Daniel Kramer. Bob Dylan. A Year and a Day

Daniel Kramer's classic Bob Dylan portfolio captures the artist's transformative "big bang" year of 1964-65. Over the course of a year and a day, Kramer's extraordinary access to Bob Dylan on tour, in concert, and backstage, allowed for one of the most mesmerizing photographic portfolios of any recording artist and a stunning document of Dylan breaking through to superstardom.Highlights include the Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall concert with Joan Baez; the Bringing It All Back Home recording sessions; and the now-famous concert at Forest Hills, when Dylan's controversial transition to electric guitar exemplified his constant, cryptic state of becoming. As much a document of a seminal period of rock 'n' roll history as of Dylan himself, the pictures also feature such compelling friends and collaborators as Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Allen Ginsberg, and Albert Grossman.Bob Dylan: A Year and a Day presents a curated selection of more than 100 images, including outtakes from the Bringing It All Back Home album cover shoots. With stories throughout the book by Kramer, this is at once an intimate and evocative testament to a seminal photographer, to a particular point in time, and to an exceptional, mysterious artist at the moment his career went global.

Soviet Scientific Institutes

These photographs of once top-secret institutes reveal both fantastical and futuristic technology, alongside crumbling and decrepit facilities, forming a unique document of the condition and situation of scientific research in the post-Soviet landscape. In Soviet Scientific Institutes photographer Eric Lusito takes us on a journey through time, space and science. Gigantic control panels, monumental telescopes, inexplicable machinery - the facilities he documents might be found in comic book and graphic novel fantasies or the science fiction of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. But why were these institutes built and what purposes do they serve today? The Soviets promoted science as a utopian ideal to replace religion and rapidly modernise the country. 'Big science' projects, primarily for Cold War military purposes, involved thousands of researchers working in complete secrecy. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutes were left destitute, their sophisticated technology condemned to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the new landscape. Today, defying the odds, they persist - even in wartime - to continue their work. Lusito gained unique access to sites across former republics and satellites of the USSR - from a cosmic ray research centre in the remote Armenian mountains, to one of the world's largest radars located in Ukraine, which locals believed to be a climate-altering weapon. The first visual account of this once closed world, this awe-inspiring publication bears witness to our never-ending quest for knowledge.

Passport Photo Service

'For decades Philip Sharkey modestly ruled the London roost of passport and visa photography: the greatest, most trusted and admired practitioner in the field. Those lucky enough to have come before Philip’s lens always left feeling that we had participated in a ritual that elevated us to a special kind of club. This wonderfully produced memoir vividly brings back to life a vanished time in the capital. Delicious.’ – Stephen Fry A never-before-seen archive of 300 celebrity portraits from London’s iconic Passport Photo Service, where actors, writers, musicians, athletes, and other famous faces posed for their travel document photographs Since opening its doors in 1953, Passport Photo Service, an unassuming studio on Oxford Street in London, photographed thousands of people for passports, visas, and green cards – and some of them just happened to be famous. It was a family affair run by professional boxer turned photographer Dave Sharkey, his wife, Ann, and, eventually, their son Philip. Conveniently located near the US embassy and directly opposite the department store Selfridges, Passport Photo Service became the go-to place for passport photos thanks to word-of-mouth and its 'Ready in 10 Minutes' slogan, offering instant service before anyone else in the city was able to provide such a quick turnaround. This charming book is a collection of more than 300 never-before-published portraits taken over the course of six decades, including actors, writers, musicians, politicians, athletes, and more. Organized loosely alphabetically, Passport Photo Service includes such famous faces as Muhammad Ali, Shirley Bassey, Eric Clapton, John Cleese, Joan Collins, Sean Connery, Anton Corbijn, Tim Curry, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Dockery, Stefan Edberg, Mia Farrow, Tom Ford, Stephen Fry, Ava Gardner, J. Paul Getty, Althea Gibson, Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jagger, Angelina Jolie, Chaka Khan, Little Richard, Madonna, Rami Malek, Stella McCartney, George Michael, Carey Mulligan, Bill Murray, Peter O’Toole, Alan Rickman, Paul Robeson, Ringo Starr, Tilda Swinton, Shania Twain, Valentino, Gene Wilder, Kate Winslet, and Natalie Wood, among many others. More than one hundred of the portraits are accompanied by anecdotes and amusing stories, written by Philip Sharkey. Among his memories: The first celebrity to use their services, Errol Flynn, pushed open the door and, hands on hips, boomed, 'Yep, it’s me.' Muhammad Ali’s picture was taken on his way to the DRC (formerly Zaire) to fight George Foreman in the famous Rumble in the Jungle match. Sharkey’s uncle Peter suggested that perhaps Bianca Jagger remove her large hat for her photo, as the government might not accept the picture. She responded, 'They will for me.' She didn’t come back for a retake. In his introduction, which tells a brief history of his family’s business, Sharkey declares, 'One thing is for sure, whoever we photographed, famous or not – we treated them all with the same care and respect. In that moment, when the flash goes off, your passport photo becomes a great leveler.' Perfect for the photo historian, London nostalgic, or celebrity buff, Passport Photo Service’s design is an homage to the art of the passport, as well as the studio’s photo wallets that held developed prints, complete with a leatherette cover and a smart red stamp. Filled with a wonderfully eclectic assortment of subjects, this book is a breath of fresh air in the age of tightly controlled imagery. This volume charismatically yet emphatically celebrates the importance of vernacular photography and the story of a family-run business, revealing how images even made for travel documents can still be powerful portraits.

Cut Out

Cut Out presents the previously untold relationship between photography, feminist art and collage, from the 19th century to the present day. Female artists have long employed collage to reflect the ways in which identity is often constructed from conflicting, contrasting and contradictory parts. Cut Out explores the relationship between photography and feminist collage, foregrounding the use of femmage - a radical reclaiming of craft traditionally associated with women - as a resilient method within feminist and political art. Cut Out presents an expanded definition of collage and cutting techniques to encompass photomontage, assemblage and the photogram. Tracing a lineage from nineteenth-century makers to contemporary practitioners, we encounter Victorian album makers; Modernist, Surrealist and Dadaist innovators; and radical, second-wave feminist artists. Thematic sections include profiles written by expert contributors on key individuals, including Hannah Höch, Dora Maar and Lorna Simpson. Looking to the future as much as the past, Cut Out also reveals how the pioneering work of contemporary and digital artists continues to subvert dominant narratives and foster ever-expanding forms of photographic collage. At a moment when photography and its history are being actively contested and reappraised, Cut Out is a reminder of its political power.

Photo: Fred Kramer

V padesátých letech i později spolupracoval s podniky zahraničního obchodu (Jablonex, Skloexport, Centrotex, Kovo ad.) i s domácím Domem módy.

Brutalist Korea

In this elegant follow-up to the bestselling Brutalist Japan, Paul Tulett brings his distinctive eye to South Korea’s post-war architecture, capturing the austere beauty of concrete across cities and decades. Brutalist Korea features more than 220 full-color images of buildings from Seoul to Busan, Daegu to Daejeon. These include government complexes, university campuses, cultural institutions, and public housing—structures shaped by a period of rapid industrialization and national rebuilding, rendered here with clarity and nuance. Korean Brutalism emerged in the 1960s and ’70s, informed by modernist ideals and adapted to local conditions. Architects such as Kim Swoo-geun, Lee Jong- sup, Choi Maeng-gi, and Seung H-Sang designed buildings that combined geometric severity with regional sensitivity. Their work reflects a desire for permanence and purpose, and for an architectural identity rooted in both function and expression. Tulett’s photographs reveal not only the formal qualities of these buildings—modular repetition, raw surfaces, monumental scale—but also their relationship to the landscape, their weathering over time, and their place in Korea’s evolving visual culture. With informed, understated commentary, Brutalist Korea offers a rare visual journey through a style often misunderstood and increasingly at risk.

Same Sun Same Moon

This elegant collaboration pairs Michael Kenna’s luminous black-and-white landscapes with Pico Iyer’s contemplative prose, tracing the parallels of two lives lived in motion. Though they didn’t meet until they were both in their sixties, photographer Michael Kenna and writer Pico Iyer had been unknowingly following similar paths for decades. Both were born in England, studied near Oxford in the 1970s, moved to the U.S. West Coast, and fell in love with Japan. This book brings their work together in a profoundly personal collaboration: more than sixty of Kenna’s prints, each accompanied by an essay both from Iyer and Kenna himself. Kenna’s work—minimalist, often made in long exposure—captures fleeting moments of calm and clarity: a fog-bound canal in Venice, a deserted jetty in Mallorca, a line of trees dissolving into snow in Hokkaido. Spanning fifty years and five continents, these photographs offer meditations shaped by light, shadow, and quiet transformation. In prose that mirrors the restraint and depth of the images, Iyer writes about travel, childhood, coincidence, and the invisible threads that connect us. Beautifully printed and designed for slow reading and close looking, Same Sun Same Moon is a book for art lovers, writers, travelers, and anyone drawn to the subtle interplay of image and word, solitude and connection.

Walker Evans

A major reassessment of Walker Evans that shows him as a photographer both of his time and very much ahead of it. Walker Evans (1903-1975) is one of the great enduring figures of modern photography. His vivid images are inseparable from the history of the medium and the history of the USA. The subject matter was quintessentially American - small-town life, typical buildings, commercial signs and anonymous citizens - but Evans brought to them the curiosity and fascination of an outsider. His exacting eye defined an era while also questioning it. Pop artists and Conceptualists saw Evans as a pioneer and precursor, and his sensibility continues to inspire countless younger image makers. Walker Evans offers a broad overview of his work and its lasting influence on generations of artists. It brings together key photographs and projects spanning his entire career - from self-portraits of the 1920s to his Polaroid experiments in the 1970s - along with books and other publications that reflect his tireless capacity for observation. Together, the works reveal a creator who not only documented the world around him but also invited viewers to question the nature of photography and the perception of reality itself.

Bratislava

Úvodný text, preložený do anglického jazyka, napísal profesor Jozef Leikert.

Talamon saw it all during the golden age of soul, R&B, and funk. He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream.
