Natural History Drawings of Malaya: Complete Farquahar Collection
These natural history drawings capture the region's biodiversity with remarkable detail, offering invaluable insight into Southeast Asia's environment in the early 19th century.
This book brings together for the first time all 477 pieces in Colonel William Farquhar's collection of natural history drawings, commissioned during his time as British Resident and Commandant of Malacca from 1803 to 1818. Covering a wide spectrum of flora and fauna, the evocative paintings were rendered in brilliant watercolour by Chinese artists who employed both Chinese and Western painting techniques.
In an era when photography was non-existent, the only means of recording nature and wildlife was through painting. Accompanied by authoritative essays and detailed captions, Natural History Drawings: The Complete William Farquhar Collection is a valuable addition to the art or nature lover's library, and indispensable to those with an interest in the region. It showcases some fascinating wildlife still present in the region today and is also an important record of species that have been lost or are diminished in number.

Kawase Hasui: Modern Visions of Japan
Discover the timeless beauty of Kawase Hasui, the master of shin hanga, in this stunning new book, featuring his most breathtaking woodblock prints and expert insights into his legacy.
Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the most important and prolific Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. He was one of the main creators of the shin hanga ('new prints') movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects in a style influenced by Western painting. Shin hanga prints are harmoniously balanced designs, printed on the highest quality paper using the finest pigments, and in small editions. They are the fruit of a traditional yet successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block cutter and printer and have become increasingly popular among collectors of Japanese prints in the last decade.
Hasui began his artistic career studying Japanese painting. However, soon after seeing Shinsui's Eight Views of Lake Biwa series, Hasui turned to woodblock printing in 1919. Shozaburo Watanabe was the first to recognize his artistic genius, and Hasui Kawase soon became the most popular artist working for this prestigious publisher. He produced nearly a thousand woodcuts in a career that spanned almost forty years. Towards the end of his life, the Japanese government recognized him as a 'Living National Treasure' for his contribution to Japanese culture.
Japanese Woodblock Prints
From Edouard Manet’s portrait of naturalist writer Émile Zola sitting among his Japanese art finds to Van Gogh’s meticulous copies of the Hiroshige prints he devotedly collected, 19th-century pioneers of European modernism made no secret of their love of Japanese art. In all its sensuality, freedom, and effervescence, the woodblock print is single-handedly credited with the wave of japonaiserie that first enthralled France and, later, all of Europe?but often remains misunderstood as an “exotic” artifact that helped inspire Western creativity.
The fact is that the Japanese woodblock print is a phenomenon of which there exists no Western equivalent. Some of the most disruptive ideas in modern art?including, as Karl Marx put it, that “all that is solid melts into air”?were invented in Japan in the 1700s and expressed like never before in the designs of such masters as Hokusai, Utamaro, and Hiroshige in the early 19th century.
This book lifts the veil on a much-loved but little-understood art form by presenting the 200 most exceptional Japanese woodblock prints in their historical context. Ranging from the 17th-century development of decadent ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” to the decline and later resurgence of prints in the early 20th century, the images collected in this edition make up an unmatched record not only of a unique genre in art history, but also of the shifting mores and cultural development of Japan.
From mystical mountains to snowy passes, samurai swordsmen to sex workers in shop windows, each piece is explored as a work of art in its own right, revealing the stories and people behind the motifs. We discover the four pillars of the woodblock print?beauties, actors, landscapes, and bird-and-flower compositions?alongside depictions of sumo wrestlers, kabuki actors, or enticing courtesans?rock stars who populated the “floating world” and whose fan bases fueled the frenzied production of woodblock prints. We delve into the horrifying and the obscure in prints where demons, ghosts, man-eaters, and otherworldly creatures torment the living?stunning images that continue to influence Japanese manga, film, and video games to this day. We witness how, in their incredible breadth, from everyday scenes to erotica, the martial to the mythological, these works are united by the technical mastery and infallible eye of their creators and how, with tremendous ingenuity and tongue-in-cheek wit, publishers and artists alike fought to circumvent government censorship.
This two-volume edition in a box, crafted with traditional Japanese binding, presents reproductions of the finest extant impressions from the vaults of museums and private collections across the globe. Stunning fold-outs invite us to study even the subtlest details, while extensive descriptions guide us through this frantic period in Japanese art history.

Postrčím im iba ekrazit a zápalnú šnúru a čím diskrétnejšie a neosobnejšie to urobím, o to môže byť výsledok osobitejší. Pre všetkých zúčastnených: pre divákov, pre obraz aj pre mňa.“
Hiroshige & Eisen. The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido
The Kisokaido route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country’s then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaido journey.
After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838. Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido, we find the artists’ distinct styles as much as their shared expertise.
From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of landscape with grandiose and evocative scenes, whether it’s the peaceful banks of the Ota River, the forbidding Wada Pass, or a moonlit ascent between Yawata and Mochizuki. Taken as a whole, The Sixty-Nine Stations collection represents not only a masterpiece of woodblock practice, including bold compositions and an experimental use of color, but also a charming tapestry of 19th-century Japan, long before the specter of industrialization.
This TASCHEN edition revives the series with due scale and splendor. Sourced from the only-known set of a near-complete run of the first edition of the series, this legendary publication is reproduced in the finest quality, bound in the Japanese tradition and with uncut paper. A perfect companion piece to TASCHEN’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, it is at once a visual delight and a major artifact from the bygone era of Imperial Japan.

Point Blank
Point Blank (Quick Studies) is the first major publication of Bob Dylan's artwork in over a decade, featuring nearly 100 never-before-seen drawings.
Bob Dylan is a master at telling stories, creating moods and provoking feelings – not only in music and the written word but also in visual art, which he has been creating since the 1960s. This publication of his art features nearly 100 black-and-white drawings that were completed between 2021 and 2022 and served as the basis for his latest exhibition – also titled Point Blank – at London's Halcyon Gallery in early 2025.
The works vary between portraits, still lifes and landscapes: roller-skating lovers, a suit of armour, a suspension bridge, a karaoke singer, a roll of Scotch tape, a Parisian canal, a man with a crooked smile. Accompanying the artwork are short prose vignettes written by Eddie Gorodetsky, Jackie Hamilton and Lucy Sante that further enhance the images' evocativeness. Dylan's ability to find beauty and mystery in the seemingly mundane is one of his great gifts – and the gift he's continually given to the public over the years, including now with Point Blank.
Picturebook Makers: Part 2
Following the success of part one, twelve more world-class picturebook makers share their processes, inspire us with stunning illustrations, and demonstrate the immense creative potential of this unique and dynamic art form.
Far from being simple, picturebook creation can be a complex, lengthy and enigmatic process. Part two of the Picturebook Makers series once again gives voice to twelve much-loved contemporary picturebook artists. With great generosity, the international creators share their processes, inspirations, challenges, doubts, insights, and show us that "the unseen evolution of an idea is as interesting as the final result", as observed by Shaun Tan in part one of this series.
The intimate talks with the creators allow us to not only discover the myriad of ways in which the initial idea for a picturebook can arise, but also the wildly different creative processes which inform the development of each work. As Meghan Cox Gurdon observes in her review of Picturebook Makers in The Wall Street Journal: “There’s mystery in the process and, with luck, magic in the outcome.”
The Picturebook Makers series reveals the picturebook’s immense creative potential, celebrates outstanding international picturebooks and their creators, and constitutes an inspiring collection of picturebook knowledge for anyone interested in this unique and dynamic art form.
Featuring Carson Ellis, Axel Scheffler, Anna Höglund, Sydney Smith, Kristin Roskifte, André Letria, Issa Watanabe, Valerio Vidali, Anete Melece, Vincent Pianina, Marika Maijala, and Jimmy Liao.
Šťastnou cestu, kamaráde
Vzpomínkový knižní katalog na ostravsko-valmezského malíře Karla Noska (1991–2020). Nosek se uměl pohybovat na pomezí. Jeho malby někdy více, někdy méně insitní, byly dynamizovány pohybem, rychlostí, nebo expresivní gesticitou, nezřídka do obrazových ploch vmalovával textové poznámky. Rozhodně diváka nenechal klidným a pod rouškou vtipných narativů ukrýval kritické ostny. Malbou se tak pokoušel o angažovaný impakt témat podstatných pro celou společnost.

Hokusai. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji has long been a centerpiece of Japanese cultural imagination, and nothing captures this with more virtuosity than the landmark woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). The renowned printmaker documents 19th-century Japan with exceptional artistry and adoration, celebrating its countryside, cities, people, and serene natural beauty. Produced at the peak of Hokusai’s artistic ambition, the series is a quintessential work of ukiyo-e that earned the artist world-wide recognition as a leading master of his craft.
The prints illustrate Hokusai’s own obsession with Mount Fuji as well as the flourishing domestic tourism of the late Edo period. Just as the mountain was a cherished view for travelers heading to the capital Edo (now Tokyo) along the Tokaido road, Mount Fuji is the infallible backdrop to each of the series’ unique scenes. Hokusai captures the distinctive landscape and provincial charm of each setting with a vivid palette and exquisite detail.
Including the iconic Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa (also The Great Wave), this widely celebrated series is a treasure of international art history. Among only a few complete reprints of the series, this XL edition pays homage to Hokusai’s striking colors and compositions with unprecedented care and magnitude. Bound in the Japanese tradition, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji presents the original 36 plates plus the additional 10 later added by the artist.
The perfect companion piece to TASCHEN’s One Hundred Views of Edo and The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido, this publication paints an enchanting picture of pre-industrial Japan and is itself a stunning monument to the art of woodblock printing.
Peter Július Kern - Maliar Liptova / Painter of the Liptov Region
