What is Philosophy of Language?

Language is a major part of what makes us human. We effortlessly attach meaning to sounds and marks, in themselves meaningless, to convey to one another our beliefs, desires, intentions, and other states of mind. How is this amazing feat possibl? laudine Verheggen introduces readers to the fascinating study of language from a philosophical perspective. She sheds light on the nature of linguistic meaning by investigating two broad categories of questions: one concerns the relation between meaning and the extra-linguistic reality language users talk about, the other concerns the relation between meaning and facts about language users themselves. Verheggen explores the views of prominent philosophers and lays the foundations that help us to address questions in an array of other subdisciplines to which philosophy of language is relevant, from psychology to political theory. Throughout, she pays special attention to the many different ways in which words are used, asking whether language is fundamentally a social phenomenon and whether conventions are essential to it. Lively and accessible, built on a strong narrative structure, What is Philosophy of Language? is a key resource for any philosophy student or philosophically minded person with a passion for language.

Feminism in Africa

Raising feminist concerns about the struggles of African women amid debates surrounding the socio-cultural, economic and political future of Africa remains an immense challenge. Fatou Sow, the renowned Senegalese feminist activist and academic, illustrates here her own journey through a continuously developing global discourse. Her fundamental aim is to demonstrate the emergence and development of women's and feminist studies in Africa, highlighting its achievements, failures and, most importantly, its complexity. She argues that it is crucial to examine the influence of the patriarchy in light of Africa's historical matriarchal systems, which form the basis of the continent's social structures. Feminist research must also evaluate how gender intersects with age, class, ethnicity, caste, race and religious disparities, among other inequalities prevalent on the continent. As an African feminist, rooted in her African context and cultures, Sow is compelled to analyze conflicting realities, transformations and contradictions, as well as the complex contributions that are specific to different times and places. African cultures are not just relics of struggles against a colonial West, a West defined by domination. These cultures are primarily memories and living spaces that are deconstructed and reinvented daily, at every moment, with each generation, marked by triumphs and defeats.

The Wounded Church

Confronting racism, sexism, and clericalism in Catholic life and inviting real conversion and justiceIn The Wounded Church, theologian Annie Selak argues that the Catholic Church must confront its own injuries in order to credibly be the Church. Using a feminist framework, she develops a new ecclesiology around three wounds, racism, sexism, and clericalism, that actively harm the Body of Christ and distort its witness. Attentive to history, pastoral practice, and lived experience, Selak shows how each wound is both inflicted by the Church and borne within the Church. She offers the resurrected body of Jesus, scarred yet no longer bleeding, as a guiding metaphor for ecclesial renewal, a body that does not deny its wounds but is transformed through them. Drawing on Karl Rahner, she grounds hope in the reign of God while insisting on concrete institutional and spiritual conversion. Written for students and scholars, ministers and lay leaders, The Wounded Church uncovers overlooked histories tied to racism, sexism, and the clergy sexual abuse crisis, and proposes clear theological principles for reform. The result is a constructive, pastorally engaged vision that tells the truth about harm and imagines credible paths toward change, accountability, and justice.

Speed

Prepare to view the world through a new lens - SPEED - a groundbreaking exploration that challenges your perceptions of life's driving force, from the internationally bestselling author 'There is perhaps no other academic who paints pictures with numbers like Smil' Guardian In a world that feels like it's moving faster than ever, Smil examines how our relentless pursuit of speed - in areas such as production, travel and communication - shapes not only our technological landscape but also our social and environmental realities. And through engaging anecdotes and striking statistics, Smil challenges the assumption that faster is always better. He invites readers to reconsider the implications of our collective obsession with speed, and its intricate relationship with nature and innovation. For example, he highlights the surprising fact that erosion can actually accelerate mountain growth, and he points out that the rapid adoption of mobile phones - achieving 90 per cent penetration in just nineteen years - reflects historical patterns of technological adoption, suggesting that our world may not be moving significantly faster than in the past. Whether exploring the tiny mites that can traverse 300 times their body length in a second or the societal impacts of high-frequency trading, Speed invites readers to engage in a more balanced conversation about the role of speed in our lives, in an age defined by haste.

Churchill and the Crown

The story of Winston Churchill's long relationship with the Crown—from radical liberal under Edward VII to his last premiership as an old man under the young Queen Elizabeth II. Winston Churchill was born in a palace and was given a funeral worthy of a king. His family had enjoyed an intimate association with the British monarchy stretching back centuries. As King Edward VIII said of him, 'I have never met anyone of royal blood who exemplified in such high degree the ideal of the 'good king.' Churchill and the Crown tells the story of Churchill's relationship with the various kings and queens he served during his long political career, from young journalist under Edward VII, through his dramatic fall from grace in the First World War under George V, the frustrations of appeasement during the interwar period and his relationship with Edward VIII during the abdication crisis of 1936, culminating in his Finest Hour in the Second World War under George VI and the coda of Churchill's public service to his final monarch: Queen Elizabeth II. Ted Powell analyses Churchill's writings on monarchy and his role in preserving and establishing monarchies outside Britain. At the core of the book is a series of studies of Churchill's relationships with the monarchs he served. These studies offer a two-way perspective, examining both Churchill's view of individual monarchs and their attitudes towards him. They shed light not only on Churchill's career but also on the changing role of the monarchy in 20th century Britain.

The Sanctuaries and Cults of Demeter in Asia Minor and the Islands off Its Western Coast

At least twenty-two sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore in Asia Minor and the islands off the western coast are attested by archaeological evidence. More than 272 epigraphic sources, nearly all of which are translated and discussed in this study, further document the cults of both goddesses in these regions. This monograph is the first study to draw on such a substantial body of material in order to demonstrate the cultic connections between cities in the Greek East and other parts of the Greek world. The archaeological and written sources provide insight into both regional and Pan-Hellenic features of the sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore, including their architectural layouts, the iconography of votive offerings, festivals, rituals, and the development of these practices over time. In assessing these regional and Pan-Hellenic characteristics, the analysis draws on the full range of archaeological and written evidence from across the Greek world. The available evidence indicates that the cults and sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore in the Greek East largely retained Greek characteristics; however, in certain regions, such as Caria, their cults were partially shaped by indigenous religious traditions. Despite Greek and later Roman hegemony, the cult of Demeter in other parts of Asia Minor, beyond western Asia Minor, was unable to supplant the cult of Cybele and other local chthonic fertility deities.

No Name Bastard

Our most vivid memories can be our greatest teachers. There are moments that fade from our thoughts just as quickly as they occurred, and there are others that stay with us forever. These lasting memories are woven into the fabric of our being, etched into our DNA, and rooted so firmly in our minds that we can still sense every detail. Those experiences are where our characters and defining qualities are built and earned. However, if those experiences are challenging, it’s easy to get stuck in the struggle and become a victim to your past. Our histories are important, but the futures we create from them are immensely more crucial. So, how do we learn enough from our pasts to keep moving forward? How do we reflect on our lives in way that’s constructive, rather than restrainin? n her debut book, No Name Bastard, Tori DaCosta helps you to do just that. She vividly recounts a collection of her most unforgettable moments and the lessons she learned from them. DaCosta calls you to learn not just from her life, but from your own as well. The result is a vulnerable and inspiring text that will teach how to embrace life’s challenges and use them to become the best version of yourself.

1966

Propelled by social change, civil rights movements and technological advancement serve as beacons of hope and possibility.Yet, Cold War tensions, the escalation of the Vietnam War, and the space race between America and the Soviet Union project a different image. As China’s Cultural Revolution begins, and talks are initiated to reunify Germany, football has the potential to inflame ideological rivalries, unite old enemies, and allow nations to demonstrate their prowess on a global stage. Through the prism of the extraordinary tournament and the eight teams that reached the quarter finals – England, West Germany, Uruguay, Argentina, Portugal, Soviet Union, North Korea and Hungary – Michael Calvin provides a vivid portrait of a critical moment in world history.Examining the sporting, social and cultural significance of the competition and its backdrop, this hugely entertaining book brings to life a world and a sport caught in a tide of change, and shows how this critical year would change both forever. -'England’s one World Cup victory needed this book. The Paranoid Style in American Politics

The classic and very funny account of the dark side of American politics 'Calm, clear, dispassionate and devastating - and a joy to read' Harper's 'Brilliant and influential … his evisceration of populism has found a new generation of readers' Guardian 'American political life … has served again and again as an arena for uncommonly angry minds' How can a country be captured by rumours, surreal conspiracy theories and the most brazen of conmen? The historian Richard Hofstadter asked these questions in the 1960s, amid fears of rising extremism in America. Yet his dazzling dissection of the paranoid worldview - a brew of overheated exaggeration, suspicion and perceived victimhood that can derail entire nations - is a lesson for the ages in the seductive politics of the irrational. In an era where we ourselves feel assailed by endless paranoid public statements it is comforting to read Hofstadter's incisive refusal to see these as something new. In his discussion of famous and obscure untruths, some of which have profoundly impacted American domestic and foreign policy, he provides the antidote for the present day. 'The Paranoid Style in American Politics' was first published as an essay in Harper's Magazine in late 1964 and has been argued over ever since.

Through the Lens of Anthroposophy

What relevance do anthroposophy and the teachings of Rudolf Steiner have for the world today? Spiritual thinker Wolfgang Müller was initially sceptical that anthroposophy had any contemporary value. It wasn't until many years after his first encounter with the challenging and sometimes controversial worldview that a closer study of Steiner's writings prompted him to make a radical reappraisal. In this thought-provoking book, Müller explains how anthroposophy, far from being out of touch with the modern world, has important contributions to make towards our understanding of contemporary life. He shows, for example, how anthroposophy builds on the insights of natural science to explore the inner life of human beings, and how its progressive view of human spiritual development can help us better understand the world's religions. He looks at anthroposophy's approach to medicine, which takes into account both the physical and spiritual aspects of human beings, and goes on to consider Steiner's social and political ideas, which seek to bring our public spheres of culture, politics and economics into greater balance. Finally, Müller explores accusations of racism that have been made against Steiner in recent years and shows how they are fundamentally at odds with Steiner's view of a truly universal humanity. This book offers a balanced and well-researched contemporary perspective on anthroposophy from a former sceptic and will be of value to anyone looking for alternative ways of understanding our world.

The God of Wild Places

A pastor walks out of the church and into the woods, in pursuit of the God he's lost. Millions of Americans, disillusioned with organized religion, yearn for meaning and transcendence in their lives, and many of them are finding that in nature. When pastor and theologian Tony Jones, PhD, had his crisis of faith, brought on by personal trauma and broken relationships, he sought solace in the outdoors—paddling a canoe, hunting with his dog, butchering deer. When he walked out of the church and into the woods, he left the orderly pews and numbered hymns for chaotic spaces and untamed wilderness. And he re-discovered God — a God who brings peace in the midst of storms, a God who lives in the community of our fellow creatures, a God who's acquainted with death. This is the God of wild places. In The God of Wild Places, Tony mines his own experiences, recent research in evolutionary psychology, and ancient wisdom from various spiritual and philosophical traditions to fashion lessons about solitude, the predator-prey relationship, the importance of place, risk, failure, and death, and the chaotic presence of God. Tony's guidance in The God of Wild Places promises to introduce a generation of Americans to the transcendence available only in untamed spaces; his writing draws on wisdom from Christianity to Buddhism, Kant to Cioran, Jim Harrison to Annie Dillard. This is a journey of loss and discovery through forests and fields, lakes and streams, from knowing to unknowing, from finding to losing—from life to death, and then back to life. This new paperback edition features a fresh preface from Tony, reflecting on the book’s reception and the continuing search for the divine in nature.

MAIL ON SUNDAY'Immediately appealing . . . a welcome deepening of how we understand the human predicament and a pertinent antidote to the sometimes aggressive individualism of our time.' THE IRISH TIMES------The international bestseller. Our families shape who we are. From the circumstances of our conception and the family structure we are born into, to the expectations placed upon us and the love we receive, we are formed by our social and familial network. So if we want to truly know ourselves – to find out why we falter, to explain our anxieties, our repeated relationship patterns – we must look beyond our own lives and discover the secrets, unprocessed losses, and limiting beliefs of our parents, grandparents, and even to ancestors we have never met. In Inherited Fate, psychologist Noémi Orvos-Tóth invites the reader on a journey of self-awareness that spans generations. Illustrated with vivid stories and questions that invite the reader to engage personally, Inherited Fate is a fascinating framework for discovery of the self, the dismantling of inherited beliefs and the revelation of wisdom stored in the body. We cannot undo what has happened, but if we understand it, the past can help give a different shape to the present and to our future. Inherited Fate explores:the impact of the events surrounding conception and birth – such as the stress our mothers experienced during pregnancy, the expectations of our parents about our sex or our role in the family, or where we fall in the birth order;the far-reaching spillover effects of repressing trauma – both individual and collective;the deep marks left by the attachment pattern formed in childhood, and how it returns in the relationships of adulthood;how family secrets divide us, distort reality and destroy trust, even when they remain buried. ----‘Illuminating . . . When She Remembered

When She Remembered showcases an intertwined group of seven influential women, from well-known figures such as Simone Veil to memory activist Sabine Zlatin, who shaped the production of Holocaust memory in France from 1945 to the present. Most of these women began their memory work immediately after the war by testifying at perpetrator trials and when monuments were commissioned. In the subsequent decades, their work transformed from personal memory projects to large-scale, politically driven initiatives. Through decades of engagement with Holocaust memory, these seven individuals ensured the stories of Jewish women were featured in the greater wartime narrative. In doing so, they deliberately shifted the French discourse on the Holocaust away from a focus on victimization and resistance to female agency during the fight for survival under Nazi occupation. Alongside other activists, these women became political actors by pushing the state to reckon with the legacy of French complicity in the deportation of Jews. Pulling from diverse archival sources as well as material culture and oral histories, When She Remembered convincingly reveals why the themes of gender, resistance, and memory continue to resonate widely in French history.

The Price of Victory

The final instalment of N.A.M. Rodger's definitive, authoritative trilogy on Britain's naval historyAt the end of the French and Napoleonic wars, British sea-power was at its apogee. But by 1840, as one contemporary commentator put it, the Admiralty was full of ‘intellects becalmed in the smoke of Trafalgar’. How the Royal Navy reformed and reinvigorated itself in the course of the nineteenth century is just one thread in this magnificent book, which refuses to accept standard assumptions and analyses. All the great actions are here, from Navarino in 1827 (won by a daringly disobedient Admiral Codrington) to Jutland, D-Day, the Battle of the Atlantic and the battles in the Pacific in 1944/45 in concert with the US Navy. The development and strategic significance of submarine and navy air forces is superbly described, as are the rapid evolution of ships (from classic Nelsonic type, to hybrid steam/sail ships, then armour-clad and the fully armoured Dreadnoughts and beyond) and weapons. The social history of officers and men – and sometimes women – always a key part of the author’s work, is not neglected. Rodger sets all this in the essential context of politics and geo-strategy. The character and importance of leading admirals – Beatty, Fisher, Cunningham – is assessed, together with the roles of other less famous but no less consequential figures. Based on a lifetime’s learning, it is the culmination of one of the most significant British historical works in recent decades. Naval specialists will find much that is new here, and will be invigorated by the originality of Rodger’s judgements; but everyone who is interested in the one of the central threads in British history will find it rewarding.
