Tarkovsky - Films, Stills, Polaroids & Writings
Andrey Tarkovsky was the most important Russian filmmaker of the post-war era, and one of the world's most renowned cinematic geniuses. He directed the first five of his seven films - Ivan's Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror and Stalker - in the Soviet Union, but in 1982 defected to Italy, where he made Nostalgia. His final film, The Sacrifice, was produced in Sweden in 1985. Tarkovsky's films are characterized by metaphysical themes, extended takes, an absence of conventional dramatical structure and plot, and a dream-like, visionary style of cinematography. They achieve a spiritual intensity and transcendent beauty that many consider to be without parallel.
This book presents extended sequences of stills from each of the films alongside synopses and cast and crew listings. It includes reflections on Tarkovsky's work from fellow artists and writers including Jean-Paul Sartre and Ingmar Bergman, for whom Tarkovsky was `the greatest, the one who invented a new language.' Martin Parr: Beach Therapy
During his long career as a photographer, Martin Parr has always photographed on beaches, particularly in the UK. He has often used the beach as a laboratory to experiment with new cameras and techniques. So far example, when he changed from black and white to medium format colour in the early 80s his first major project was about New Brighton, a run down seaside resort near Liverpool.
In recent months he has started exploring the beach with the aid of a telephoto lens. This lens is rarely used in the world of art and documentary photography so it is a challenge to find new ways of using it. Often this involves incorporating the vegetation on the perimeter with the beach as a backdrop, both in and out of focus.
So over his long career he has tried everything from a close up macro lens, a medium format wide angled camera and finally this latest offering with the telephoto.

This exhibition includes his striking key black-and-white and colour photographic series, as well as never-before-seen material from his personal archive.
This exhibition, exclusive to Sydney, will be the largest retrospective of Goldblatt's work in the region and marks the photographer's final project before his death.
Anja Niemi: In Character
Anja Niemi: In Character is the first career retrospective/monograph by one of the most exciting talents working in contemporary photography, whose work has emerged as a distinctive force within the venerable tradition of conceptual self-portraiture. A photo-artist who works alone - photographing, staging and acting out the characters in all of her images - Niemi is a constant presence, in character, in her work, developing complex, nuanced narratives through evocative costume and styling, her characters framed and formed within meticulously staged mise-en-scene. In her bewitching `Darlene & Me' series, for example, she reconfigures the concept of the Hitchcock blonde within a pristine Lynchian landscape for her own visual pleasure - and ours - while in `She Could Have Been A Cowboy' she turns the lens to a life lived under the constraints of conformity.
Anja Niemi is now at the `breakout moment' in her career, having had exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, New York, Oslo and Paris, and with her first museum retrospective show opening at Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm in February 2019. Nick Brandt: This Empty World
This Empty World, Nick Brandt's new monograph, features a series of dramatically staged photographs that bring together and reveal the animals and people of East Africa as the victims of environmental degradation in an emotionally powerful, cinematic way. Moving into colour photography for the first time, the work is both a technical tour-de-force and a massively ambitious project in which several sets are constructed on a scale typically only seen in film production. Each panoramic image is a combination of two moments in time, almost all of them captured weeks apart from the exact same camera position.
Brandt first builds and lights a partial set, then waits for the animals that inhabit the region to enter the frame. Once captured on camera, the full set is built with the camera remaining fixed in place. The sets include bridge and highway construction sites, a petrol station, a bus station and even a dead forest.
Completing the scene with a huge cast drawn from local communities, Brandt then photographs the second sequence. The final large scale prints are a composite of the two intricately plotted elements. Viewed as a whole, the images vividly illustrate a world in which, overwhelmed by runaway human development, there is no longer space for animals to survive, and beg the question: what kind of world will we live in when stripped of its natural wonders.
Photographed on unprotected, inhabited Maasai community land, after the sets were removed and their elements recycled, no evidence of the images now remains in the landscape.

Muži v kaftanech a s dlouhými vousy jsou oblíbeným motivem, který si zde fotografují turisté. Autorka knihy však směřovala mnohem dál. Praha 1945 - 1958
Fotografická kniha významného českého kameramana a fotografa Josefa Illíka, spolutvůrce filmů Král Šumavy, Kočár do Vídně, Kladivo na čarodějnice, Ucho, Už zase skáču přes kaluže,Tři oříšky pro Popelku, Princ a Večernice a dalších, předkládá čtenáři působivé obrazy Prahy a jejích obyvatel, které autor citlivě zachytil v letech 1945-1958. Naskýtá se tak jedinečná možnost spatřit místa, která již dávno neexistují, nebo se k nepoznání změnila, a pocítit pražskou atmosféru tehdejší doby.
Josef Illík, původní profesí fotograf, po sobě zanechal cca 4000 neroztříděných černobílých negativů, které nasnímal na legendární fotoaparát Rolleiflex. Je zajímavé, že prakticky nikdy z negativů nepořizoval fotografie a na snímky se po jejich pořízení tudíž nepodíval. Dnes, když se po desetiletích započalo s archivací celé sbírky a snímky mají své první diváky, se ukázalo, že se jedná o výjimečné fotografické dílo, jež si zaslouží knižní vydání.
Fotografie, které hrají
Kniha Fotografie, které hrají představuje snímky dvou desítek fotografů, kteří v současnosti patří u nás k těm nejvytíženějším v oblasti hudební fotografie. Editor Ondřej Bezr si zvolil nesnadný úkol: ukázat práci autorů, zachycujících na fotografiích hudbu, její atmosféru, ducha i poselství. Oslovil nakonec ty, jejichž fotografický doprovod se objevoval v médiích, do nichž během téměř třiceti let psal. Mezi autory najdeme profesionály stejně jako amatéry - tedy fotografy, kteří se živí něčím jiným, ale na výsledcích jejich práce se to rozhodně poznat nedá. Někteří z nich preferují velká pódia a světové hvězdy, jiní naopak upřednostňují malé kluby a alternativnější žánry. Co fotograf, to osobnost. Jediné, co mají všichni společné, je láska k muzice a snaha zachytit ji objektivem svého fotoaparátu.
