Publikace je zároveň kritickým katalogem stejnojmenné výstavy zahájené na podzim 2025 v prostorách bíloveckého zámku. AFF's understanding of schools is that they are spaces of identification as much as they are places of learning. They aim to create buildings which open up spaces for experiences that foster identity through the interplay of shape and use.
New Schools on the Block is a typological inventory. It features 40 of AFF's school designs, built and unrealised, for towns and cities in Germany and Switzerland through floor plans and photographs of their surroundings, entrance halls, stairwells, classrooms, recreational and storage spaces. While floor plans invite the imagination of spaces, images of realised buildings demonstrate that even details such as a handrail or a sanitary room can be instructive. Užhorod, podobne ako iné mestá moderného Zakarpatska, má v 20. storočí so Slovenskom množstvo kultúrnych a historických väzieb. Pred prvou svetovou vojnou mali naše územia spoločnú skúsenosť, tvorili totiž súčasť uhorskej časti Rakúsko-uhorskej monarchie. V októbri 1919 sa Podkarpatská Rus (vtedajší názov Zakarpatska) stala súčasťou Československej republiky, ktorá vznikla na troskách monarchie z historicky českých a slovenských území. Od roku 1920 sa v Užhorode odohrávajú urbanistické a architektonické procesy nebývalého rozsahu. Súbežne prebiehalo plánovanie a výstavba celých štvrtí, budovanie ciest, regulácia brehov rieky Uh a zakladanie nových inštitúcií. Po pripojení k Ukrajinskej SSR pribudli na mapu mesta ďalšie významné objekty, predovšetkým vzdelávacie, kultúrne a turistické. Historické peripetie, ktorými si Užhorod v 20. storočí prešiel, sa naplno odrážajú aj v jeho architektúre. V tomto sprievodcovi sú zastúpené objekty, ktoré tu zanechali tri z piatich štátov, ktorých bol Užhorod v minulom storočí súčasťou. It includes several previously unpublished buildings and places the powerhouse couple’s architectural work alongside their widely known designs in furniture, exhibitions, and film, showing how they carried consistent design principles across different disciplines.
Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames’s residential architecture is defined by their human-centered approach to modernism. Their work demonstrates a deep commitment to structural clarity, user-centered functionality, and the intelligent use of prefabrication. Rather than focusing purely on aesthetics, the Eameses approached architecture as a form of problem-solving, aiming to create flexible systems that offered a background for life and work in all its expressions.
This book presents all eight houses they designed between 1945 and 1955, featuring sketches, drawings, letters, and photographs – many of which have never been published before – alongside newly produced diagrams and models that offer further insight into their design process.
The book is organized into six chapters, one of which is entirely dedicated to Case Study House No. 8 with newly commissioned photography, together with a wealth of materials from the archives of the Eames Office – many of which are published here for the first time. The book further contextualizes the couple's thinking about domestic living in related fields such as furniture, toy, textile, and graphic design, anchoring the house projects within their work at large.
The book accompanies an exhibition in Milan in April 2026 that is planned to travel internationally.

Faro Modernism
