The Look

Beautifully illustrated with more than 200 photographs, including never-before-seen images, The Look is a stunning journey through Michelle Obama's style evolution, in her own words for the first time. In this celebration of style, from the moment she entered the public eye during her husband's U.S. Senate campaign through her time as the first Black First Lady of the United States and today as one of the country's most influential figures, Michelle Obama shares how she uses the beauty and intrigue of fashion to draw attention to her message. Featuring the voices of Meredith Koop, Obama's trusted stylist, as well as her makeup artist Carl Ray, hairstylists Yene Damtew and Njeri Radway, and many of the designers who have dressed Obama for notable events, The Look brings readers behind the scenes not only to reveal how her most memorable looks came together but also to tell a powerful story about how we present ourselves. Obama's intimate and candid stories illuminate how her approach to dressing has evolved throughout her life - from the colourful sheath dresses, cardigans, and brooches she wore during her time as First Lady to the bold suits, denim, and braids of her post-White House life and all the active looks and beautiful gowns in between. In The Look, Michelle Obama explores the joy and the purpose of fashion and beauty and how - when wielded with grace and care - they can uplift and affirm the values one holds most dear. Confidence, she concludes, cannot be put on. But when you're wearing something that's intentional or beloved, clothing can make you feel like the best version of yourself.

Zofia Kulik: Works

The first large-scale English language retrospective of one of Poland's leading contemporary artists, arriving at a transformative moment in her career. Zofia Kulik's photographs are a psychic collage of the self. Inspired by eroticism, feminism, and the political and social developments of post-war Poland, her expansive work offers a radical critique of not only what it means to be an artist and a woman, but of what it means to be human. Featuring her most pivotal series - including The Splendor of Myself - this expansive publication charts her rich and varied career, journeying from her earlier collaborations as KwieKulik to the development of her solo work. Shortly after graduating from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1971, Kulik formed the artistic duo KwieKulik with her then partner Przemyslaw Kwiek. Running the Studio of Documentation and Propagation Activities (PDDiU) from their home in Warsaw, the pair created avant-garde films, photographs and objects, as well as performances, installations and interventionist texts. After splitting in 1987, Kulik expressed a new-found desire for her work to be present in museums and institutions. Subsequently developing the black-and-white photomontages for which she is now most famous, Kulik would combine complex patterns with often hundreds of images. Painstakingly detailed and often physically imposing, these images reflect an artist committed to exploring the murky terrains of the psyche. Bringing together these pivotal works alongside Kulik's lesser-known but no less radical projects, this book features comprehensive yet accessible texts from leading writers to provide a much needed introduction to one of Poland's most important living artists.

The Camera at War

It is said that the first casualty of war is truth. But in the arena of war photography, the truth is never simple. Drawing on an incredible range of imagery from the Imperial War Museum's vast collection and other major archives around the globe, expert curator Hilary Roberts presents a new perspective on the role of image manipulation in this field over the past 170 years, exploring the consequences for our understanding of historic and contemporary conflicts. From the staged scenes and hand-coloured Daguerreotypes of the Crimean War at the very beginning of conflict photography to the AI-generated protest and propaganda imagery of today, Roberts explores the myriad ways in which layers of meaning can be added, erased or changed completely. As The Camera at War so powerfully reveals, sometimes this has been done in order to present a closer approximation of the truth, and sometimes for the causes of national morale, subterfuge and control of the winning narrative.

Helen Levitt

Published to accompany a major touring exhibition, this is the most comprehensive survey to date of the groundbreaking American photographer Helen Levitt. Over six decades, Helen Levitt (1913–2009) explored the streets of her native New York with a handheld camera. Influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, she found inspiration in the theatre and spontaneity of the street, capturing everyday moments in urban life and forging a distinct visual language from her private observations. Exuding a keen warmth and sensitivity for human gesture and movement, her photographs capture, in James Agee’s words, the ‘pure spontaneity of true folk art’. Accompanying a major touring exhibition of Levitt’s work, the first of its kind to draw from her complete archive, this ambitious publication showcases her entire output. It not only includes her best-known photographs, but also features rarely seen early works from her first year using a Leica and all fifty works from the original edit of her classic 1965 photobook A Way of Seeing, with record prints preserved by Levitt herself. Essays by a range of scholars and specialists hone in on key thematic, technical and biographical aspects of Levitt’s life and work, including an examination of the photos she took during her trip to Mexico in 1941, her innovative use of colour in the 1950s and her late work from the 1980s, providing an authoritative insight into one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

Nakolik musíme vědět, co vidíme, abychom to skutečně viděli? Nakolik si musíme viděné domýšlet a nakolik si můžeme být jisti tím, co vidíme, a tím, co víme? Obrazová část knihy Tunelové vidění sestává z fotografií, fotogramů a daguerrotypií Ondřeje Přibyla a je rozdělená do tří kapitol (Mechanický divák, Tunelové vidění a Modely a konstanty) doplněných citacemi a autorovými komentáři. ENGLISH VERSION: The central theme of the publication is seeing and perceiving the world and the limits that restrict our perception. How much do we need to know what we see in order to truly see it? How much do we need to imagine what we see, and how certain can we be of what we see and what we know? The visual part of the book Tunnel Vision consists of photographs, photograms, and daguerreotypes by Ondřej Přibyl and is divided into three chapters (Mechanical Viewer, Tunnel Vision, and Models and Constants), supplemented by quotations and the author's comments. The authors of the text section are Petr Vaňous and Pavel Dvořák, who also contributed to the concept of the entire publication. The book includes an interview with Ondřej Přibyl by Karel Haloun, and instead of an afterword, there is a text by Kamil Nábělek. The title of the publication refers not only to the diagnosis, when the affected person loses peripheral vision for various reasons and is only able to focus on partial phenomena, but above all it is a metaphor through which the author attempts to name the fact that our perception is always limited to a mere slice of space and time, to the fact that it is not possible to see the world as a whole and all at once. And it is precisely photography, with its automatic birth, inevitable causality, and temporality, that Přibyl considers an extremely suitable tool for illustrating these reflections.

Walter Chandoha. Dogs. Photographs 1941–1991

Man’s Best Friend The world’s most beloved pet photographer turns his lens on our canine companions The world appears to be divided into cat and dog lovers, but fortunately Walter Chandoha, the 20th century’s greatest pet photographer found himself happily in the middle. He loved these intriguing creatures equally for their unique beauty and individualism, and as subjects to photograph in a career spanning over 70 years. While working on his critically acclaimed TASCHEN book Cats, Chandoha handpicked his favorite dog photos for a potential follow-up title, putting into carefully marked boxes hundreds of contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies. Chandoha sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 98, but his legacy lives on in this dashing sequel dedicated to man’s best friend. “Walter Chandoha’s photographs of dogs are compelling not just because dogs have an inherent charm, but because the person behind the camera was a master of his craft,” writes the photography critic Jean Dykstra in the book’s introduction. We see terriers, collies, beagles, bloodhounds, poodles, small dogs, big dogs, show dogs, working dogs, and many more, featuring over 60 breeds photographed in both black-and-white and glorious Kodachrome. Spanning a 50-year period, the book is divided into six sections, and each chapter reveals Chandoha’s exceptional combination of technique, versatility, and soul. The opening chapter “In the Studio” focuses on formal portraiture; next it’s “Strike a Pose” where our canine companions ham it up for the camera; in “Out and About” they get to roam and play, often photographed with Chandoha’s own children; next it’s “Best in Show” with Chandoha using his reportage skills to capture vintage dog shows from the Mad Men era; in “Tails from the City,” the dogs are hitting the streets of mid-century New York; and in the closing chapter “Country Dogs,” it’s back to nature, the fields, and the beaches. Dogs is an unleashed photographic tribute to these lovable and loyal creatures.

Robert Doisneau. Paris. 45th Ed.

An empathetic lens Robert Doisneau's eye for all things human As sensitive to human suffering as to the simple pleasures of life, Robert Doisneau is one of the most celebrated exponents of the Photographie humaniste that swept through the 1950s. Cherished in particular for his soulful portraits of Paris, Doisneau demonstrated a unique ability to find – and perfectly frame – charismatic characters, entertaining episodes, and fleeting moments of humor and affection. A summation of a spectacular career, this extensive Doisneau collection includes all his best-loved images from Paris alongside many lesser-known compositions which equally rejoice in “the ordinary gestures of ordinary people in ordinary situations.” The many quotations from the photographer throughout the volume immerse the reader in Doisneau’s thoughts and give verbal expression to the sensitivity, warmth, and wit which characterize his pictures. Through the images, we are transported to the grim suburbs of Doisneau’s youth and to the world of manual labor whose nobility he so admired. A number of color shots of the transformed suburbs of Doisneau’s childhood reveal a different, more critical eye to the master photographer. For this new monograph on all aspects of the life and oeuvre of Robert Doisneau, his longtime friend and TASCHEN author Jean Claude Gautrand had unlimited access to the extensive photo archive Atelier Robert Doisneau. The preface is by Doisneau’s daughters Francine Deroudille and Annette Doisneau.

Oasis: Trying to find a way out of nowhere

Iconic photos by Jill Furmanovsky chart the dramatic career of Oasis – on stage, backstage and in the studio – paired with exclusive commentary by Noel Gallagher Jill Furmanovsky’s unparalleled work with Oasis stretches from the end of 1994 – when the band’s debut album, Definitely Maybe, became the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history at the time – to their last tense shows in 2009, which culminated in their split. Jill was given unprecedented access to countless worldwide performances and many recording sessions. In this beautiful volume, overseen and edited by Noel Gallagher, award-winner Furmanovsky presents classic highlights and unseen images from her complete Oasis archive, which she describes as her best body of work, as well as insightful observations taken from notes she made at the time. Organized chronologically, the book depicts more than 500 photographs, contact sheets and sequenced film strips of the band on stage, backstage, on the road, in the studio and behind the scenes. Jill captured the drama of the band’s lifestyle during the 1990s when, as she said, ‘they were on a comet, hanging on for dear life’. The access she was given allowed closeness, and she was able to document the competitive and at times volatile relationship between Noel and Liam Gallagher up to their split in 2009, creating a poignant visual diary that is more than the sum of its parts. In this book she extends the visual story to 2025*, capturing the band in rehearsal for the upcoming reunion tour. Accompanying the images is illuminating commentary by Noel Gallagher, who relates the inside stories of the events pictured in many of the shoots and demonstrates an honest and touching relationship between band and photographer. Three essays by music journalists provide context to the band’s story, and an introduction by Jill celebrates the supreme significance of Oasis in her 50+ years photographing musicians. * Definitely…Maybe Jill Furmanovsky has photographed legendary rock musicians for more than 50 years, including Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Blondie, The Clash, The Ramones, The Pretenders, Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Amy Winehouse and Oasis. In 2024 she received a Lifetime Achievement award from Amateur Photography magazine; the Legend of the year award from So.Co for Image of Music Awards; and the Abbey Road ICON award. Noel Gallagher is the primary songwriter, lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Oasis, the band that defined the era of Cool Britannia. In August 1994 Oasis’s first album, Definitely Maybe, entered the UK charts at number one and received widespread critical and commercial success, as did their next two albums, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) and Be Here Now (1997). The band split in 2009 but are reforming for a worldwide tour in 2025. ‘It’s been an honour to have been associated with her for 30 years’ Noel Gallagher ‘The iconic images by Furmanovsky capture the glorious madness of it all’ Rolling Stone ‘If you look at her Oasis photographs it is one of the great essays in the history of photography’ Gail Buckland, author, curator, photo-historian

Richard Avedon Immortal

An unflinching exploration of aging from one of the twentieth century's most influential photographers For more than half a century, Richard Avedon sought to represent advancing age in the faces of the people he photographed. From his earliest years at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue through to the twenty-first century, Avedon routinely and audaciously broke the rule of flattering public personalities in his portraits. Instead, he chose to highlight the onslaught of what he called the "avalanche of age," dramatizing the universal experience of getting older. Accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition at The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Immortal is the first book to delve into Avedon's unflinching representation of aging throughout his career. This elegant hardcover volume features nearly 100 portraits of cultural luminaries, each printed in striking tritone, such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Truman Capote, Marcel Duchamp, Duke Ellington, Toni Morrison, Patti Smith, and Stephen Sondheim, as well as one of Avedon's last self-portraits. Texts by a star-studded cohort of authors, including Vince Aletti, Adam Gopnik, Paul Roth, and Gaëlle Morel, shed new light on an under-represented element of Avedon's practice. Thoughtfully edited and beautifully produced, Immortal testifies emphatically to the determination with which people confront the relentless advance of mortality.
