History of Criminal Tudor England

From noble intrigues at the restless royal court to the rough justice of parish life, A History of Criminal Tudor England explores how law, transgression, and faith shaped a society perched between medieval order and modern ambition. In a world ruled by the rhythm of the church and the uncertainty of the seasons, theft, murder, and misfortune exposed both the desperation and the ingenuity of England’s people.Drawing on centuries of legal records and the vivid stories buried in the plea rolls and assize courts, this book uncovers a world of accidents and murders, faith and cunning. Here are joiners who built secret priest holes, vagrants who defied their parishes, and killers who escaped the noose by reciting a single verse of scripture.Through these tales of fear, faith, and fragile justice, we see Tudor England not as a distant past, but as a living, breathing society which was restless, devout, and dangerously human.

Battle of Berlin

The Battle of Berlin, the bombing of the ‘Big City’ as it was known to the crews of RAF Bomber Command, raged from 18 November 1943 to the end of the war in Europe in 1945. It is recalled here both by those in the air over capital of the Third Reich, as well as those who suffered under the bombing onslaught. At the start of the Battle of Berlin, Sir Arthur Harris had predicted that the ‘Big City’ would ‘cost between 400-500 aircraft’, but that it would also ‘cost Germany the war’. He was proved wrong on both counts. Berlin was not ‘wrecked from end to end’, as Harris predicted on 3 November 1943 – ‘if the USAAF will come in on it’ – although a considerable part of it was destroyed. And the ‘Main Battle of Berlin’ did not cost Germany the war; a grinding land campaign had yet to be fought. More than 9,000 bombing sorties were flown during the battle on round trips of about 1,200 miles to Berlin and back.Berlin was bombed by four Allied air forces between 1940 and 1945. British bombers alone dropped 45,517 tons of bombs, whilst the Americans a further 23,000 tons. By 1944, some 1.2 million people, 790,000 of them women and children, about a quarter of Berlin’s population, had been evacuated to rural areas. An effort was made to evacuate all children from Berlin, but this was defeated by parents and many evacuees who soon made their way back to the city. However, by May 1945, 1.7 million people – 40% of the population – had fled the city. This fitting tribute to those who died in the relentless struggle to knock Berlin, and hopefully Germany, out of the war resonates with eye-witness accounts and background information which the author has painstakingly investigated and researched. The result is a hugely fascinating and highly readable narrative containing very real and unique observations by British and Commonwealth aircrew and, equally importantly, the long-suffering citizens of Berlin, and well as the capital’s defenders.Up to the end of March 1945, there had been a total of 314 air raids on Berlin, eighty-five of these in the last twelve months. Estimates of the total number of dead in Berlin from air raids range from 20,000 to 50,000; the relatively low casualty figure in Berlin is partly the result of the city’s formidable air defences and shelters. The Battle of Berlin was not a defeat in absolute terms, but in the operational sense it was an offensive that Air Marshal Sir Arthur Harris and his aircrews could not win. ‘Berlin won’ concluded Sir Ralph Cochrane, the Air Officer Commanding 5 Group RAF Bomber Command. ‘It was just too tough a nut.’

The Plunge

A globe-spanning narrative adventure about how the euphoria of cold water can transform — and even extend — your life. 'Mesmerizing. Chris Ballard does a deep dive into one of the most controversial health, fitness, and athletic crazes of our time. I still loathe cold water, but I loved this book.' Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and Hidden PotentialLifelong athlete and Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard worried his days of exercise were numbered. Then he received a fateful text message about a trend taking hold around the world: submerging in freezing cold water. It wasn’t only thrill seekers or wellness gurus extolling its power. Swimmers have long known that when paired with cold, their sport delivers extraordinary rewards; now, modern research has shown that just a few minutes in cold water can deliver remarkable benefits: heightened energy and focus, reduced inflammation, and relief from depression and anxiety. In The Plunge, Ballard travels to laboratories and swims in waters around the world, from Portsmouth to the Pacific, tracing the roots of cold water swimming in ancient practices largely lost in the modern world. He immerses himself in the growing tribe of cold-water junkies of all ages, shapes and nationalities, from pioneers like Lynne Cox to visionaries like Ram Barkai, whose audacious dream of getting ice swimming into the Olympics edges closer to reality. And, from cold plunging to open water swimming to ice swimming, he tests his limits in this extreme sport, eventually becoming a US national champion, his body and mind transformed along the way. Blending history, cutting-edge science, colourful characters, and propulsive narrative storytelling, it’s a rollicking, eye-opening adventure that reveals how a single act — stepping into cold water — can unlock resilience, connection, meaning and joy.

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog

''One afternoon, in a particularly bright and glowing August, some years before I knew I was happy...''Charming, evocative and imbued with the melancholy of nostalgia, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog is Dylan Thomas''s much-loved collection of loosely autobiographical short fiction. First we meet the young schoolboy, gloriously immersed in make-believe in a shabby farmyard; then, the budding poet with his thrilling friendships and dreams of fortune; and finally, ''young Mr Thomas'', the penniless journalist who ''hoped, in a vague way, to live on women''.Shot through with the exuberance and enthusiasm of youth, these stories reveal Dylan Thomas the poet in an entirely new light, as he explores love, death, religion, adolescent sexuality and fragile male friendships in one of the twentieth century''s finest collections of short fiction.

To Have or To Hold

LONGLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE FOR CONSERVATION WRITINGA BBC WILDLIFE BEST BOOK OF 2025A thrilling exploration of nature’s symbiotic relationships by the award-winning author of Forget Me Not.What can nature teach us about living together? Investigating eight symbiotic relationships trying to survive the climate and biodiversity crises, Sophie Pavelle explains why it has never been more vital for us to understand symbiosis. Symbiotic relationships regulate ecosystems, strengthen resilience and bind pivotal connections, and nature thrives on relationships as glamorous as they are grotesque and as bizarre as they are engrossing.Symbiotic relationships don''t happen accidentally – these dynamics evolved – and species form and sever alliances everywhere, from deep within temperate rainforests to the open ocean, quiet tidal pools or chalk grasslands. In To Have or To Hold, Sophie low-carbon travels in the British Isles relishing the interconnectedness between species, celebrating the relationships underpinning natural environments and sharing some of nature’s frauds, fortune-tellers, misfits and cheaters. The natural world is built on parasitism, a cunning blend of bargaining and exploitation in the name of survival. In our relationship with the natural world, are we the parasites? Will we continue to exploit nature’s resources? Or will we vow to love and cherish what remains – shaping a more restorative life alongside nature – till death us do part?

The Flight

A young man''s passion for his father''s mistress turns tragic in this deft Russian novel by the author of modernist masterpiece The Spectre of Alexander Wolf.“The Gazdanov revival... is nothing short of a literary event.” —Times Literary Supplement Mixing psychological drama with devastating, sunsoaked romance, this modernist take on the traditional Russian 19th-century realist novel epitomised by Tolstoy delivers a timeless statement on the tension between sensuality and duty, community and freedom. While summering on the French Riviera, the young Seryozha secretly becomes the lover of the much older Liza—who is also his father''s mistress. As autumn approaches, they reluctantly part: Liza to return to Paris, Seryozha to take up his studies at university in London. When he finds out about their affair, Seryozha''s father attempts to convince Liza to leave his son, for the sake of the boy''s own happiness. She finally gives in—but a sudden, fatal catastrophe changes everything. An account of twisted love and youthful disillusionment that recalls Vladimir Nabokov and Françoise Sagan, full of secrets and reversals, Gazdanov''s second novel is proof of his wide-ranging talents. Originally written before his celebrated noir experiments, The Spectre of Alexander Wolf and The Buddha''s Return, The Flight blends tragic inevitability, complex and fractured family relationships, and a whirling cast of émigrés struggling to break through each other’s solitude to make for a devastating and compelling read.

Islands of Forgotten Daughters

LEE, author of Two Trees Make A Forest'Lush, magnetic, elegiac and absorbing' MEGHA MOHAN, author of Herlands'Skilfully crafted and beguilingly immersive' SANTANU BHATTACHARYA, author of DeviantsMeet the matriarchs of Filipino myth – defiant goddesses, powerful witches, terrifying shapeshifters – and their real-life counterparts, as Carla Montemayor journeys to discover her own ancestry and the stories of her people. When Carla Montemayor discovers that her great-great grandmother was a binukot – a girl sequestered from her family and community, trained to memorise and sing the myths of her people – this sets her on her own epic journey to uncover her ancestry. Why was she raised on European fairytales and Greek myths when the stories of her own people are so rich? And why did no one in her family speak of their illustrious binukot foremother anymor? ravelling to the Philippines to trace the lives of her female relatives, Carla discovers that, officially, her people have no history. Like many indigenous groups, their stories have been erased by colonists. It becomes her work to reconstruct and reimagine them. Weaving together the tales of her family members, who survived war, oppression, violence, displacement and more, with the myths of her people, Carla finds similarities: women with courage, resourcefulness and ambition, who fight and love with equal ferocity. Islands of Forgotten Daughters celebrates these women and tells their tales, offering a fresh perspective on Filipino history and culture. It is a rallying cry for the power of storytelling: to resist erasure, preserve identity and resonate for generations to come.
