The Year 1000
When did globalization begin? Most observers have settled on 1492, the year Columbus discovered America. Italská bojiště byla vždy místy, kam generálové z Vídně rádi posílali pluky z českého království. Válka v roce 1859, v níž se rozhodovalo o sjednocení Itálie, je toho dokladem.
Masakr, který se odehrál na pláni a pahorcích u italské vesnice Solferino v červnu 1859, byl bitvou, která byla do rakousko-pruského krveprolití u Hradce Králové v roce 1866 druhou největší po bitvě národů u Lipska (1813). Itálii se poté otevřela cesta ke sjednocení a Prusko pochopilo, že Rakousko je natolik slabé, že bude možné otevřít otázku sjednocení Německa vedoucí k bitvě u Hradce Králové.
Třebaže se může z českého pohledu zdát, že se jednalo o cizí válku, skutečnost je diametrálně jiná, protože „tam u Solferina“ zůstalo nemálo Čechů a Moravanů. A také jejich utrpení se podílelo na vzniku Červeného kříže, jehož založení pár let poté bylo inspirováno právě obrovskými počty zraněných na obou stranách bojujících armád.

Kniha se zaměřuje na převratné společenské a politické změny, které charakterizují nejnovější dějiny Rakouska. Přibližně od druhé poloviny osmdesátých let minulého století se základní pilíře rakouské druhé republiky staly předmětem diskusí, reinterpretací a mnohdy též radikálního zpochybnění. Autoři vykreslují tento proces ztráty starých jistot na příkladech pěti případových studií. Jednotlivé kapitoly knihy se tak zabývají diskusí o minulosti (teorie oběti), proměnami rakouské zahraniční politiky v nové Evropě, migrací jako silou, která si vynucuje nové porozumění kolektivním identitám, privatizačním procesem, jenž narušil tradičně silnou roli rakouského státu a politiky v hospodářství, a nakonec změnami v politice samotné, především v oblasti politické kultury a volebního chování. Překotný vývoj Rakouska ve sledovaném období vykazuje řadu paralel s transformačními procesy, kterými procházely ve stejné době i bývalé země socialistického tábora ve střední Evropě. Živé pochodně v sovětském bloku
Tématem této historické monografie jsou politicky motivované případy sebeupálení v sovětském bloku v letech 1966 - 1989. Na základě historických pramenů autor napsal studii o tomto fenoménu a jednadvacet portrétů živých pochodní, u kterých je doložitelná minimálně částečná politická motivace. Celkem osm případů se stalo v Sovětském svazu (odehrály se na území dnešního Ruska, Ukrajiny, Litvy a Lotyšska), sedm případů sebeupálení se uskutečnilo v Československu, dva případy jsou z Rumunska a Polska a po jednom z východního Německa a Maďarska. Značná část z nich byla radikální reakcí na srpnovou okupaci Československa armádami pěti států Varšavské smlouvy a na potlačení pražského jara. Pro volbu sebeupálení jako formy radikálního protestu hrály zpočátku klíčovou roli případy vietnamských buddhistů. Od ledna 1969 mělo iniciační význam zejména sebeupálení Jana Palacha, které vyvolalo početnou vlnu následovníků nejen v domácím prostředí, ale také v zahraničí.
Diplomatem v půlnoční zemi
Tato kniha vás zavede do prostředí severní Evropy 17. a 18. století. V té době putovala do vzdálené „půlnoční země“ více než desítka diplomatických zástupců rakouských Habsburků, často v doprovodu početného služebnictva, šlechtických společníků, duchovních, agentů i rodinných příslušníků. Ke Švédskému království měli Středoevropané v mnoha ohledech specifický vztah – tradičně patřilo mezi nepřátele ve zbrani, vzájemný antagonismus pramenil rovněž z odlišného vyznání a mentální jinakosti. Stejně specifický proto musel být i přístup, který diplomaté k úspěchu své mise zvolili.
