The Sound of Welsh Patagonia
An ethnographic study of the Welsh-Patagonians that live in the settlement of Y Wladfa. In 1865, a group of 153 Welsh settlers emigrated to Argentina, following an offer from the Argentine government of one hundred square miles on which to live, with the hope of creating a little Wales away from Wales, free from the influence of the English. The Sound of Welsh Patagonia explores the historical and present-day implications of this emigration through an ethnographic account of how and why Welshness is created, sustained, and performed in the Chubut Province of Patagonia, Southern Argentina. The monograph is based on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in the village of Gaiman and surrounding areas with a community of Welsh Patagonians who live in the Chubut Province. Drawing on data gathered from in-depth participant observation and interviews, it argues that the individual and collective subjectivity (of both the Welsh self and the broader community as Welsh) was performatively constituted in the settler colony through the dynamics of seeing and being seen, and through the dynamics of hearing and being heard. In making this argument, The Sound of Welsh Patagonia analyses a series of ethnographic encounters to consider the usefulness and limitations of concepts that have been developed to theorize the self, such as subjectivity, subjectivization, performance, performativity, and self-cultivation.
Telling The Truth Is Dangerous

Lost Nottingham
The city of Nottingham has been an important centre of trade and industry in the East Midlands since the Middle Ages. Famous particularly for lace-making, centred on the preserved Lace Market area, it was also home to the household names of Boots the chemists and Raleigh bicycles. Since the Norman period the layout of Nottingham and its streets remained virtually the same until the mid-twentieth century. In the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, Nottingham began to see many historic quarters of the city disappear. Large areas were demolished; centuries-old streets disappeared, particularly around the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre where numerous ancient caves under buildings were also destroyed; and famous old buildings such as the Black Boy hotel, Holy Trinity Church and Victoria train station fell victim to the bulldozers. Nové vymezení středověké filosofie - Latinský věk (354-1664) jako éra znaků
John Deely (1942–2017) nám líčí dějiny latinského myšlení, a to z hlediska vývoje sémiotiky, která je podle něj jedním ze základních přínosů latinské civilizace. Deely rozplétá její zápasy od doby Augustinovy přes scholastiku až do první poloviny 17. století, kdy latinský věk předává štafetu novověkému myšlení. Latinská křesťanská filosofie se zabývala především dějinami spásy, usilovala o charakterizaci Boha, světa a člověka v něm, přičemž šlo vždycky o poctivé úsilí vysoce vzdělaných lidí. Deely nabízí příběh, který do latinských staletí vnáší novou perspektivu, než na jakou jsme v novověku zvyklí. Teologické spory odsouvá stranou a současně nabízí možnost pochopit, o co šlo. Dokáže se držet tématu výkladu světa a pokud možno nezabředávat do zákrut středověké teologie či do politických dějin.
Augustin z Hipponu jako hlavní otec-zakladatel latinské tradice zavedl do latinského myšlení pojem znaku (signum). Přitom se domníval, že jenom překládá řecký pojem sémeion. Avšak zatímco sémeion se vztahuje pouze k projevům přírodním, signum se vztahuje také k jazyku a lidskému nitru, jež rozhodujícím způsobem přispívají k rozumění. Naše představy, zkušenosti, paměťové stopy atd., věci existující ve světě i ty v naší mysli mohou vystupovat též jako znaky, tj. označovat něco jiného. Tato základní figura je po celá staletí upřesňována a doplňována, aby nauka vyvrcholila v pozdní scholastice Janem od sv. Tomáše alias Johnem Poinsotem (1589–1644). Nauka možná vyvrcholila, ale svět už neovlivnila: ubíral se jinam, inspirován Poinsotovými současníky, jako byli Galileo a Descartes. Teprve Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914) se začne obírat středověkou scholastikou (tu pozdní patrně neznal), navazuje na latinské myšlení a buduje novou nauku, sémiotiku, jež je v Deelyho podání paralelou k novověké filosofii, jak se odvíjela u Kanta, a mostem k postnovověkému myšlení.
Teolog Vladimír Boublík ve svých dopisech Monice
Dochované dopisy římskokatolického kněze, teologa a exulanta Vladimíra Boublíka Monice Schreier z let 1963 až 1968 a z posledních týdnů jeho života v srpnu a září 1974 přinášejí zajímavé svědectví o životě patrně nejvýznamnějšího českého teologa, žijícího od roku 1952 v římském exilu. Sbírka intimně laděných dopisů přibližuje všednodenní život dvou lidí, které svedla dohromady Moničina pouť ke hrobu svatého Petra. Korespondence zároveň otevírá čtenáři možnost nahlédnout do Boublíkova ryzího teologického díla, jehož část byla přeložena do češtiny.
Posledný Čechoslovák
Ivan Dérer patril k popredným slovenským čechoslovakistom a do konca svojho života sa hlásil k politickému dedičstvu Tomáša G. Masaryka. Do spoločenského a politického života sa zapojil už pred prvou svetovou vojnou. Stal sa signatárom Martinskej deklarácie a v medzivojnovom období zastával v československej vláde viaceré ministerské posty. Po rozpade druhej Česko-Slovenskej republiky žil v Prahe. V auguste 1944 bol zatknutý a väznený na Pankráci a v Terezíne. Po druhej svetovej vojne pôsobil do nástupu komunistického mocenského monopolu vo funkcii predsedu Najvyššieho súdu. V rokoch 1954 – 1955 bol väznený komunistickým režimom. Publikácia analyzuje nielen Dérerovu životnú a politickú dráhu, ale venuje pozornosť i jeho názorom a dobovým svedectvám poskytujúcim inšpiráciu k tomu, aby sme si spolu s ním pripomenuli niektoré politické osobnosti a dôležité udalosti našich dejín.

Celebrating St Andrews
The town of St Andrews in Fife has much to celebrate. Its cathedral was the largest church built in Scotland and the bishops, and later archbishops, played an important role in ruling medieval Scotland. Scotland’s first university was established in St Andrews, which began teaching religious studies in 1410. The university has been the choice for many famous people and is also responsible for many of the town’s traditions. The town was a favourite of Mary, Queen of Scots, who owned a home in St Andrews. In 1663, astrologer and mathematician James Gregory published a design for the first reflecting telescope in St Andrews, and in 1673 Gregory laid the first Meridian line, which earned St Andrews the title ‘the place where time began’. St Andrews is best known, however, as the home of golf. The game had been played and developed in the town for centuries before the formation of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1754, which is considered the headquarters of golf. The town is also famous for its long, sandy beaches, which attracted filmmakers who shot the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire on the West Sands. The Lammas market, the oldest surviving medieval market, is still held in the centre of town, and the annual St Andrew’s Day celebrations, the patron saint of Scotland from whom the town takes its name, are a major attraction. Yet not all of the big names from St Andrews are human: Hamish McHamish, a large ginger cat, became one of the best-known residents and is remembered by a statue in the town centre.Celebrating St Andrews chronicles the proud heritage of the town, its important moments and what draws so many to this fascinating place today. Glasgow Harbour
Glasgow Harbour, the port and shipbuilding centre along the River Clyde from Glasgow Green to the River Kelvin and beyond to Clydebank, became the greatest seaport in Scotland and one of the largest in Britain. Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy
The mental health field was built on the concept of a professional expert with training treating an individual with a diagnosis. Clients who push back against this model are labelled “noncompliant” or “resistant”. This model has harmed countless clients, particularly those with multiple marginalised identities. Over the years, there has been a shift in the field of psychology and mental health. Providers are learning to listen to the needs of their clients—informed by clients’ lived experience—rather than clinging to the idea that only an “expert” can know what an individual needs. Likewise, many in the field are learning to recognise the ways in which neurodivergence can be part of one’s identity, and that while many have support needs, they are not “broken” or needing to be “fixed” or “cured” of their neurodivergence.
