George Eisen kötetének különlegessége, hogy miután felhasználja a levéltári forrásokat, interjúkat és a kortárs szemlélők tanúvallomásait, túllép a hagyományos történettudomány keretein, és kutatja mind az áldozatok, mind a hóhérok politikai, kulturális, valamint pszichológiai motivációját.
Személyes felfedezőút is ez a könyv, mert a meggyilkoltak között ott volt a szerző két nagybátyja. Történetük rekonstruálása tisztelgés a többi húszezer áldozat sorsa előtt is.

Učebnica vychádza z právneho stavu k 1. 3. 2025.
V treťom vydaní vysokoškolskej učebnice Trestné právo hmotné – Osobitná časť autorský kolektív reaguje najmä na početné legislatívne zmeny, ktoré nastali po jej 2. vydaní, t. j. po 1.1.2018. Od posledného vydania, t. j. v priebehu šiestich rokov bol Trestný zákon novelizovaný 19-krát. Všetky legislatívne zmeny autori precízne zapracovali, doplnili aktuálnu judikatúru a aktualizovali prezentované štatistické dáta.
Obsahové členenie učebnice zodpovedá systematike osobitnej časti Trestného zákona. Nultá kapitola vysvetľuje vzťah všeobecnej a osobitnej časti zákona, vymedzuje rozsah a spôsob spracovania učebnice, ktoré vychádzajú zo súčasných cieľov výučby predmetu Trestné právo hmotné. V rámci tejto kapitoly sú analyzované aj osobitné kvalifikačné pojmy, ktoré najčastejšie odôvodňujú použitie vyššej trestnej sadzby. Vzhľadom na to, že tieto obzvlášť priťažujúce okolnosti sa opakujú vo väčšine kvalifikovaných skutkových podstát trestných činov, v kapitolách venovaných jednotlivým hlavám osobitnej časti Trestného zákona sa ich výkladu už autori nevenujú. Svoju pozornosť zameriavajú len na charakteristiku základných a privilegovaných skutkových podstát trestných činov. Súčasťou nultej kapitoly je aj podkapitola s názvom Trestné činy v štatistikách, pretože autori učebnice považujú za vhodné, aby študenti pri štúdiu osobitnej časti Trestného zákona mali aspoň základný prehľad o registrovanej kriminalite v Slovenskej republike.
Predmetom spracovania učebnice v prvej až dvanástej kapitole je analýza obligatórnych znakov skutkových podstát trestných činov uvedených v osobitnej časti Trestného zákona a výklad pojmov v nich obsiahnutých. V osobitnej časti je mnoho právnych noriem, ktorých dispozície odkazujú na inú konkrétnu normu alebo na viac noriem určitého druhu z iných právnych odvetví. Autori sa snažili v týchto otázkach redukovať výklad a nezachádzať do prílišných podrobností, vzhľadom na ich precíznejšie rozpracovanie v rámci iných právnych disciplín. Pri interpretácii ustanovení osobitnej časti Trestného zákona boli použité stanoviská k zjednocovaniu výkladu Trestného zákona a súdne rozhodnutia publikované v Zbierke stanovísk Najvyššieho súdu a rozhodnutí súdov SR, ktoré riešia súčasné aplikačné problémy, ale aj staršia, avšak stále aktuálna judikatúra.
Informácie obsiahnuté v učebnici môžu byť užitočné aj pre širší okruh záujemcov o trestné právo a môžu poslúžiť aj právnej praxi. Učebnica je však určená predovšetkým študentom právnických fakúlt na Slovensku. Autori, ktorí pri jej písaní využili svoje pedagogické skúsenosti, ako i skúsenosti z aplikačnej praxe, sprostredkúvajú študentom vedomosti v miere nevyhnutne potrebnej pre ich odbornú profiláciu v oblasti trestného práva a pripravenosť na pôsobenie v praxi.
Rozprava o metóde
Francúzsky filozof René Descartes (1596-1650) stojí na začiatku vývinu novovekej filozofie. Svojimi filozofickými ideami založil líniu novovekého racionalizmu. Svoje matematické a prírodovedecké myšlienky a stanoviská pôvodne vyjadril v spisoch Dioptrika, Meteory a Geometria, ku ktorým neskôr ako úvod pridal prácu Rozprava o metóde.
Na stránkach Rozpravy o metóde (pôvodne 1637, Leiden) Descartes formuluje základné pravidlá metódy, ako aj svoje chápanie vedy, metafyziky a morálky. Filozofické úvahy tu privádza k vymedzeniu postavenia, ktoré človek zaujíma v svete. K myšlienkam, ktoré tu Descartes vyjadril, sa dodnes obracajú nielen filozofi najrozličnejších smerov, ale aj psychológovia, antropológovia a kognitívni vedci.
K pozoruhodnostiam tejto knihy patrí, že ju Descartes napísal po francúzsky – v dobe, keď učené spisy vychádzali v spravidla latinčine, ho k voľbe francúzštiny zrejme viedol zámer obrátiť sa širšiemu publiku.
Nový fundovaný slovenský preklad Miroslava Marcelliho je doplnený jeho poznámkami.

Controlling Contagion
How human institutions—markets, states, communities, religions, guilds and families—have helped both to control and to exacerbate epidemics throughout history. How do societies tackle epidemic disease? In Controlling Contagion, Sheilagh Ogilvie answers this question by exploring seven centuries of pandemics, from the Black Death to Covid-19. For most of history, infectious diseases have killed many more people than famine or war, and in 2019 they still caused one death in four. Today, we deal with epidemics more successfully than our ancestors managed plague, smallpox, cholera or influenza. But we use many of the same approaches. Long before scientific medicine, human societies coordinated and innovated in response to biological shocks—sometimes well, sometimes badly. Ogilvie uses historical epidemics to analyse how human societies deal with “externalities”—situations where my action creates costs or benefits for others beyond those that I myself incur. Social institutions—markets, states, communities, religions, guilds, and families—help us manage the negative externalities of contagion and the positive externalities of social distancing, sanitation, and immunization. Ogilvie shows how each institution enables us to coordinate, innovate and inspire each other to limit contagion. But each institution also has weaknesses that can make things worse. Markets shut down voluntarily during every epidemic in history—but they also brought people together, spreading contagion. States mandated quarantines, sanitation, and immunization—but they also waged war and censored information, exacerbating epidemics. Religions admonished us to avoid infecting our neighbours—but they also preached against science and medical innovations. What decided the outcome, Ogilvie argues, was a temperate state, an adaptable market, and a strong civil society where a diversity of institutions played to their own strengths and checked each other’s flaws.

The Politics of Skin Tone
A nuanced examination of the salience of skin tone within African American politics. Research shows that skin tone is associated with significant differences in life experiences. On average, African Americans with darker skin earn lower wages, suffer worse health outcomes, and endure more negative criminal justice experiences than lighter-skinned African Americans. Nicole D. Yadon conceptualizes skin tone as one facet of the multidimensional construct of race that powerfully influences racialized experiences which, in turn, can influence political identities and attitudes. Drawing on evidence from one hundred in-depth interviews, multiple surveys, and a survey experiment, The Politics of Skin Tone investigates the political associations of skin tone. Yadon finds that skin tone correlates with political attitudes, particularly on issues where color-based disparities are especially pronounced such as criminal justice. Moreover, a sizable number of African Americans adopt a skin tone-based identity. In an era of shifting racial boundaries and growing color-based discrimination, The Politics of Skin Tone examines the implications for both scholars and policymakers.

Organizing Workers in the Shadow of Slavery
An original analysis of the relationship between slavery and the labor movement in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During the rise of the labor movement in the late nineteenth century, why were American workers unable to organize inclusive trade unions like those formed by their counterparts in the United Kingdom? Comparing American and British capitalism in the port cities of Baltimore and Liverpool and the steel cities of Pittsburgh and Sheffield, Rudi Batzell reveals that the answer lies in the legacies of slavery and entrenched structures of racial inequality. Strikebreaking succeeded more often in the United States because landless Black Americans were, out of economic desperation, more likely to become scabs and fracture the class solidarity of any union movement. Batzell shows, in short, how racism was and is deeply connected to class, migration, and capitalism in a global economy marked by slavery and empire. In emphasizing the geography of economic inequality, this book offers new clarity on the late-nineteenth-century successes and failures of working-class formation. More broadly, Organizing Workers in the Shadow of Slavery makes it clear that the pursuit of justice today will require sustained economic reparations for slavery and colonialism.
