After Nations

'The twenty-first century’s counterpart to Hobbes’s Leviathan.’ EMMANUELE COCCIA What has happened to the nation-state? From a prizewinning writer, After Nations offers a sweeping history of this most unquestioned of modern structures and a bold speculation about its future. Until recently, the system of nation-states appeared settled and eternal. Not anymore. As American hegemony unwinds and Western countries slide into anxiety and debt, there is a resurgence of tyranny, imperialism and war. It is no longer clear that states can continue delivering ‘normal’ services, let alone defeat inequality and climate change. Even in rich countries, many feel they are being progressively neglected; in some parts of the world, populations are entirely abandoned by nation-states and must build systems of their own. Rana Dasgupta traces the formation and rise of the nation-state system to explain its multiple failures today. He takes us from the fall of ancient empires and the expansion of European concepts of money and law right up to the emergence of twenty-first-century tech firms – the first significant new geopolitical actors to emerge since the inception of nation-states – and the epochal restoration of Chinese power. He posits that the time has come to develop a new conception of citizenship, law, and economy—one that corresponds to our globalized and ecologically fragile condition. Richly detailed, urgent and told with remarkable clarity, After Nations is an essential text for anyone looking to understand why we seem to be losing our political hold on the world, and how we might try to restore it.

Kokoda 1942–43

An in-depth look at the battles at Kokoda, Milne Bay and Buna-Gona, which saw the Japanese battle the Australians and Americans on Papua. The Japanese invasion of, and ejection from, the Territory of Papua was a six-month long campaign. From July to September 1942, the Japanese, having landed at Buna, advanced towards Port Moresby along the Kokoda Trail (or Track). They were opposed, at first, by Australian militia and later by Australian veterans of the war in North Africa. In September, a Japanese operation intended to support the advance was defeated at Milne Bay. By November, the Japanese had been driven back to their starting point, where, in a two-month siege, American troops joined the Australians to eliminate the Japanese beachhead at Buna. With detailed maps, colourful artwork and period images, historian and Kokoda expert Dr Peter Williams examines the strategies and tactics of both sides, along with the limitations terrain, disease and weather imposed on the armies. It also covers the struggles of the American–Australian alliance, both at high command and on the battlefield. Along with Guadalcanal, the Papuan campaign marks the end of the Japanese advance in the Pacific, and the beginning of the Allied counter-offensive.

Why We Suffer and How We Heal

A groundbreaking guide to facing adversity by a world-leading psychiatrist and trauma expert. When we’re enjoying spring and summer, we don’t imagine that they’ll last forever. The same should be true for our own lives. Some survivors are unflappable, yet it’s not their optimism or grit that carries them forward, but their acceptance of life’s inherent instability. In her debut book, Harvard- and Stanford-trained child and adult psychiatrist Dr Suzan Song draws from her clinical practice, patient stories and research to help readers release their unrealistic longing for stability, using the three tools that allow us to weather life's stormiest seasons: narrative, ritual and purpose. Dr Song draws on the visual motifs of the ‘three friends of winter’ in Korean art – pine, bamboo and plum blossoms – plants that thrive even in the harshest of winters. For all humankind the universal ‘three friends of winter,’ are narrative, rituals and purpose. Why We Suffer and How We Heal will open us up to a new, heathier mindset and teach us to transform life's challenges into opportunities for growth and resilience.

Glimmerings

From award-winning authors and Yale Divinity School colleagues Christian Wiman and Miroslav Volf—two world-renowned scholars exchange letters on the problems of faith today and the presence of divine love that persists through it all. Whether you’re seeking something to believe in or no longer feel at home in your traditions, the spiritual search can be deeply lonely. In Glimmerings, leading Christian theologian Miroslav Volf and celebrated poet Christian Wiman engage the tensions of belief felt by many. In an exchange of personal letters, Volf and Wiman give voice to and validate the most pressing spiritual questions of our time. Close friends and Yale colleagues, they reveal through their letters visions of faith that are sometimes sharply divergent, yet always honest and punctuated by warmth, humor, and apology. The result is a vivid, consoling collection in which questions are dignified and the spiritual search in all its complexities is honored. Whether they’re discussing Scripture’s most problematic texts, Christianity’s most preposterous claims, or their own experiences of God’s presence and absence, Volf and Wiman are united in their shared refusal to oversimplify the realities of human pain. Instead, we are invited to share an honest hope: While certainty can never be ours, perhaps God shows up in “glimmerings.” As we accompany each other in our tensions, we can find strength in solidarity, beauty in mystery, and love that persists even as our faith perplexes.

Palestinians and Israelis

NEWLY UPDATED TO OCTOBER 2025What are the origins of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict? Why has it proved so intractable, and what are the implications of escalating tensions for both the Middle East and the worl? he conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is one of the most bitter struggles of modern times, with consequences that are felt around the globe. In this comprehensive, stimulating and fully up-to-date overview, Michael Scott-Baumann succinctly describes its causes and charts its history from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Adopting a unique approach, each chapter starts with a lucid explanation of the politics and ends with personal testimony from the diaries, interviews and memoirs of Israelis and Palestinians whose lives have been marked by conflict. By presenting competing interpretations from both sides, Scott-Baumann examines the key flashpoints of the twentieth century, including the early role of the British, the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the dramatic impact of the Six-Day War of 1967. The latter part of the book focuses on the nature of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, and resistance to it – a matter at the heart of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict in recent decades. The result is an indispensable account for anyone seeking to understand the context behind today’s headlines, including analysis of why international efforts to restore peace have continually failed.

Rousseaus Lost Children

Paris, 1777. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau receives a mysterious letter from a foreign visitor, Gavin Mulvany, asking whether the great man will take walks with him. Against his better judgement, Rousseau agrees. Might this strange man, who claims to be from the 21st century, be the true friend that Rousseau has been searching for his whole life? Paris, 2022. Gavin, a middle-aged academic, leaves his husband behind in Ireland to finish a long-delayed biography of Rousseau. While in Paris, he avoids work on his book by instead taking walks with Rousseau himself. As they wander the crowded streets of the eighteenth-century city, Gavin and Rousseau open up about certain past actions that have come to define them. Was Rousseau justified in abandoning his children? Should Gavin be forgiven for the terrible crime he committed to protect a man he once loved? Can talking and walking together lead both Gavin and Rousseau to finally be honest with themselves and their loved ones, and to a better understanding of what love, family, and society really mean? Rousseau's Lost Children is a thrilling epistolary novel cast across centuries, a bold and illuminating investigation into the boundaries of personal liberty and matters of morality, desire and loyalty.

Alive is a captivating investigation into our organs and the role they play in the stories of our lives. In Weston’s hands, a fuller and more human picture of our bodies emerges – more fragile, frightening and miraculous than we could ever have imagined.

The Rules That Make Us: How Culture Shapes the Way We Act, Think, Believe and Buy

Oliver Sweet is one of the world's leading business anthropologists. He works with brands like Coke, Ikea, Google and Dyson, as well as local councils and national governments, to reveal the secrets behind our decision making. Why do we do what we do? We might think it's our unique personality and individual differences that guide our choices, but more often than not, it's actually culture shaping our behaviour. From the ways we bring up children to the products we buy, the culture we live in creates who we are. In The Rules That Make Us, business anthropologist Oliver Sweet reveals the secrets to successful people-watching and how we can better understand consumers, voters and our relationships. His decades-long, trailblazing work uses cultural insights to help businesses, governments and NGOs achieve their goals - whether he's working with the Gates Foundation to encourage South African men to get HIV tests, helping a pet food company break into a new market in Brazil, or researching why 'nudge' techniques often backfire. Drawing on research conducted in thirty-five countries, Sweet maps culture's hidden rules: how they govern our behaviour, create our assumptions, even how they help us predict the future. The Rules that Make Us gives us a model for thinking about culture that reveals a new way of understanding our families, colleagues, customers and ourselves.

A High Price for Freedom

The author and director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library Publishing Project gives voice to long silent African Americans from the past, allowing them to tell their own stories that shed new light on critical moments in the Black Freedom Struggle, challenging what we think we know about Black history. History is at its best when new findings and perspectives challenge old ideas and notions about the past, and even overturn common wisdom. What if a former enslaved man in Galveston, Texas, witnessed the first Juneteenth and told a completely different story from what most of us know about that day? Why were slave ships most prone to rebellion, including those carrying the most African women? How has Islam found its way into R&B, soul, jazz, and other American popular music? Who was Benjamin Banneker, reall? n A High Price for Freedom, historian Clyde W. Ford addresses these and other questions, amplifying little-known voices from the African American past. In this wide-ranging, impeccably researched book, Ford begins with the 1656 court case of a woman named Elizabeth Key, who won a verdict for her freedom against her would-be enslaver—a victory that would forever change the nature, brutality, and course of American slavery. Ford examines a range of topics, from the role of women in fomenting slave revolts to an in-depth look at how Selma was not really about voting rights or even Martin Luther King, Jr, but about a twenty-six-year-old Black man named Jimmie Lee Jackson who was killed by an Alabama state trooper. As he laying dying in the only hospital that would treat Black people in February 1965, Jimmie Lee whispered to his nurse, a Catholic nun, “Sister, isn’t this a high price for freedom?”Eye-opening, enlightening, and often counterintuitive, this fascinating history includes compelling, heartrending, and factual accounts about people and events in the African American past that teach us things we never learned and challenge the stories we thought we knew.

Beneath Flanders Fields

‘A fascinating and brilliantly illustrated book, an invaluable guide for future generations of Great War archaeologists.’ – Times Higher Education SupplementWhilst the war raged across Flanders fields, an equally horrifying and sometimes more dangerous battle took place underground. Beneath Flanders Fields tells the story of the tunnellers’ war, which still remains one of the most misunderstood, misrepresented and mystifying conflicts of the Great War. A wealth of personal testimonies reveal the engineering, technology and science behind how this most intense of battles was fought – and won. They speak of how the tunnellers lived a relentless existence in the depths of the battlefield for almost two and a half years, enduring physical and mental stresses that were often more extreme than their infantry counterparts. Their lives were reduced to a complex war of silence, tension and claustrophobia, leading up to the most dramatic mine offensive in history launched on 7 June 1917 at Messines Ridge. Yet, Messines was not the end of their story, which continued with the crafting of a whole underground world of headquarters, cookhouses and hospitals, housing the innumerable troops who passed through this part of the Western Front. Here, this extraordinary, hidden world is revealed and the fragile legacy it has left behind on Flanders fields is brought to light.
