Edward S. Curtis. The North American Indian. The Complete Portfolios

Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) dedicated his entire life to a project all his own, to use a camera to preserve the cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of North America. For three decades, he traveled in every region of the continent, through every kind of terrain and weather, via land or water, in the 50°C heat of the Mojave Desert or the -20°C chill of the Arctic; moving on foot, by horse, wagon, donkey, boat or train, or later by automobile. More than 40,000 photos were produced during those years. During his lifetime, the finest of these photographs entitled The North American Indian, were presented in twenty elaborate, large-scale portfolios with which Curtis raised a monument to commemorate the disappearing culture of North America's indigenous peoples and to bring it fully back to life. In addition, the book holds a selection of photographs from the text volumes. Without Edward S. Curtis we would hardly know a thing about the rites of the Hopi in America's southwest, nor be able to picture the Qagyuhl winter dancers, or have any idea of the ceremonies on Nunivak Island. The basic humanistic message that shines from his pictures is highly relevant, namely peaceful coexistence in which you can overcome hatred and prejudice if you are always willing, on meeting a stranger, to seek some idea in common.

Walter Benjamin: A Little History of Photography

An extraordinary document in the history of photographic criticism. Perhaps more than any other text, A Little History of Photography by the German-Jewish thinker Walter Benjamin has shaped the way in which we understand early photography and the photographic act. One of the first theoretical studies of visual culture, this essay laid the foundation for modern cultural criticism. Instead of regarding the artwork as a unique object, Benjamin emphasized the political and artistic potential of a new technology based on endless reproduction. A Little History of Photography was originally published in the German literary journal Die Literarische Welt in 1931 as three short essays reviewing several books dedicated to early photography. In this text, Benjamin introduced concepts that remain central to critical theory of the medium: the aura, optical unconscious, reproducibility, among other topics. It constitutes a remarkably prescient description of the limits and potentials of photography which remains thought-provoking today.

Dennis Morris - Life + Music

A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts. Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. With contributions from agnes B and Sean O’Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris’s influential work in depth for the first time.

He is influenced by the films of Federico Fellini and David Lynch and the photography of Richard Avedon, as well as the album covers and book designs created by his father, Alan Aldridge. As one of Aldridge’s own inspirations, David Lynch, once said of his work: “Miles sees a color-coordinated, graphically pure, hard-edged reality.” This latest issue of Toiletpaper sequences a selection of Aldridge’s glamorous and elaborate mise-en-scene images in a palette of vibrant acidic hues.

For an Ecology of Images

When Susan Sontag first proposed the idea of an "ecology of images," she meant it as an exhortation to be vigilant against the vast surplus of pictures threatening our ability to truly see. Today, beyond the deep anxieties over a diminishing attention economy, concern focuses on the environmental cost of storing and circulating the digital images that confront us with unprecedented speed. Against the disposable rapidity demanded by digital media, Peter Szendy emphasizes the labor and time required for images to develop and come into view. This inquisitive essay takes us from mimicry in the animal kingdom to the history of the shadow, Pliny's story about the birth of painting to Nabokov's butterflies, the first use of slo-mo in film to the first aerial photograph.

Scotland

The name of Scotland seems to originate from the latin word Scoti, which was the word used by the Romans to describe some of the Gaelic peoples found in the British Isles around 1600 years ago. The country extends northwards from the rolling hills of its Borders region in the south, where it meets England, through the more heavily populated urban areas found in the Central Lowlands strip, then out into the lonely towering peaks and sweeping glens of the Highlands. Beyond these, moving offshore, are the wild and windswept archipelagos of the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetlands. It is a land of history, myths and legends, telling of fierce clan rivalries and struggles against oppression. Some of these historical figures have tales which still resonate across the globe, including William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce, with their stories often being bound together with those of the many spectacular castles to be found throughout the land. The country is also reflected in the works of its great poets and writers, such as Robert Burns and R.L. Stevenson. With 16,500 km (10,250 mi) of coastline, Scotland has always been closely associated with the sea and all its dangers, as may be seen from many dozens of lighthouses which dot its shores. Scotland, however was also at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, a land whose scientific, philosophical and technological innovation changed the world. There is, indeed, so much more to Scotland than just tartan and kilts.

Japan

Geishas and samurais, karate and bonsai -no country in Asia has had a comparable influence on Western culture and global developments as Japan. It is a country full of beauty, exoticism - and contrasts. Dazzling mega-metropolises like Tokyo, Osaka or Yokohama on the one hand, rugged volcanoes, glittering mountain lakes and remote temples on the other. There is no question that Japan exerts a strong fascination on most people. This is also due to the people, for example those bustling suit and costume wearers who squeeze through the subways of the cities early in the morning and in the evening by the millions and who are willing to give up a large part of their annual vacation for the good of the company. Or even the ordinary employees, such as those gardeners in the many public gardens and parks who spend hours crouching with stoic calm, using small scissors to cut a tree into the right shape, leaf by leaf, branch by branch. For the Japanese love perfection, their goal is to bring structure to chaos. This brings disadvantages. A latent austerity pervades society, for whom harmony and politeness are paramount and where every word is weighed in the balance so as not to snub the other person. But anyone who flouts the many unwritten rules will quickly feel the authority of society. "You hit a nail that sticks out," says a well-known Japanese proverb. Harmony here also stands for conformity, and any deviation from the norm runs the risk of disrupting it. Foreigners are allowed, even expected, to make various missteps. Because - this is also a consensus in society - only a Japanese person can really understand the Japanese.

Mountains

For sober thinking geologists, the formation of mountains (orogenesis) goes back to plate tectonics. The shifting of the continental plates causes mountains to form, erosion removes them again. Even the longest mountain range on earth was formed in this way: from Alaska to the Andes, the American Cordilleras form the eastern part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 452 volcanoes rise. And indeed, fire-spitting giants and bitterly cold worlds of ice are the main reasons for the fascination composed of fear and reverence that mountains exerted on early mankind. Mountain peaks were home to the oldest weather gods. In fact, mountains are meteorological divides and watersheds and determine the climate, and their diverse and unique vegetation zones are life-givers. Only hesitantly did people approach colossal holy mountains like the Annapurna in the Himalayas, the “Goddess of food and nourishment”. But curiosity won out, ice mummies in the Alps, Andes and Altai prove it: hunters, shepherds and priests were drawn early to these heavenly places. The highest archaeological site on earth is on Llullaillaco (6,739 m/22,109 ft): on the border between Argentina and Chile, the Incas were already building temples before 1500 AD. The disenchantment of the peaks of the gods began around 1850 with the beginning of modern mountain sports. Today, almost all peaks from Aconcagua to the Zugspitze have been climbed, on the Eiger as well as on Everest the most difficult passages have been mastered thanks to experienced climbing skills. But the mountains have never lost their magnificent magic.

France

"L'Hexagone" is the down-to-earth description the French give their hexagonally-shaped country, which lies between Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Andorra, Spain, Monaco and Italy. The mythical capital, Paris, has the greatest urban, architectural and political appeal and still sets most trends. Chic fashions, philosophers and great cinema emanate from the metropolis. The fact that Paris is not France, and that it is possible to live like a god in France's traditional agrarian landscape, with its rich historical cultural heritage and the natural beauty of the countryside and the coasts, has long been known to the world. From the English Channel to Alsace and the French Alps to the Camargue and the Mediterranean, from Le Mans to Perpignan and the Pyrenees, from Bordeaux to the Basque Country, every landscape has its own specialities and facets. In this grandiose kaleidoscope of desires, everyone can find the piece of France that suits them. "La France" is a land of wine and cheese, of kir, cider and champagne, a land of menhirs, Roman aqueducts and amphitheatres, of castles and palaces, of Romanesque abbeys and great Gothic churches, of long rivers, the scent of lavender and pine, the chirping cicadas, the orchards, the patisserie, the nostalgic cars, the oysters de Bellone and the seafood platters that chansonnier George Brassens already enjoyed on the Sete canal. France is so much more and has crept into our minds, our stomachs and our hearts—with images that will remain unforgettable

Weegee - Society of the Spectacle

Offering a new perspective on Weegee’s oeuvre, Society of the Spectacle presents the photographer’s iconic images alongside lesser-known works. Weegee’s macabre tabloid photographs of murdered gangsters, bodies trapped in crashed cars, slums consumed by fire, and other poignant records of New York’s nocturnal low life in the 1930s and 40s are the stuff of legend. Lesser-known, however, is the work he created in his later years, when he satirized Hollywood, mocking its fleeting glory, jubilant crowds, and social scenes, and created celebrity portraits that he delighted in distorting using a palette of technical tricks. And herein lies the paradox of Weegee: how can two such wildly different bodies of work co-exist? Offering the first evaluation of the famed photographer’s career in its entirety, this book reconciles the two sides of Weegee by showing how the ‘spectacle’ was the unifying theme of his work. Over 130 images, some iconic, some more rarely seen, are accompanied by essays that explore the consistent themes throughout Weegee’s career, his documentary and photojournalism work, and his last great series taken on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film Dr. Strangelove.

Antonín pracuje se širokoúhlými objektivy, nejčastěji 28mm, takže musí do snímané situace téměř nakročit. „Dokavaď necejtíš ten smrad podpaží, bejby, tak dovopravdy nefotíš!“ popisuje svou pracovní metodu typickým kóanem…

David Bailey - Eighties

In the 1980s, fashion wanted to make a statement and found in legendary British fashion photographer David Bailey its perfect chronicler. After Bailey shaped the style of the Swinging Sixties, fashion in the eighties posed a new challenge: brighter colours, higher glamour, statuesque models, extreme makeup, spandex, lycra, jumpsuits, power dressing, big hair, and as Grace Coddington puts it in her introduction, “jackets with padded shoulders over the shortest mini-skirts and dangerously high-heeled shoes.” Eighties compiles Bailey’s era-defining fashion photography from the pages of Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, Tatler, and countless others. Featuring couture, catwalk, and ready-to-wear collections by the epoch’s seminal designers, including Azzedine Alaia, Comme des Garçons, Guy Laroche, Missoni, Stephen Jones, Valentino, and Yves Saint Laurent, the book stands as a testament to a decade that dismantled hierarchies of taste to reintroduce fun and sex into fashion, reminding us that we need not think of either as dirty words. Here, the jewellery sparkles, the silks shimmer, and the suits sprawl. The most beautiful are captured at their most playful, invincible, and provocatively sexy. We see fabled 1980s icons and beauties: Catherine Bailey, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Catherine Deneuve, Princess Diana, Jerry Hall, Marie Helvin, Grace Jones, Kelly LeBrock, Christy Turlington, Tina Turner, and many more. The cultural resonances of the 1980s present on our screens, runways, and concert stages make today ideal for recontextualising its enduring legacy of maximalism and excess. Eighties offers a unique opportunity to do so with David Bailey as a guide, and interpreter, who’s never afraid to wink at his audience. As Bailey says in his foreword, “The eighties turned out to be magic.” Here, that magic comes alive.

System Langhans (2xkniha)

Langhans: jedno jméno, jedno místo. Kronika domu v centru Prahy.

Česko-anglická publikace přináší výběr čtyřiceti fotografií doprovázených textem francouzského archeologa Alaina Schnappa a jím vybranými citáty cestovatelů, historiků a spisovatelů, kteří o těchto stavbách v minulosti psali. Kniha vyšla u příležitosti stejnojmenné výstavy konané v Uměleckoprůmyslovém museu v Praze. Josef Koudelka vždy fotografoval svět, jenž mizí a je potřeba si jej připomínat, ať už šlo o životní styl Romů, vpád vojsk Varšavské smlouvy do Československa, náboženské slavnosti či krajiny poznamenané lidskou činností.
