Songs In The Key of MP3

It''s 2013. You''re a teenager squinting at your laptop in the dead of night, flicking between iTunes and YouTube and PirateBay. Endless reams of artists unspool at the click of a button. New forms of musical discovery open up before your very eyes. This evolving digital landscape exists beyond the radio, HMV and even the most extensive record collection. You''ve entered a whole new world and, suddenly, just about everything feels possible. In Songs in the Key of MP3: The New Icons of the Internet Age, Liam Inscoe-Jones explores five contemporary artists who broke the old rules of sound, style and the music industry at large: Devonté Hynes (of Blood Orange), FKA Twigs, Oneohtrix Point Never, Earl Sweatshirt and SOPHIE. Each began their careers as obscure outsiders but, over time, they helped to re-shape pop culture in their image. Through these five extraordinary figures and an eclectic supporting cast of dozens more, Inscoe-Jones paints a picture of the sonic landscape of the last ten years, exploring the influence of their dazzling music on pop culture, the internet and ourselves. An unorthodox mix of criticism, biography and music history - and featuring interviews with the likes of Caroline Polachek, Daniel Lopatin and Nicolás Jaar - Songs in the Key of MP3 is a book of endless curiosity and wonder; a salutary attempt to define pop culture in a fast and ephemeral age.

The Death Ship

Death is a topic we often avoid talking about, but in The Death Ship Victoria Brown faces it head on, taking a deep dive into the fate of Titanic’s victims: how did they die? How did their bodies decompose? Were their bodies recovered and buried? What happened to the bodies that went down with the ship? And what of Titanic’s legacy? Here, Brown explores the proposed legislative changes, salvage proposals and surge of interest the wreck received shortly after the disaster, alongside the contemporary controversy surrounding the wreck as a shipwreck versus a gravesite. The Death Ship is a fascinating, at times shocking, examination of the ill-fated souls who tragically lost their lives that day – a crucial but seldom told part of Titanic’s enduring story. It also gives recognition to the people of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada, whose unwavering dedication ensured those who died were properly taken care of.

All Things Are Too Small

Decluttering has reduced our living spaces to empty non-places; the mindfulness trend has emptied our minds of the thoughts that make us who we are; and the regularization of sex has drained it of unpredictability and therefore true eroticism. In an age of oppressive sterility and limitation, All Things Are Too Small is a refreshing and much-needed tonic: a soul cry for derangement, imbalance, obsession, ravishment and disorder.

The Cult of St Swithun

St Swithun was an obscure ninth-century bishop of Winchester about whom little was, and is, known. But following the translation of his relics from a conspicuous tomb into the Old Minster, Winchester, on 15 July 971, the massive rebuilding of the cathedral, and a vigorous publicity campaign by Bishop Aethelwold (963-84), St Swithun became one of the most popular and important English saints, whose cult was widespread not only in England but also in Ireland, Scandinavia, and France. The present volume includes new and full editions of all the relevant texts – hagiographical, liturgical, and historical – in Latin, Old English, and Middle English, many of which have never been published before: these illuminate the origins and development of St Swithun’s cult. No dossier of an important English saint has been published on this scale until now: the wealth of this volume sheds new light not only on St Swithun himself, but also on the times during which his cult was at the peak of its popularity.

Dark Brilliance

A sweeping history of the Age of Reason, which shows how, although it was a time of progress in many areas, it was also an era of brutality and intolerance, by the author of The Borgias and The Florentines.During the 1600s, between the end of the Renaissance and the start of the Enlightenment, Europe lived through an era known as the Age of Reason. This was a revolutionary period which saw great advances in areas such as art, science, philosophy, political theory and economics. However, all this was accomplished against a background of extreme political turbulence and irrational behaviour on a continental scale in the form of internal conflicts and international wars. Indeed, the Age of Reason itself was born at the same time as the Thirty Years'' War, which would devastate central Europe to an extent that would not be seen again until the twentieth century.By exploring all the key events and bringing to life some of the most influential characters of the era, including Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Newton, Descartes, Spinoza, Louis XIV and Charles I, Paul Strathern tells the story of this paradoxical age, while also counting the human cost of imposing the progress and modernity upon which the Western world was built.

St George: Hero, Martyr and Myth

Who was St George and how did he become patron saint not only of England but also of many other European countries? In this richly illustrated book, Samantha Riches explores the extraordinary wealth of myths and legends, art and inspiration that has grown up around the obscure fourth-century Christian martyr. The visual arts of medieval and renaissance Europe bear eloquent testimony to the range of significant cultural roles of St George. A hero and martyr who was venerated as a symbol of chivalry, he was also an emblem of both chastity and fertility, and was a signifier of the power of the urban elite. Using historical, art historical and literary evidence, Riches creates a vivid and compelling narrative, paying close attention to the symbolism of the saint’s combat with the dragon and its development as the most significant aspect of his legend and cult. The complex medieval psychology revealed by her study of this motif reveals some astonishing results, not least the implications of the discovery of a number of representations of female dragons.

Falling in Love

The great subject of love – finding it, keeping it, losing it – has fascinated and consumed us since the beginning of time. Why do we fall in love, what does it mean and how do we cope in relationships? Through essays and letters, these questions are tackled by an array of classic writers from ancient to modern times. Falling in Love explores romance, infatuation and everything in between. In a letter of advice, poet Rainer Maria Rilke talks about how change is an inevitable part of relationships. Plato traces the idea of an ‘other half’ to humanity’s beginnings. Mae M. Franking relates the ups and downs of a couple from different cultures, whereas Emma Goldman sets out a lively debate separating marriage and love. Though Stendhal highlights how we fall into the trap of overidealising a loved one, Sappho is not afraid to woo her beloved above all else. Combining self-help, erudition, and healing wisdom, here’s a book to help us make sense of the wonderful and complex idea of love. Liberalism

Jonathan Parry presents a history of Liberalism that is organized around themes in British Liberal politics since the early nineteenth century. In the first half of the book, he shows how the Liberal Party shaped national politics between 1830 and 1914 by organizing a series of campaigns against what it saw as over-dominant interest groups in British and Irish political, economic and religious life. Some of these campaigns succeeded, some failed, but they gave the party a strong identity as a political movement hostile to concentrations of power. The last two chapters chart its response to its political marginalization by Labour and Conservatives since the 1920s. They show how Liberals have continued to organize against over-centralized institutional power. They have defended civil liberties, urged devolution, criticized the rigidity of the electoral system, and attacked exaggerations of Britain?s capacity to act independently in the world. British Liberalism?s focus has never been the defence of laissez-faire economic principles, as many claim; it has always been political.

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

A Clear, Biblical Picture of God’s Unconditional Love for His Children Many believers know that “God is love.” But whether through cultural lies, false beliefs, or years of mulling over the tragedies of the world, it may be difficult to see the true, steadfast, and unchanging love of the Father. Thankfully the Bible offers a clear picture of what God’s love looks like and how, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, believers experience his affection for themselves.  Taking an accessible approach to biblical theology, author Sam Storms explores Scripture to address what God’s love is and what it isn’t. Drawing insights from the Psalms and the life of Jesus, Storms covers God’s sovereignty and the saving power, longevity, and sin-killing nature of his love. The Steadfast Love of the Lord breaks down obstacles that prevent believers from accepting biblical truths and challenges the cultural lies that hinder them from accepting God’s vast and unfathomable love. Accessible: An introductory approach to biblical theology, this book is perfect for laypeople and thoughtful Christians  Practical: Not only helps believers study the nature of God but helps them experience his affection for themselves  Honest: From a biblical perspective, this book addresses the cultural lies of our age to explain what love is and what it isn’t
