Sebastiao Salgado. Genesis. 45th Ed.

A photographic homage to our planet “In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” —Sebastiao Salgado On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastiao Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely. Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society—the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future. Over 30 trips—traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions—Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. What does one discover in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo’é tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the making of this work, Salgado calls GENESIS “my love letter to the planet.”

William Eggleston: The Last Dyes

This momentous publication catalogues the last major group of William Eggleston’s photographs to ever be produced using the dye-transfer method, the format in which he originally presented his work. Eggleston’s vivid photographs transform the ordinary into distinctive, poetic images that eschew fixed meaning. One of the foremost practitioners in the medium’s history, Eggleston is widely considered the father of color photography. He pioneered the use of dye-transfer printing for art photography in the 1970s. The technically advanced process?first developed by Kodak in the 1940s?allowed him to achieve the richness of tonal depth and color saturation that he had been searching for. In the early 1990s, Kodak stopped producing the dyes, paper, and film used in the process. With the necessary materials now discontinued, and the bulk of what remained being used for the major group of work presented at David Zwirner in Los Angeles, The Last Dyes marks the final presentation of new works completed in this medium. The publication includes a new essay by Jeffrey Kastner, offering critical insights into Eggleston’s enduring influence at this turning point in the history of photography

Patti Smith: Horses, Paris 1976 is a gorgeous collection of never-before-published photographs of music legend Patti Smith, taken by rock-n-roll photographer Claude Gassian during the release of her iconic album Horses. In this celebration of style, from the moment she entered the public eye during her husband's U.S. Senate campaign through her time as the first Black First Lady of the United States and today as one of the country's most influential figures, Michelle Obama shares how she uses the beauty and intrigue of fashion to draw attention to her message. In The Look, Michelle Obama explores the joy and the purpose of fashion and beauty and how - when wielded with grace and care - they can uplift and affirm the values one holds most dear. Zofia Kulik: Works

The first large-scale English language retrospective of one of Poland's leading contemporary artists, arriving at a transformative moment in her career. Zofia Kulik's photographs are a psychic collage of the self. Inspired by eroticism, feminism, and the political and social developments of post-war Poland, her expansive work offers a radical critique of not only what it means to be an artist and a woman, but of what it means to be human. Featuring her most pivotal series - including The Splendor of Myself - this expansive publication charts her rich and varied career, journeying from her earlier collaborations as KwieKulik to the development of her solo work. Shortly after graduating from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1971, Kulik formed the artistic duo KwieKulik with her then partner Przemyslaw Kwiek. Running the Studio of Documentation and Propagation Activities (PDDiU) from their home in Warsaw, the pair created avant-garde films, photographs and objects, as well as performances, installations and interventionist texts. After splitting in 1987, Kulik expressed a new-found desire for her work to be present in museums and institutions. Subsequently developing the black-and-white photomontages for which she is now most famous, Kulik would combine complex patterns with often hundreds of images. Painstakingly detailed and often physically imposing, these images reflect an artist committed to exploring the murky terrains of the psyche. Bringing together these pivotal works alongside Kulik's lesser-known but no less radical projects, this book features comprehensive yet accessible texts from leading writers to provide a much needed introduction to one of Poland's most important living artists.

The Camera at War

It is said that the first casualty of war is truth. But in the arena of war photography, the truth is never simple. Drawing on an incredible range of imagery from the Imperial War Museum's vast collection and other major archives around the globe, expert curator Hilary Roberts presents a new perspective on the role of image manipulation in this field over the past 170 years, exploring the consequences for our understanding of historic and contemporary conflicts. From the staged scenes and hand-coloured Daguerreotypes of the Crimean War at the very beginning of conflict photography to the AI-generated protest and propaganda imagery of today, Roberts explores the myriad ways in which layers of meaning can be added, erased or changed completely. As The Camera at War so powerfully reveals, sometimes this has been done in order to present a closer approximation of the truth, and sometimes for the causes of national morale, subterfuge and control of the winning narrative.

Helen Levitt

Published to accompany a major touring exhibition, this is the most comprehensive survey to date of the groundbreaking American photographer Helen Levitt. Over six decades, Helen Levitt (1913–2009) explored the streets of her native New York with a handheld camera. Influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, she found inspiration in the theatre and spontaneity of the street, capturing everyday moments in urban life and forging a distinct visual language from her private observations. Exuding a keen warmth and sensitivity for human gesture and movement, her photographs capture, in James Agee’s words, the ‘pure spontaneity of true folk art’. Accompanying a major touring exhibition of Levitt’s work, the first of its kind to draw from her complete archive, this ambitious publication showcases her entire output. It not only includes her best-known photographs, but also features rarely seen early works from her first year using a Leica and all fifty works from the original edit of her classic 1965 photobook A Way of Seeing, with record prints preserved by Levitt herself. Essays by a range of scholars and specialists hone in on key thematic, technical and biographical aspects of Levitt’s life and work, including an examination of the photos she took during her trip to Mexico in 1941, her innovative use of colour in the 1950s and her late work from the 1980s, providing an authoritative insight into one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

Jaké byly její přednosti oproti daguerrotypii a ostatním konkurenčním metodám a v čem naopak zaostávala?

Nakolik musíme vědět, co vidíme, abychom to skutečně viděli? Nakolik si musíme viděné domýšlet a nakolik si můžeme být jisti tím, co vidíme, a tím, co víme? Obrazová část knihy Tunelové vidění sestává z fotografií, fotogramů a daguerrotypií Ondřeje Přibyla a je rozdělená do tří kapitol (Mechanický divák, Tunelové vidění a Modely a konstanty) doplněných citacemi a autorovými komentáři. ENGLISH VERSION: The central theme of the publication is seeing and perceiving the world and the limits that restrict our perception. How much do we need to know what we see in order to truly see it? How much do we need to imagine what we see, and how certain can we be of what we see and what we know? The visual part of the book Tunnel Vision consists of photographs, photograms, and daguerreotypes by Ondřej Přibyl and is divided into three chapters (Mechanical Viewer, Tunnel Vision, and Models and Constants), supplemented by quotations and the author's comments. The authors of the text section are Petr Vaňous and Pavel Dvořák, who also contributed to the concept of the entire publication. The book includes an interview with Ondřej Přibyl by Karel Haloun, and instead of an afterword, there is a text by Kamil Nábělek. The title of the publication refers not only to the diagnosis, when the affected person loses peripheral vision for various reasons and is only able to focus on partial phenomena, but above all it is a metaphor through which the author attempts to name the fact that our perception is always limited to a mere slice of space and time, to the fact that it is not possible to see the world as a whole and all at once. And it is precisely photography, with its automatic birth, inevitable causality, and temporality, that Přibyl considers an extremely suitable tool for illustrating these reflections.
