China's Quest for Military Supremacy
China's military has entered a new era. Courts are often thought of as protectors of minority rights. What happens when the composition of courts changes such that politically disadvantaged groups expect a less favorable reception? This Element examines whether the increasing conservatism of the US Supreme Court during Donald Trump''s presidency changed the behavior of litigants and amicus curiae. The authors test whether membership changes led to reduced filings by individuals and organizations representing marginalized groups and increased filings by businesses and conservative states and interest groups. The authors find substantial reductions in participation by the most politically disadvantaged and substantial increases in participation by the most conservative groups.
Titans of Capital
Explores how fewer and larger investment companies now manage the excess financial wealth of the world''s 40 million richest people, to the detriment of everyone else and the global environment. Political sociologist Peter Phillips examines the global economy to demonstrate how networks of wealthy individuals have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic and how the financial investments of transnational elites threaten human rights and the future of the planet. Focusing on private capital investments, military spending, and the propaganda machine, he poses three key research questions: To what extent do the wealthy influence - or even dominate - decision making that affects all of us in society? Who are the most powerful people? How does the accumulation of capital work? Titans of Capital examines changes in the global economy during the past five years that demonstrate how networks of wealthy individuals have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the financial investments of transnational elites threaten human rights and the future of the planet. Private capital investments serve as the primary operating funds for international arms sales, private prisons, and other socially negative activities. These investments fuel the continued use of carbon-based energy leading to amplified global warming and climate change. Military spending is a critical component of continued wealth concentration and political power in the world. Spending on arms and intelligence is a required aspect of maintaining global power and control. Dealing with Russia, China, Iran and other ''rogue'' states is a continuing agenda for agents of the world power elites. Propaganda machines in Western capitalist governments serve to protect elite wealth by promoting military conflicts to open new regions for economic investment. Phillips warns that while continued concentration of global capital increases the profits enjoyed by the global economy''s ''Titans,'' it also increases global inequality, starvation, and civil unrest, threatening the lives of the hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty. It is imperative to ask how we can reverse the concentration of Titan wealth and revitalize grassroots democracy unbridled by extreme wealth. Identifying 117 global Titans by name and exposing the networks and interests that unite them provides readers opposed to militarism and committed to economic equality with crucial tools to directly engage the power elite who endanger life on earth.
State and Sub-State Nationalism in Southeast Asia
Nationalism is a political phenomenon with deep roots in Southeast Asia. Yet, state attempts to create homogenous nations met with resistance. This Element focuses on understanding the rise and subsequent ebbing of sub-state nationalist mobilization in response to state nationalism. Two factors allowed sub-state nationalist movements to be formed and persist: first, state nationalisms that were insufficiently inclusive; second, the state''s use of authoritarian tools to implement its nationalist agenda. But Southeast Asian states were able to reduce sub-state nationalist mobilization when they changed their policies to meet two conditions: i) some degree of explicit recognition of the distinctiveness of groups; ii) institutional flexibility toward regional/local territorial units to accommodate a high degree of group self-governance. The Element focuses on four states in the region ? namely Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Myanmar.

Revolution and Dictatorship
Why the world’s most resilient dictatorships are products of violent revolutionRevolution and Dictatorship explores why dictatorships born of social revolution—such as those in China, Cuba, Iran, the Soviet Union, and Vietnam—are extraordinarily durable, even in the face of economic crisis, large-scale policy failure, mass discontent, and intense external pressure. Few other modern autocracies have survived in the face of such extreme challenges. Drawing on comparative historical analysis, Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way argue that radical efforts to transform the social and geopolitical order trigger intense counterrevolutionary conflict, which initially threatens regime survival, but ultimately fosters the unity and state-building that supports authoritarianism. Although most revolutionary governments begin weak, they challenge powerful domestic and foreign actors, often bringing about civil or external wars. These counterrevolutionary wars pose a threat that can destroy new regimes, as in the cases of Afghanistan and Cambodia. Among regimes that survive, however, prolonged conflicts give rise to a cohesive ruling elite and a powerful and loyal coercive apparatus. This leads to the downfall of rival organizations and alternative centers of power, such as armies, churches, monarchies, and landowners, and helps to inoculate revolutionary regimes against elite defection, military coups, and mass protest—three principal sources of authoritarian breakdown. Looking at a range of revolutionary and nonrevolutionary regimes from across the globe, Revolution and Dictatorship shows why governments that emerge from violent conflict endure.
Politics of Random Selection
What should you do when you have decided to use the drawing of lots in a procedure? What practical questions arise? What options are available? What will the details be? What advantages and disadvantages should we expect from each option? What are the risks to know and the precautions to take?The literature on sortition consists of three main genres: monographs, arguments for and against, and history of the procedure in one or more dimensions. This book stands a little apart from this framework. Its method is largely deductive and theoretical in reasoning. It has a practical purpose which is aimed at specialists as well as naive users and interested parties: precise enough to satisfy an informed public and simple enough to be accessible to citizens and practitioners.Gil Delannoi begins with a general theory of political procedures and its relations with the typology of political regimes. Sortitive democracy is also studied as a third type distinct from the representative and direct types. Sortition is analysed through its main uses, effects, and objectives. Several detailed potential uses are proposed to political actors at the end of the book.Treating procedures like delicate flowers or rare birds is far from superfluous. To forget this aspect is to stick to generalities, to ignore crucial details.

In this groundbreaking work, McCarthy develops a political and social theory of institutional transformation rooted in the interconnectedness of finance and democracy.<br><br>Inspired by ancient Athens, where small groups chosen by lottery were used to ensure democratic participation, he shows how democracy and working-class power can be strengthened by introducing new forms of financial governance, focusing on the inclusion of historically excluded groups.<br><br>His proposals for democratic financial institutions point the way to imbuing finance with a socio-environmental purpose and the funding of a just green transition, social housing, and other necessary public goods. And these financial institutions might be the first step toward a whole new kind of economy.
External Validity and Evidence Accumulation
The accumulation of empirical evidence that has been collected in multiple contexts, places, and times requires a more comprehensive understanding of empirical research than is typically required for interpreting the findings from individual studies. We advance a novel conceptual framework where causal mechanisms are central to characterizing social phenomena that transcend context, place, or time. We distinguish various concepts of external validity, all of which characterize the relationship between the effects produced by mechanisms in different settings. Approaches to evidence accumulation require careful consideration of cross-study features, including theoretical considerations that link constituent studies and measurement considerations about how phenomena are quantifed. Our main theoretical contribution is developing uniting principles that constitute the qualitative and quantitative assumptions that form the basis for a quantitative relationship between constituent studies. We then apply our framework to three approaches to studying general social phenomena: meta-analysis, replication, and extrapolation.

This solution, which they call the Great Reset, means that mankind must be fully integrated and merged with a worldwide technological system, through the application of the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution—all for our own safety, security, and well-being. Most people probably associate the phrase “coup d'état” with a sudden, violent takeover, with tanks around government buildings, takeover of media channels, purges of dissidents, arrests, and so on. But this is not always the case. The usurpers can also seize power without violence, in a completely legal and democratic way, with the consent or even enthusiasm of the people, as evidenced in 2020. There are many “existential threats” (climate crisis, refugee crises, terrorism, pandemics, etc.) that can be used to establish a firmer and more centralized governance. This can be a gradual process, barely perceivable until it’s almost a fait accompli. In The Global Coup d'État, author and researcher Jacob Nordangård shares the history, describes the process, reveals the methods, and identifies the agents of this worldwide takeover so that we can take action before it is too late.
Symbolic Policy
Symbols are everywhere in politics. Yet, they tended to be overlooked in the study of public policy. This book shows how they play an important role in the policy process, in shaping citizens'' representations thanks to their ability to combine meanings and to stimulate emotional reactions. We use crisis management as a lens through which we analyse this symbolic dimension, and we focus on two case studies (governmental responses to the Covid-19 crisis in Europe in 2020 and to terrorist attacks in France in 2015). We show how the symbolic enables leaders to claim legitimacy for themselves and their decisions, and foster feelings of reassurance, solidarity and belonging. All politicians use the symbolic, whether consciously or otherwise, but what they choose to do varies and is affected by timing, the existence of national repertoires of symbolic actions and the personas of leaders.

Minden évszázadban van egy olyan háború, amely évtizedekre meghatározza a nagyhatalmi erőviszonyokat. A 2025 őszén íródott Csatatér Ukrajna nem pusztán a 2022. február 24. óta eltelt három év krónikája, hanem annak vizsgálata, hogy ez megmarad-e kelet-európai háborúnak, vagy "csak" a három elkövetkező nagy háború nyitánya. Az Egyesült Államok és Kína már ott ül a 21. század nagy asztalánál. Oroszország a szemünk láttára verekszi oda magát, a regionális hatalmaknak pedig el kell dönteniük, hogy melyik oldalra állnak. Az Amerika stratégiája című részben bemutatom azt a "21. század aranyára" épülő nagystratégiát, amellyel az USA egy újabb évszázadra betonozná be vezető világhatalmi pozícióját. Oroszország esélye a háború elhúzása és egy "visszautasíthatatlan" ajánlat, ami Pekingből, de akár Washingtonból is érkezhet. Brüsszel önsorsrontó politikája miatt az EU nem csak a megszokott jólétet veszítheti el. A fő kihívó Kína leginkább laboratóriumként tekint Ukrajnára. Vajon kifizetődik Magyarország stratégiai semlegessége? Ez a könyv nem a témában megjelent írásaim gyűjteménye, hanem kifejezetten a háború első három évében elindult folyamatok rendhagyó elemzése, és egy olyan kitekintés, amely reményeim szerint segít eligazodni az előttünk álló időszakban.
Krize republiky
Krize republiky je soubor čtyř textů, v nichž Hannah Arendtová zkoumá krizové události a vývoj politického života ve Spojených státech v 60. a 70. letech 20. století a jak tento vývoj ohrožuje americkou (a obecně demokratickou) formu vlády, nebo naopak jakým způsobem do ní zapadá. V úvodním eseji s názvem „Lhaní v politice“ analyzuje případ tak zvaných „Pentagonských dokumentů“, které odhalily taktiku rozhodovacích procesů na nejvyšších místech americké politiky během války ve Vietnamu, a zabývá se důsledky dnes tak aktuální proměny politiky v pouhou arénu, v níž dochází pouze k vytváření určitých obrazu a k budování vztahů s veřejností. Druhý text, který už svým názvem „Občanská neposlušnost“ odkazuje k eseji Henryho Davida Thoreaua, se pokouší o rozbor různých amerických protestních a opozičních hnutí na pozadí demokratického právního systému a americké tradice odporu a „sdružování“. V obecnější studii „O násilí“ Arendtová otevírá problém povahy, příčin a významu násilí v druhé polovině 20. století a jeho vztahu k moci, politice a válce. Doplňkem k této studii je závěrečný rozhovor „Myšlenky o politice a revoluci“. Ve všech těchto textech sice Arendtová definuje a objasňuje dobové zájmy a obavy Američanů, nicméně její závěry a poselství právě tak nadčasově zahrnují současné problémy demokratických politických systémů.
Obnovení světového řádu
Ve své první práci o dějinách mezinárodní politiky z roku 1957 se Kissinger zabývá diplomatickou historií Evropy od Napoleonovy porážky v Rusku přes sérii mezinárodních kongresů v letech 1814-1822 až po protiturecké povstání v Řecku 1822, které definitivně ukončilo již několik let slábnoucí britskou participaci na evropské politice. V centru autorovy pozornosti stojí aktéři mnoha desítek rozhovorů, konferencí a kongresů - rakouský kancléř Metternich a jeho protějšek, britský ministr zahraničí lord Castlereagh. Především na jejich osudech a názorech sledujeme, jak se habsburská monarchie po Napoleonově pádu postupně odpoutává od svého vnuceného francouzského spojence a přebírá vůdčí roli v evropské diplomacii a zároveň jak Británie prosazuje v protinapoleonské koalici své pojetí politiky rovnováhy v Evropě. Evropské státy se tehdy pokusily na troskách ponapoleonské Evropy vystavět nový mezinárodní řád, poprvé založený na pravidelných konzultacích a snaze nalézt jednotící politické principy. Kissinger jej analyzuje pod zjevným vlivem nedávno skončené druhé světové války, která postavila svět před velmi podobný problém jako napoleonské války Evropu. A neskrývá sympatie k pragmatické, neideologické politice Metternicha a Castlereaghe, hledající stabilní mezinárodní řád založený na rovnováze sil a vzájemných garancích.
Apoštol demokracie
V okamžiku svého úmrtí na počátku září 1948 byl Edvard Beneš valnou většinou československé společnosti vnímán jako hrdina. Bez ohledu na složité politické a kulturní reálie, aniž by lidé brali v úvahu jeho skutečný, ne vždy úspěšný životní příběh, nepředstavoval pro řadu svých spoluobčanů nic menšího než zosobnění odvahy, svobody, demokracie, dějinné spravedlnosti a historického zadostiučinění. Skutečného Beneše dalece převýšil mytický Beneš, do jehož podoby se promítla řada představ, idejí, snů, přání, očekávání, ale také sebeklamů, jimiž československá společnost v první polovině 20. století žila a které ji pomáhaly formovat. Tato kniha se prostřednictvím mytického obrazu Edvarda Beneše pokouší vykreslit právě ono mnohotvárné symbolické prostředí, jeho utváření, podoby a význam.

Nenávisť na Slovensku zašla až príliš ďaleko. Kontaminovala náš každodenný život. Podobne ako Samo Marec, ani ja neverím tomu, že nadpolovičná väčšina voličov predstavuje rusofilných hlupákov. Preto sa oplatí investovať čas a energiu do toho, aby sme sa o budúcnosti krajiny opäť spolu rozprávali.
