Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Drawings

An authoritative analysis of the drawings (including watercolours and pastels) of twenty leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in one magnificent volume. Manet, Pissarro, Morisot, Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and their colleagues made some of the most beautiful drawings in the history of art. This book sets drawings by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists in the context of late 19th-century France and explains why these particular works are as important as their paintings in the representation of modernity. A new approach to materials and a wholly inclusive attitude to exhibitions gave drawings a more elevated status in this period than ever before, which avant-garde artists welcomed in their preference for scenes from contemporary life. For the first time also, painting and drawing shared the same stylistic principles of spontaneity, freer handling and lack of finish. Pastels by Degas, watercolours by Cézanne, pen-and-ink drawings by Van Gogh and mixed media works by Toulouse-Lautrec have an autonomy of their own, which proved instrumental in the development of modern art. The distinguished art historian Christopher Lloyd examines the drawings of twenty of the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, highlighting an aspect of French avant-garde art that remains relatively unexplored and was of immense importance for the art movements that followed.

Camille Corot

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was one of the greatest painters of human representations. His work is known all over the world, but has so far remained rather hidden from the general public. Above all, he is regarded as the most important modern landscape painter in France. Born at the time of the emerging classicism, he experienced the development of the great styles in lath century painting - but never felt a part of only one. The art critics at the beginning of the loth century nevertheless described him as the „pioneer of Impressionism". The artist cared little about such discussions. He loved to travel. He was constantly searching for the optimal light and new impressions, which he took with him into his studio to paint.

Jackson Pollock - The Early Years: 1934-1947

Trace the genesis of Jackson Pollock's work in this intimate portrait of the radical twentieth-century artist-from his childhood in the American West through the diverse cultural influences that charted his artistic evolution. Jackson Pollock's "drip technique" paintings are among the most readily recognizable works of modern art, and they launched his career in 1947. Yet less is known of his earlier works, which are seldom presented together as a focus of study in their own right. Pollock's body of work produced during these pivotal years vacillates between figurative references and abstract formal experimentation, and bears witness to a diverse range of sources that nourished the young artist's experimentation, from Native American influences stemming from his upbringing in Arizona and California, to Mexican muralists he encountered in 1938, and from European avant-garde artists-among whom Pablo Picasso figures prominently-to the Surrealists. His experiences under Jungian psychoanalysis also left a mark on his art, and this book offers intimate insight into the artist's psyche. Through this comprehensive volume-which includes ten of Pollock's most important early works, such as Birth (1941) and She Wolf (1943), categorized into two distinctive artistic periods-readers will discover how these different influences merged to forge Pollock's distinctive and singular artistic voice. This book offers a captivating narrative of one of the twentieth century's most influential and radical artists and is essential reading for Pollock fans and students of modern art. This volume was produced in close collaboration with the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center and the Musée National Picasso-Paris to accompany an exhibition at the Musée National Picasso-Paris from October 15, 2024-January19, 2025.

Impressionism 1860-1910

In the 1860s, a style of painting emerged in Paris which fundamentally called into question the artistic concepts that had been prevalent in academies up to that time. Impressionist artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Degas now focused on their impression of the moment, which was captured in paintings depicting moods and light at certain times of the day and of the season, as well as in snapshots of modern life. This new kind of artistic worldview spread to other countries in Europe and the United States, which in turn produced numerous Impressionist painters. With more than 450 works, Impressionism 1860-1910 presents an overview of the most important Impressionist paintings.

Magritte

Magritte is published in association with a major survey of the work of the pioneering Belgian surrealist artist at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. René Magritte (1948–1967) is renowned for his thought-provoking and enigmatic paintings that challenge the viewer's perception of reality. His exploration of the subconscious and the juxtaposition of ordinary objects in surreal contexts have left an indelible mark on the art world, influencing generations of artists and thinkers. The exhibition is the first Magritte retrospective to be presented in Australia and includes approximately 100 artworks drawn from public and private collections in the Asia–Pacific, Europe and the United States. The accompanying book provides an engaging, accessible and in-depth survey of Magritte’s practice, giving audiences insights into the evolution of his art from the early 1920s until his final works of the 1960s. The book features reproductions of the 100+ works in the exhibition alongside rarely seen archival materials, commercial work and photography. The images are accompanied by four essays and an interview with Magritte (originally recorded for Belgian television in 1965), which together offer nuanced perspectives on the aesthetic foundations of his work while also considering the social and artistic context for his practice. An essay by the curator of Magritte, Nicholas Chambers, leads us through the arc of the exhibition, revealing the artist’s extraordinary capacity for innovation and reinvention. Xavier Canonne, an expert on Belgian surrealism, focuses on the artist’s milieux during the formative period of the 1920s. Natalie Dupecher, associate curator of modern art at the Menil Collection in Houston, picks up the story in the 1930s and considers the reception and promotion of Magritte’s art outside of Europe. And Belgian art historian Julie Waseige reflects on a key, underlying theme of the artist’s practice: his remarkable use of humour. Additionally, an extensive illustrated chronology compiled by Tai Spruyt charts the artist’s eventful life and career.

German Expressionism

In a time like our own, where a young generation feels a great need to change our way of living, thinking and organizing ourselves, the publication on the artist group Brücke feels particularly relevant. These young artists also wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and have ever since inspired younger generations of artists. In bright paintings with simplified forms and large fields of color they expressed rather their feelings than an external reality. They were interested in topics like man and nature, the naked body, portraits, self-portraits, the merging of life and art and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. The catalogue discusses among others how we today perceive and can take on challenging themes like inspiration from African and Oceanian colonial cultural objects and of very young female models. Artists include Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.
