Gramotnost, farní školy a výuka náboženství v Čechách na přelomu 17. a 18. století
Kniha je prvním pokusem o celkové zpracování problematiky farních škol v Čechách v pobělohorském období. Vychází jak z pramenů archivní povahy, tak i z dobových pramenů literárních. Počty farních škol v řadě regionů až dvojnásobně přesahovaly počty obsazených far, celkový počet míst, kde se kolem roku 1700 vyučovalo, je dokonce nepatrně vyšší ve srovnání s údaji z doby pozdní vlády Marie Terezie. Rozdíly mezi farními školami ve městech a na vesnicích byly ovšem propastné jak z hlediska materiálního zabezpečení učitelů, tak z hlediska stavu škol, ale i v oblasti úrovně výuky a počtu měsíců v roce, po které se vyučovalo. Naprostá většina učitelů měla na starosti kromě výuky také hudební doprovod bohoslužeb, pohřbů, křtů a svateb, mnohým však nezbývalo než si přivydělávat další prací jako zvoníci, hodináři, pastýři, sezonní podruzi apod. Děti se ve školách učily číst, psát, počítat, důležitou složku představovala výuka náboženství, mnohde kantoři směřovali své žáky i ke hře na hudební nástroje a ke zpěvu duchovních písní. Práce v zásadě potvrzuje tezi uvedenou v některých přehledech českých dějin o vcelku vysoké gramotnosti českého pobělohorského obyvatelstva.

It all started with a book that made me curious.
When rare books dealer Rebecca Romney found an emerald clothbound edition of Evelina by Frances Burney, she was happy to discover that she'd stumbled across a novel by one of Jane Austen's favourite authors. Inspired by the connection between the two writers, she returned to Austen's books with a new lens, picking out clues sprinkled throughout her works that pointed to the writers she had admired.
Austen read William Shakespeare, John Milton, Daniel Defoe, and Samuel Richardson, all authors Rebecca had read. But Austen also read Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Lennox, Hannah More, Charlotte Smith, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Piozzi, and Maria Edgeworth, all authors Romney hadn't. These female writers all sat proudly on Austen's bookshelf, but have disappeared from ours.
Romney became fascinated with these writers and wanted to answer three important questions: What were the stories behind the lives of these women? Why have they disappeared from our bookshelves? Who wrote them out of history? She had a mission, an obligation: she needed to collect Jane Austen's bookshelf.

„Přišli jsme za vámi, abychom vám sdělili, že vaše vycestování dnes bylo umožněno.“ S touto pro tisíce uprchlíků z NDR vysvobozující větou tehdejšího ministra zahraničních věcí Hanse-Dietricha Genschera z 30. 9. 1989 je Lobkowiczký palác, sídlo německého velvyslanectví v Praze, od té doby neoddělitelně spjat. Historická role tohoto barokního klenotu není nijak překvapující. Již více než 300 let panuje v tomto skvostném paláci na Malé Straně čilý ruch: Hrabata a knížata se procházejí sály, jako hosta domu ve své představivosti vidíme Ludwiga van Beethovena, po schodišti nahoru stoupá císař František Josef, aby se zúčastnil slavnostní recepce, a na banket v paláci očekávají i?prezidenta mladého Československa T. G. Masaryka. Budova je již dávno ve vlastnictví státu, když se zde po podpisu „Pražské smlouvy“ roku 1974 usadí němečtí diplomaté. Časem se mise, již s nedůvěrou ostře sleduje komunistická tajná služba, osvědčí jako místo svobody pro disidenty a kritiky režimu. Za soumraku studené války se pak televizní kamery z celého světa soustřeďují na ambasádu obleženou tisíci uprchlíky – v?památných dnech roku 1989 si nespočet Němců z NDR i Čechů spojí tento palác s?nadějí na lepší zítřek.
Tento bohatě ilustrovaný svazek líčí pohnutou minulost paláce a jeho význam jako sídlo velvyslanectví, nespouští přitom ani na chvilku ze zřetele česko-německé vztahy. Lobkowiczký palác není toliko jevištěm německých dějin. Je něčím mnohem větším, totiž symbolickým místem svobody, jež nám dává sílu a důvěru do budoucna.
