Publikace analyzuje slovesnou složku českých lidových písní zaznamenaných v pěti sbírkách vzniklých na přelomu 18. a 19. století, jež na rozdíl od pozdějších sbírek nejsou ještě poznamenány romantizujícími zásahy upravovatelů. Zkoumá textovou výstavbu písní, jejich stylové kvality i užité jazykové prostředky a identifikuje strukturní vlastnosti, které korespondují s klíčovými vlastnostmi lidové písně, jimiž jsou udržování kontinuity na straně jedné a variabilita a proměnlivost na straně druhé. Práce zároveň poprvé přináší kritickou edici dvou rukopisných sbírek (Antonína Francla a Václava Hanky staršího). Protože obě sbírky obsahují jen texty písní, edice je doplněna o srovnávací nápěvový materiál získaný z jiných písňových fondů.
