Super Agers

In this breakthrough moment in the history of human health care, Super Agers is an evidenced-based guide to the revolution transforming human longevity. From his unique position as a leader overseeing millions in research funding, Dr Topol explains how you can benefit from new the treatments becoming available at a faster rate than ever, and the fundamental reasons - from semaglutides to AI - that we can be confident these breakthroughs will continue. More than a quarter of the adult population lives with two or more chronic diseases, with that figure increasing to over half in individuals aged 65 and older. Dr Topol explains the power of the new approaches to the worst chronic killers - diabetes/obesity, heart disease, cancer, and neurodegeneration-and how treatments can begin long before middle age, and even long after. In thirty years, we will have five times as many people at least one hundred years old and they will be healthier than ever because of the breakthroughs Super Agers describes. These remarkable discoveries are deeply inspiring about our human potential. We can now realistically see how we can make considerable headway for preventing age-related diseases and may one day be able to slow the body-wide aging process itself. 'Imagine a world where diseases once thought incurable are treated, where we are healthier for longer. This future is getting close thanks to a radical convergence of AI and bioscience. In this gripping, vitally important and meticulously researched account, Eric Topol reveals the extraordinary breakthroughs that are transforming medicine-and our lives.' Make Believe

Make Believe is bestselling children’s author Mac Barnett’s rallying cry for art and imagination, and a celebration of the power of storytelling in all our lives. It’s an incisive, intimate, and timely invitation to approach children’s literature not only as an art form worthy of deep study and criticism, but as a portal into the lives of the children. And at a time when we are faced with a national literacy crisis, he champions the profound joys of literature and the importance of reading for pleasure. What if children are a great audience for art? What if they are in fact better equipped to engage deeply with stories than adults? What if humans’ ability to appreciate art is, if not innate, awakened early in childhood? Well, then we’d better do our best to make some good kids’ books. Written with humor and academic rigor, Make Believe reads like a letter from your smartest and funniest friend. Includes spreads from Goodnight Moon and Busy, Busy Town, illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Jon Klassen, and cover art by celebrated illustrator Carson Ellis.

How We Come to Be

Our existence as living beings - thinking, feeling, acting - is an extraordinary thing: this book provides a scientifically based account of the entirety of factors that lead to our existence. The text begins with the physical foundations of our existence, examining the cosmological context of the vast expanding and evolving universe, enabling the existence of the Sun and the Earth. It goes on to summarise the underlying physics and chemistry, explaining behaviour on an atomic and molecular level, and considers the nature of biological emergence, arguing that all complex systems are modular hierarchical structures, allowing function to emerge at every level, and both upward and downward interactions occur between emergent levels. The book then goes on to examine fundamental processes such as metabolism, dealing with material and energy needs, and homeostasis, stabilising the system against perturbing influences. At the molecular level, this is all enabled by change of shape of macromolecules, and the text looks at how we come into being by a combination of natural selection and developmental processes, which interact with each other and with physiology. Finally, the book discusses the brain and mind, emphasizing the interaction of rationality and emotions, and examining the nature of mental causation and free will. It then delves into existence on a societal level, showing how social institutions having causal powers, and arguing that society can be understood as a homeostatic feedback system relating welfare to social, economic, political, and legal interactions. All social outcomes are determined crucially by our values, the nature of which can be represented by a spectrum of values ranging from very destructive and selfish to very constructive and generous. The final chapter discusses whether meaning exists in the universe, providing evidence that the answer is yes, arguing for moral realism and the existence of a series of abstract possibility spaces that form the deep structure of the cosmos.

A tree is not just a type of being, it is also a way of being - one that is wildly creative, fantastically resilient, and most of all, deeply rooted... From bestselling author Robert Moor comes a wondrous journey through the wilds of nature and the gnarls of history, exploring how trees - from the tiniest bonsai to the mightiest sequoia - teach us to grow wise. One day, on a whim, Robert Moor set out to climb a tree near his home, unwittingly embarking on what would become a decade-long, globe-spanning adventure. Drawing on an astonishing range of thinkers, from cutting-edge scientists to ancient philosophers, Moor explores how trees have shaped human lives for millennia - and how they can guide us into the future. His hunt for the 'wisdom of trees' takes him from the Lake District to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Papua and Japan. He dines with David Attenborough, naps with chimpanzees and risks his life to save an ancient forest. Along the way, Moor investigates some of humanity's oldest mysteries: What is the secret to growing old well? How do we set down roots in an increasingly chaotic world? And most importantly, how should we - as individuals, as communities, as stewards of the Earth - live? What begins as an ode to the miracle of trees blossoms into a joyous, daring, fiercely hopeful endeavour to broaden our minds and deepen our connections. To truly grasp the wisdom of a tree, this bold new classic announces, you must learn to think like one.

Benevolence and Bondage

How Jonathan Edwards's theology of equality laid foundations for early American abolitionism In this groundbreaking book, John T. Lowe reexamines Jonathan Edwards's legacy by focusing on the intersections among slavery, race, and theology. Connecting seemingly disparate aspects of Edwards's life and thought, Lowe offers a powerful new interpretation of one of America's most influential theologians. While Edwards was himself an enslaver, his theological writings—especially his concept of "civil-spiritual dualism"—provided impetus for some of his followers to embrace abolitionism. Through close analysis of sermons, letters, and personal writings, Lowe reveals the tensions and transformations within Edwards's thought. The theological, social, and political implications of this revivalist preacher's private and public ideas extended beyond New England and shaped debates across the early American republic. Benevolence and Bondage challenges familiar narratives about Edwardsean thought and the theological roots of the antislavery movement. Lowe clarifies Edwards's theological position and reframes how religious ideas both supported and disrupted slavery. Bridging history and theology, Lowe contributes significantly to the Edwards renaissance and confronts uncomfortable truths at the heart of the American colonial project.

A Billion Years of Sex Differences

In A Billion Years of Sex Differences, evolutionary psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams tackles some of science’s most controversial questions: How do men and women differ? Where do the differences come from? And how do they shape modern lif? he result is the most up-to-date, balanced, and engaging account of human sex differences yet written, covering everything from dating and mating to aggression and parenting, from children’s toy preferences and workplace gender gaps to mental health and the politics of equality. Drawing on a century of research - and a billion years of evolution - Stewart-Williams explains why many sex differences appear despite socialization, not because of it; why in our mating and parenting patterns, humans are more like the average bird than the average mammal; and why sex differences are sometimes a sign of societal health rather than injustice. With more than two decades of research in evolutionary psychology and an international reputation in the field, Steve Stewart-Williams is uniquely positioned to challenge prevailing views in this fraught debate. Avoiding the extremes of either overstating or denying the differences, he argues that, rather than trying to make men and women identical, we should strive for a world where bias and barriers are eliminated, and where people are free to be themselves whether they conform to gender norms or defy them.

Overshadowed

This visual history sheds light on forgotten parts of World War II history through the lens of the US Marine Corps, serving everywhere outside of the Pacific. When we think of US Marine involvement in World War II, we invariably think of the Pacific – and while a majority of the Corps did serve in there, the Marine Corps actually served in all theaters of the war. Marines fought Axis forces in Operation Torch in North Africa, landed on D-Day, parachuted behind enemy lines in France, made commando raids in Italy, attacked German submarines in the Caribbean and continued to guard the East Coast of the United States. Compiled from years of research from the National Archives, databases, and private collections, this new book offers a visual history of the Marine Corps and sheds light onto the overlooked aspects of its service in World War II. Marine Corps veteran Isaac Lamberth uses firsthand archival material, period images, and newspaper articles to chart the Corps' contribution to every theater of the war. Through their own words, Marines showcase how they worked, lived, trained, and fought in Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and the Atlantic. Then, as now, Marines fought in every clime and place.

Separation of Church and Hate

A deeply irreverent and Biblically-correct takedown of the far-right and their co-opting of religion from John Fugelsang, one of today's top political and comedic minds. For more than two centuries, the United States Constitution has given us the right to a society where church and state exist independently. But Christianity has been hijacked by far-right groups and politicians who seek to impose their narrow views on government, often to justify oppressive and unequal policies. The extremists who weaponize the Bible for earthly power aren't actually on the side of Jesus-and historically they never have been. How do we fight back against those acting-literally-in bad fait? omedian and broadcaster John Fugelsang finally offers the answers. In this informative, perspective-shifting book, Fugelsang takes readers through common fundamentalist arguments on abortion, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and more-exposing their hypocrisy and inaccuracy through scripture, common sense, and deeply inappropriate humor. It offers practical tips on how to debate your loved one, coworker, or neighbor on the issues that divide us using that Bible they claim to follow. But Fugelsang's message is about more than just taking down hypocrites. It's about fighting for the love, mercy, and service that are supposed to make up the heart of Christianity. Told with Fugelsang's trademark blend of radical honesty, comedy, and deep political and religious knowledge, Separation of Church and Hate is the book every American needs today. It's a rallying cry for compassion and clarity for anyone of any faith who's sick of religion being used as a cloaking device for hate.

Suing the Kremlin

Vladimir Putin came to power by destroying the Russian oligarchs, the entrepreneurs who grew rich during Russia’s chaotic transition from communism and exercised unseemly influence over the government of Boris Yeltsin. Putin confiscated their companies and used the profits to build the Kremlin’s war chest for the invasion of Ukraine. He and his cronies siphoned off billions for themselves. Drawing on exclusive interviews and explosive new material, in Suing the Kremlin Martin Sixsmith tells the astonishing story of what happened to the men Putin dispossessed. Some were sent to labour camps, forced into exile or murdered. Some attempted to fight back, but with no success. Yet for the past twenty years, a small, determined team of legal experts based in London has been pursuing Putin and his rogue state through courts across the globe. Acting on behalf of Group Menatep – the holding company founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia’s wealthiest oligarch – they have set out to reclaim this vast stolen fortune and to prove that even the most powerful men in the world are not beyond the reach of international law.
