Late Works of J. M. W. Turner: The Artist and his Critics
An exploration of Turner's final, vital years, including new readings of some of his most significant paintings
The paintings and drawings Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) produced from 1835 to his death in 1851 are seen by many as his most audacious and compelling work, a typical example of "late style." In this study, Sam Smiles goes beyond late style, with its focus on formal qualities and assumptions about personal expression, as an explanatory framework for Turner's late works. Instead, he argues that Turner, in his final fifteen years, was an artist entirely engaged with his own times.
Smiles examines the artist's critical reception in these years and scrutinizes accounts that presumed Turner's physical and mental health collapsed in his seventies, to see what can be reliably said about his work as he aged. Emerging from this study is an artist who used his final years to consolidate the principles that had motivated him throughout his career.

Jiří Georg Jilovský
Jiří Jílovský (1884-1958) vstoupil do profesionálního života po ukončení pražské akademie v roce 1908, kdy se ve skupině Jung-Prag zaujal místo Richarda Teschnera.
Mimo knižní úpravy byl autorem ex-libris, u kterého se řadí mezi zakladatele žánru, jako takového. Byl virtuózním kreslířem a ovládal všechny grafické techniky. V malbě se především zabýval portréty, malbou v plenéru a starou Prahou. Tu zachycoval i v grafice. Dá se označit spolu s Aloisem Wiererem za poslední novoromantické malíře. Důležité bylo i jeho členství v pražské zednářské lóži Schlaraffie, sídlící ve Štěpánské ulici. Řada prací, zejména z počátku jeho tvorby, se zaobírá mytologií, pohádkou a symbolikou. V jeho podání má každý prvek svébytný význam, například v grafikách staré Prahy si pohrává s oblohou, která určuje náladu, zatímco drobná figurální stafáž vypráví příběh.
Za druhé světové války jeho dva synové zemřeli v koncentračním táboře. On sám přežil zásluhou toho, že ho z Osvětimi převezli do Sachsenhausenu, kde byl zaměstnán v padělatelské dílně (příběh byl zfilmován pod názvem Ďáblova dílna), která vyráběla padělky anglických liber.
Po návratu z koncentračního tábora se snažil vrátit se ke své práci. Ateliér byl stejně, jako u řady dalších česko-německých autorů za války zničen. Většina volných prací, tak nenávratně zmizela. Jiří Georg Jílovský umírá zapomenut v roce 1958.
Arno Pařík, největším znalec Jilovského tvorby, ji přehledně propojil do tematických kapitol, rozsáhlý obrazový doprovod je sumou toho nejlepšího z jeho díla.
Bruegel, Paintings
The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30-1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba's brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content.
Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He then increasingly turned to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Rather than idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the issues of his day, addressing the horrors of religious warfare and taking a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions.
This book is derived from our XXL monograph, which saw TASCHEN undertake a comprehensive photographic survey of the artist's oeuvre. Matisse: The Books
The livre d'artiste, or 'artist's book', is among the most prized in rare book collections. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the greatest artists to work in this genre, creating his most important books over a period of eighteen years from 1932 to 1950 - a time of personal upheaval and physical suffering, as well as conflict and occupation for France. Oldřich Kulhánek
Katalog představuje dílo známého grafika a mj. autora českých bankovek, u příležitosti jeho nedožitých 80. narozenin. Ukazuje krystalizaci jeho apokalyptického realismu na pozadí dobové vizuality. Předkládá přednostně ta díla, která umělec zanechal ve svém ateliéru a váží se k období vymezenému 60. až 80. lety 20. století. V knize prezentovaný soubor mimo jiné ukáže, jak celou autorovou tvorbou prostupuje princip koláže a jak výrazně do ní zasáhla dobová reportážní a reklamní fotografie. K vidění jsou zde nejen známější grafiky (lepty a litografie), ale také kresby a soubor koláží, které byly vstupní branou do jeho umělecké praxe.

Česká secese
V devadesátých letech 19. století se v Praze, podobně tomu bylo v Mnichově, Vídni či Berlíně, rozvinula činnost spolku mladých umělců, který vznikl jako secese (odštěpení) z tradičních uměleckých struktur. Za svůj hlavní úkol si určil prosazovat nové moderní umění. Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes se stal jádrem generačního seskupování a v roce 1896 zahájil vydávání vlastního periodika Volné směry. Od roku 1898, kdy otevřel první spolkové výstavy, byl již neopominutelným reprezentantem české výtvarné kultury. Pro uměleckou orientaci spolku byla hlavním příkladem soudobá Francie, pomáhající překonávat lokální nacionalistické zájmy, ale vedení časopisu a spolku, kde vynikali výtvarný a literární kritik F. X. Šalda, architekt Jan Kotěra, sochař Stanislav Sucharda a malíř Jan Preisler, sledovalo celou mezinárodní uměleckou scénu. Zápas o naplnění ideálu moderního umění ukázal potom plný význam pojmu secese, když další generace, nastupující po přelomové výstavě Edvarda Muncha v Praze (1905), vyvolala krizi svým příklonem k nejaktuálnějšímu kubismu. Tento dramatický vývoj českého umění je sledován jako postupné vyhraňování tří hlavních programových směrů: tendence naturalisticko-impresionistické, symbolistické a ornamentálně dekorativní. Realizovány byly separátně, ale jejich vzájemný vztah dává secesi hlubší umělecký smysl a narušuje obecné povědomí, chápající secesi zpravidla jako eklektický dekorativní styl, který odezněl s počátkem 20. století.
Gaudi
The life of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) was full of complexity and contradictions. As a young man he joined the Catalonian nationalist movement and was critical of the church; toward the end of his life he devoted himself completely to the construction of one single spectacular church, La Sagrada Familia. In his youth, he courted a glamorous social life and the demeanor of a dandy. By the time of his death in a tram accident on the streets of Barcelona, his clothes were so shabby that passersby assumed he was a beggar.
Gaudi's incomparable architecture channels much of this multifaceted intricacy. Basquiat
The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s under the tag SAMO, spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. He appeared as part of a thriving underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As a painter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the established milieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.
Basquiat's expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated words and phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane history and the politics of street life-so when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat answered "royalty, heroism and the streets." In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of art stars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 was on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had become one of the most successful artists of his time.

Van Eyck
Often imitated but never equaled, Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) left an indelible impression on Renaissance art and paved the way for future realist painters. With its unprecedented precision and masterful use of color, Arnolfini Double Portrait, depicting the wedding of a young couple, is testament to the mastery of the Flemish painter and leader of the Early Netherlandish school. Van Eyck painted both secular and religious subject matter, emphasizing a naturalism and realism that moved seamlessly between 15th-century everyday life and poetic, heavenly settings. Velazquez
Manet called him “the greatest painter of all.” Picasso was so inspired by his masterpiece Las Meninas that he painted 44 variations of it. Francis Bacon painted a study of his portrait of Pope Innocent X. Monet and Renoir, Corot and Courbet, Degas and Dalí… for so many champions of art history, the ultimate sounding board was—and remains—Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599–1660).

The authors
José López-Rey (1905–1991) taught Italian Renaissance at the University of Madrid and worked as an art advisor for the Spanish Ministry of Education. Before the end of the Spanish Civil War, he emigrated to the USA, where he resumed his teaching career at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York. In 1973 he was awarded emeritus status. López-Rey was a corresponding member of the Hispanic Society of America and a consultant and contributor to several international art journals, including the Gazette des Beaux Arts and Art News.
Odile Delenda, graduate of the École du Louvre, served as professor there, and then as deputy head of the department of paintings at the Musée du Louvre until 2007. She has collaborated on several exhibitions of old master paintings. A research fellow at the Wildenstein Institute in Paris since 1990, she has continued her study of Spanish art from the Siglo de Oro. She is, among other works, the author of Vélasquez, peintre religieux (1993) and, under the auspices of the Wildenstein Institute, the first critical catalogue raisonné of the painted oeuvre of Francisco de Zurbarán and his studio (2009/10).
