A Terribly Nasty Business
After achieving her lifelong dream of solving a murder, bringing a killer to justice, and proving she is not, in fact, a morbid creep, Beatrice Steele feels like everything is finally falling into place. She's traded her etiquette-obsessed community of Swampshire for the big city of London, accompanied by her ever-trusty chaperone, Miss Bolton. They've settled in a lovely neighborhood, Sweetbriar, known for its proximity to the Sweet Majestic theater, picturesque pleasure gardens, and an unfortunate infestation of flying squirrels. But Beatrice's favorite part is that Sweetbriar is also home to D.S. Investigations, the new office she opened with the prickly, annoyingly logical Inspector Drake to solve the city's brutally thrilling crimes. However, nothing is turning out how Beatrice imagined it would. Sir Huxley, famed gentleman inspector and Beatrice's former crush, is still considered the real investigator in London, so the only cases left for Beatrice and Drake are lost pets and spectacles. Not that Beatrice has much time for crime-solving, anyways, as her mother still expects her to find an eligible (rich) husband to protect their family from destitution. Beatrice is struggling to balance all the demands on her and begins to wonder if she can become a true detective in a city that feels full of false promises. That is until a string of murders thrusts Beatrice and Drake into the center of a scandal that pits the neighborhood's wealthiest against the arts community, spreading fear and chaos throughout the city. As they follow the trail through bewildering ballrooms, secretive shops, and odd operas, Beatrice must survive threats to her partnership, her business, and her place in society to break the case--before it's too late.
A testben őrzött múlt
- hogyan raktározza el a test a túlterhelő és fájdalmas élményeket;
- hogyan ismerhetjük fel a trauma gyakran figyelmen kívül hagyott jeleit – például a tartós kimerültséget, a „ködös” gondolkodást vagy az indokolatlan szorongást;
- miként hatnak a testben elraktározott érzelmi sebek sejtszinten az egészségünkre – még akkor is, ha kívülről sikeresnek tűnik az életünk;
- hogyan előzhetjük meg azokat a testi változásokat, amelyek gátolják a gyógyulást;
- hogyan dolgozhatunk együtt idegrendszerünkkel a biztonságos felépülés érdekében, anélkül, hogy újra traumatizálnánk magunkat.
A testben őrzött múlt mind a személyes fejlődést keresők, mind a gyógyítók számára tökéletes, mély betekintést nyújt az elme és a test működésébe és a gyógyulás útjába.

Humanitarianism
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Humanitarian crises are a central problem of modern history and contemporary international relations. According to United Nations estimates, 300 million people required humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024 alone, due to displacement, armed conflict, food insecurity, disasters, and the consequences of climate change. The international humanitarian system, in turn, plays a powerful role in 21st century global affairs. Since the 1990s, the aid sector has ballooned in size and influence. It is now a multi-billion-dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of people globally. In a clear, accessible, and concise narrative, Humanitarianism: A Very Short Introduction explains how and why this situation came to be. In this book, historian Julia F. Irwin traces the events and trends that defined modern humanitarianism, from the eighteenth century up to the present day. It describes the origins of international humanitarian action, the development of major humanitarian organizations and movements, the evolution of international humanitarian law, and the expansion of the international humanitarian sector. It examines organized efforts to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity amid major conflicts, disasters, refugee crises, and other humanitarian emergencies. At the same time, Irwin shows how beliefs about race, gender, religion, and nationality have historically influenced humanitarian sentiments and actions. Attuned to the distinctions between wartime, postwar, and non-conflict situations, Irwin assesses criticisms waged against humanitarian actions and debates over the legitimacy of humanitarian interventions. This Very Short Introduction also teases out the complex relationship between humanitarianism, human rights, and international development. Finally, this book surveys diverse and competing humanitarian traditions throughout the world, placing humanitarian ideals and practices in a global context. A Chorus of Ears
‘One of the most eloquent thinkers about our life in language’ – The Sunday TimesA Chorus of Ears is a series of essays on voice, lyric and the persona of the poet from one of our greatest living English poets. Denise Riley contemplates how a poet's public persona can hold more significance than their actual poetry in the modern literary world. She reflects on how prize culture can transform criticism into a beauty contest, and limit our ability to meet the lyric on its own terms. What might be discovered, Riley asks, if we liberate the poem from the person of the author? From where does its own voice spring? In allowing the poem to speak, what might we hea? ncluding a foreword by leading poet and critic Don Paterson. 'One of the great poets of our time ' – New Statesman
Amplify!
Amplify! My Fight for Asian America offers a meaningful look at the real stories behind the headlines, providing Asian Americans and allies of all backgrounds a vital resource to broaden their perspective on anti-Asian hate and contribute to positive social transformation.February 24, 2020, started out like any other day for journalist and television anchor Dion Lim of San Francisco’s ABC News. Planning her pitches for the morning’s editorial meeting, she checked her Instagram account and saw a message from someone she didn’t recognize. Attached was a horrifying video in which men were beating and yelling racist slurs at an elderly Asian man who had been collecting cans in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. Lim felt compelled to investigate the story, help the man who “looked freakishly like my dad,” and bring the perpetrators to justice. Thus began Lim’s four-years-and-counting quest to bring attention to the appalling rise of anti-Asian hate and violence in America. Amplify! My Fight for Asian America brings readers on an eye-opening journey alongside Lim, who has unwittingly become a national hero for her relentless fight for Asian American visibility. Through deeply personal anecdotes about her own life as a Chinese American, exclusive interviews with survivors, activists, and historians, and incisive historical context, she provides the very first book to tackle one of the biggest political and social controversies of this century from the perspective of the AAPI community.
„Furt dokola tam blábolil: bing ding dang dong wow wow wow a zase bing ding dong wow wow wow… Vůbec jsme mu nerozuměli. Do toho se kejval, až pak spadl ze stoličky, válel se po zemi a zvracel. Ale nějakým zvláštním způsobem to bylo ono. Prostě přišel, poblil se, omdlel, no a to jsme potřebovali,“ objasňuje Al Jourgensen, jak vznikl asi nejslavnější song kapely Jesus Built My Hotrod.
Domek pana Stilburyho a jiné báchorky
Domek pana Stilburyho je próza o nesamozřejmosti rodinného štěstí. Roku 2026 prvně vychází v definitivní verzi. S ní trojice romantických hororů Duel, Dneska ráno výměna a Bagdád na Temži jako hold Robertu Louisi Stevensonovi, Edvardu Valentovi a Richardu Mathesonovi. První kluci na Marsu a další příběh jsou záměrně naivistní a parafrázují dobrodružství Štaflíka a Špagetky Aleny Munkové (*24. 9. 1926) a příhody Velkého Piráta a Šilhouna Vojtěcha Steklače. Ivo Fencl svobodně vzdal poctu milované dětské četbě, a jak míní klasik, „duše tříletého zůstane nezměněna do sta let“.
