Tilquhillie Castle

In 1985, Tilquhillie Castle, in the picturesque Royal Deeside region in Aberdeenshire, was a ruinous Z-plan Scottish tower house. Originally built in the middle of the sixteenth century for the important local Douglas family, it had been derelict for nearly forty years, inhabited only by bats. John Coyne and his wife Kay had the vision and dedication to buy this property and restore it to its former glory, working together with talented local craftsmen over many years. The philosophy that guided the restoration was based on authenticity, informed by the building itself. During the process, a picture emerged of a building that was the product of an unknown but highly gifted master mason, probably a Frenchman. Details of his genius were evident everywhere in the building. He had designed and built a simple and elegant fortified dwelling for the Douglas laird, which stood in defiance of any potential foe and provided evidence of the social, political and historical norms of a bygone era. Although of modest proportions as castles go, Tilquhillie Castle is revealed as an architectural masterpiece of the period.

What Grows in Weary Lands

From the award-winning author and former New York Times opinion writer and columnist comes a fresh vision for navigating burnout and weariness through ancient Christian practices'Honest, wise and persistent in imagination, this is a book to refresh the seasoned spiritual traveler. A beautifully crafted weave of both resilience and wonder' Martin Shaw, author of Liturgies of the WildHow do we cultivate faith that endure? arly Christians often grappled with a reality we rarely talk about in contemporary life: that God seems to abandon the soul at times, leaving us feeling as if we are alone and left to our own resources. For centuries, times of 'aridity' were seen as necessary – prerequisites for growth and maturity. Yet in our culture fixated on speed and optimisation, we risk losing this deeper sense of the human journey and the resilience that comes with it. Drawing from her own season of exhaustion and also from the rich well of Christian tradition – particularly the earliest Christian monks – Warren explores the habits and mindsets that anchor us through doubt, difficulty and spiritual dryness. She helps us see that nothing is wasted – that, even in desert seasons, something good is growing, rooted in grace and reaching toward glory. What Grows in Weary Lands speaks to anyone longing for a life of depth in a distracted age and guides us toward lives of resilience, renewal and flourishing. Ebury Vine: The Home Of Christian Living. Drawing on the deep roots of Christianity to cultivate curious minds and inspire faith-informed growth.

THE STUNNING NEW BOOK FROM THE HOST OF BBC 2'S VILLAGES BY THE SEAIn Britain we are surrounded by our coast. It shapes us physically, but it's more than just a place where the land meets the sea. Far from being at the margins of national interests, the coast, and its history, has always been at the core of the British people's most important endeavours and central to era-defining national events. From artefacts lost by hunter-gatherers in a land beneath the sea to the remains of bustling medieval ports, remnants of ancient fortifications to the lingering scars of great industry, our coastline is indelibly imprinted with the traces of times gone by. Archaeologist and presenter Ben Robinson takes the reader on a journey through Britain's coastal heritage and stories of our past, rediscovering the momentous ways our coastline has impacted our history and continues to influence our nation today. At once a compelling historical exploration and charming celebration, Coastline is a story of place, people, history and identity, all forged beside the crumbling rock, windswept beaches and pounding waves of the sea.

Mother of the World

Reclaiming Turkmenistan from the margins of global attention, Hein offers a lively history of the ‘Mother of the World’ and its people. These days, it’s rare for news items to come out of Turkmenistan. It can be easy for us to assume that the country was always isolated, quirky or even irrelevant. But its real history paints a wildly different picture. Turkmenistan’s desert-dominated landscape has been an unheralded flashpoint at many key moments in history, whether as an integral but misunderstood part of the Soviet Empire, or as a major strategic prize in the brutal invasions of Genghis Khan. Sat exactly where East met West, yet often aloof from both, Turkmenistan was a key crossroads on the Silk Road, and once hosted the largest city on Earth, which doubled up as one of the world’s great seats of learning. It lays claim to conjuring up the world’s first monotheistic religion, and it may well have been one of the major players in that elusive turning point of history, the birth of civilisation—up there with Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indus Valley. No other nation can claim all of this, yet Turkmenistan’s past has long remained hidden from our understanding. This is the extraordinary story of a starkly beautiful land, its unique culture, and the wonderful people who now call it home.

Ripening

‘Fairy tales matter because at the heart of every one of them is transformation.’In a world in which all the old certainties seem to be crumbling, it's hard not to feel we have lost our way. In Ripening, Sharon Blackie insists that fairy tales are precisely the stories we need for such times. Long before they became bywords for people-pleasing princesses, these old stories – passed down to us through generations by our peasant ancestors – told us everything that women need to learn about the world. They might be set in difficult and dangerous times, but they require their heroines to face the unfaceable and dig deep for previously unimagined inner resources. They teach us to be savvy, inspire us to grow in confidence, show us how to be bold and claim the future we dream of. More than anything, fairy tales are soul-food. They show us how to take hold of our own personal narratives and transform them into stories that might begin with trauma, but end with empowerment.  They offer us images of startling resonance and beauty, while showing us how to recognise and make use of the possibilities that rise to the surface when broken systems are cracked open.

Poverty Abolitionists

The United States and the world have made dramatic progress against poverty in recent decades, but the second Trump administration has thrown progress into reverse. David Beckmann calls us to push back against MAGA and restore progress against poverty. David is an economist, pastor, and activist. He was awarded the World Food Prize for leadership that led to substantial reductions in hunger. Drawing on stories from his own life and the struggles of poor communities around the world, Beckmann distills five essential insights and ten strategies to get progress against poverty going again. These include legislative advocacy, volunteering and financial contributions to election campaigns, action in defense of democracy, and needed reforms in American spirituality and religion. He invites people of faith, seekers, and skeptics alike to deepen their solidarity with those in need and with a threatened planet. He highlights data that prove poverty is solvable, confronts the problems that our country and the world now face, and calls for a new poverty abolition movement-similar in scale and determination to the movement that ended slavery. At the heart of this book is hope: hope grounded in evidence, history, and the countless efforts of communities and advocates who continue to push for justice. With a foreword by travel writer Rick Steves, Poverty Abolitionists offers both a practical roadmap and a stirring moral challenge. It is a clarion call to action for activists, policy makers, and ordinary citizens who care about the future of humanity and seek to build a fairer, freer, and more just world.

The Gods of New York

New York City entered 1986 as a city reborn, with record profits on Wall Street sending waves of money splashing across Manhattan and bringing a once-bankrupt and reeling city back to life. But it also entered 1986 as a city divided. Nearly one-third of the city's Black and Hispanic residents were living below the poverty line. Thousands of New Yorkers were sleeping in the streets - and in many cases addicted to drugs, dying of AIDS, or suffering from mental illness. The manufacturing jobs that had once sustained a thriving middle class had vanished. Long-simmering racial tensions were boiling over. Over the next four years, a singular confluence of events - involving a cast of outsized, unforgettable characters - would widen those divisions into chasms. Ed Koch. Donald Trump. Al Sharpton. The Central Park Five. Larry Kramer. Spike Lee. Rudy Giuliani. Howard Beach. Tawana Brawley. The Preppy Murder. The Tompkins Square Riots. Jimmy Breslin. Ivan Boesky. Do the Right Thing, Wall Street, crack, the AIDS epidemic, Black Monday and, of course, ready to pour gasoline on every fire - the tabloids. In The Gods of New York, bestselling author Jonathan Mahler tells the story of these outsized characters and of these convulsive, defining years. It's an exuberant, kaleidoscopic, and deeply immersive portrait of a city in transformation, one whose long-held identity was suddenly up for grabs: Could it be both the great working-class city, drawing in and lifting up immigrants from around the world and the money-soaked capital of global finance? Could it retain a civic culture - a common idea of what it meant to be a New Yorker - when the rich were building a city of their own and vast swaths of its citizens were losing faith in the systems that were intended to protect them? New York was one thing at the dawn of 1986; it would be something very different as 1989 came to a close. This book is the story of how that happened.

A Trick Of The Mind

How does your brain decide what it's seeing, from the physical world to other people? For decades, scientists have tried to understand how our brains work, not realising that the answer lies much closer to home than it seems. The latest research in neuroscience and psychology suggests that the brain is doing the same thing that the scientists are: using past experiences to build theories of how the world works, and using these models to predict and make sense of it. Through this process, your brain constructs the reality that you live in. In this book Daniel Yon takes the research one step further, uncovering how your brain colours your perception of the world, the judgements you make about other people and the beliefs you form about yourself. With transformative applications for how we engage with other communities and approach mental illness, A Trick of The Mind will revolutionise the way you think.

The Art of Biodiversity

Strikingly original and abundantly illustrated, The Art of Biodiversity surveys the golden age of natural history art, exploring the alliance between scientists and artists that first revealed the astonishing diversity of life on Earth. Between 1700 and 1900, an art movement unveiled nature’s great secret: the global diversity of life-forms. Centuries before the word “biodiversity” existed, naturalists began to glimpse the reality that lay behind Charles Darwin’s lyrical evocation of nature’s “endless forms most beautiful.” The naturalists recruited artists to create a family album of Earth, with every picture a precise drawing of a species of plant or animal, and so science and art, for the first and last time, went exploring together. The Art of Biodiversity recounts key chapters in the history of scientific nature art, with more than 330 color illustrations of surpassing beauty. It’s a story about art that’s not in the art history books, and a story about science that’s missing from histories of science. Here, such giants as Linnaeus, Buffon, Cuvier, Humboldt, and Darwin cross paths with superb artists, including Merian, Redouté, Audubon, and Haeckel, among many others. This art first appeared in vividly illustrated books that, in a world without photography or film, offered readers a vastly expanded vision of nature. The Art of Biodiversity introduces the reader to the extraordinary men and women who created these books. They focused exquisite artistic skills on nature, traded in exotic seashells and butterflies, collected bird and monkey specimens in tropical rainforests, dredged strange invertebrates from the depths of the ocean, peered through magnifying lenses at insects, and dug prehistoric bones out of the earth. After sinking out of sight in the twentieth century, biodiversity art resurfaced in the twenty-first in myriad forms that reach millions of people on the Internet, as the natural history books in the world’s great libraries were digitized and made available to all. The Art of Biodiversity plots a course through this wealth of material to chronicle the only art movement that successfully aligned the goals of art and science, for the transcendent purpose of documenting and understanding the natural world.

The Muse of History

How the modern world has understood the ancient Greeks and why they matter todayThe study of ancient Greek history has been central to the western conception of history since the Renaissance. The Muse of History traces the shifting patterns of this preoccupation in the last three centuries, in which each generation has reinterpreted the Greeks in the light of their contemporary world, through times of revolution, conflicting ideologies and warfare. It aims to offer a new history of Greek historiography from the Enlightenment to the present, and to acknowledge the continuing spiritual importance of the ancient Greeks for European culture in the twentieth century under totalitarian persecutions. Through the study of different historians, many of them unjustly forgotten, it shows the problematic nature of the Anglo-Saxon tradition and the importance of ideas from the continent of Europe, the ambiguities of democracy, and the impossibility of understanding the past or the present outside our common European heritage. It ends by offering suggestions for the future of the study of the Greeks in the context of world history.

Strangers and Intimates

From ancient times to our digital present, Strangers and Intimates traces the dramatic emergence of private life, and argues that it is now in mortal danger. In this sweeping history, acclaimed cultural historian Tiffany Jenkins takes readers on an epic journey, from the strict separations of public and private in ancient Athens to the moral rigidity of the Victorian home, and from the feminists of the 1970s - who declared that 'the personal is political' - to the boundary-blurring demands of our digital age. Strangers and Intimates is both a celebration of the private realm and a warning: as social media, surveillance and the expectations of constant openness reshape our lives, Jenkins asks a timely question: can private life survive the demands of the twenty-first century?
