A ,,Miért alszunk?" az első alvással foglalkozó könyv, melyet a téma egyik tudományos szakértője - a berkeley-i Kaliforniai Egyetem alváskutatással és agyi képalkotással foglalkozó laboratóriumának vezetője - írt, s mely úttörő módon tárja fel az alvás titkait, elmagyarázva, hogyan javíthatunk általa életminőségünkön.

Cévní vstupy
Cévními vstupy rozumíme zavedení katétrů nebo kanyl do žilního nebo tepenného řečiště, které umožňuje řadu důležitých diagnostických vyšetření a je nezbytné pro aplikaci léků a výživy u závažných onemocnění. Na druhou stranu zavedení cévního vstupu může být komplikováno v případě, kdy není vstup správně indikován, zaveden a využíván.
V oblasti cévních vstupů dochází k významným změnám. Setkáváme se s novými typy cévních vstupů, využívají se nové metodiky, které rizika komplikací významně snižují, v posledních dvou desetiletích bylo postupně získáno mnoho nových informací na podkladě řady studií.
Žilní vstupy se tradičně dělí jednak na periferní a centrální a jednak na krátkodobé, střednědobé a dlouhodobé. Jak v oblasti periferních, tak v oblasti centrálních vstupů se posledním desetiletí objevila řada nových poznatků, které zásadně mění naše možnosti v jejich optimálním využívání. Dělení na krátkodobé, střednědobé a dlouhodobé žilní vstupy je v současnosti do určité míry překonané. Vedle žilních vstupů je v intenzivní péči často nezbytný i vstup do tepenného řečiště. I v této oblasti je třeba přijmout nové algoritmy, které budou v knize uvedeny.
V knize je vedle definování jednotlivých cévních vstupů věnována pozornost jejich současné indikaci. Součástí publikace je i podrobné seznámení se současným způsobem zavedení jednotlivých žilních vstupů včetně mezinárodně platných doporučení. Nechybí poslední poznatky v oblasti ošetřování a využívání žilní vstupů a problematika cévních vstupů u dětí.
Potřeba zavádění cévních vstupů se zvětšuje s tím, jak stárne naše populace. Počet lékařů je omezen a narůstá potřeba další specializace ve všech medicínských oborech. I v naší zemi to vede k nutnosti předání určitých kompetencí v oblasti cévního vstupu nelékařským pracovníkům.
