unfolded at Przemysl was the longest of the whole war. In the defence of the fortress and the struggle to relieve it Austria-Hungary suffered some 800,000 casualties. Almost unknown in the West, this was one of the great turning points of the conflict. If the Russians had broken through they could have invaded Central Europe, but by the time the fortress fell their strength was so sapped they could go no further.

"Majdnem 40 év után úgy látom, hogy az Erdély 1918-1919-ben című könyvem az utolsó hazai kommunista évtizedben úttörő kötet volt, témaválasztása miatt a hazai történetírásban, valamint az idegen megszállás alatt élni kényszerülő magyarok sorsával kapcsolatos tudományos kutatásban is.
S még egy utolsó, nem kevésbé fontos szempont: sajnos, e könyvem most is időszerű, ugyanis Erdély még mindig román megszállás alatt van, s a mindenkori román kormányok legalább akkora intenzitással nyomják el, soviniszta intézkedésekkel keserítik meg a még ott élő magyarok életét, mint a szintén soviniszta kommunizmus alatt. Amikor e könyvet írtam, azt hittem, hogy nemsokára fölbomlik a hazugsággal és nemzetközi megtévesztéssel, s végül (1918-1919-ben, majd 1944-1945-ben) árulással és fegyverrel összeollózott Nagy-Románia. Ez előbb-utóbb bekövetkezik, azonban addig még nagy küzdelmek várnak a Juhász Gyula által "világ árvájának" nevezett magyarságra.
Most könyvem harmadik kiadását tartja a kezében az Olvasó.
