Exquisite Mayhem

Get up close, personal, and sweaty with some of the most famous wrestlers of the 60s and 70s, as well as with the sport's feisty sub-phenomenon known as "apartment wrestling." Pitting voluptuous bikini-clad women against one another in a staged photography set, apartment wrestling is what many a male fantasy is made of. This edition explores the craze with the classic photographs of Theo Ehret capturing the participants' bare breasts and buttocks, long, strong limbs and raw, raging passion. These provocative, performative images are accompanied by an essay on wrestling by Roland Barthes, biographical photos, and an interview with Ehret.

Chinese Propaganda Posters

With his smooth, warm, red face which radiated light in all directions, Chairman Mao Zedong was a fixture in Chinese propaganda posters produced between the birth of the People's Republic in 1949 and the early 1980s. Chairman Mao, portrayed as a stoic superhero (a.k.a. the Great Teacher, the Great Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Supreme Commander), appeared in all kinds of situations (inspecting factories, smoking a cigarette with peasant workers, standing by the Yangzi River in a bathrobe, presiding over the bow of a ship, or floating over a sea of red flags), flanked by strong, healthy, ageless men and "masculinized" women and children wearing baggy, sexless, drab clothing. The goal of each poster was to show the Chinese people what sort of behavior was considered morally correct and how great the future of Communist China would be if everyone followed the same path toward utopia by uniting together. This book brings together a selection of colorful propaganda artworks and cultural artifacts from photographer Michael Wolf's vast collection of Chinese propaganda posters, many of which are now extremely rare.

Psychedelic Sex Book

Peace, love, and pudenda. How men's magazines turned hot and hippy between 1967-1972. Love, Sex and Drugs. Take the latest sex-trip with Dian Hanson. Starring all-natural flower-power hotties, these hippy, horny, hilarious images of nubile flesh and mind-bending graphics showcase a brief golden period in publishing, when men's magazines promised to recreate the wonders of libido on LSD. In a brief golden span between 1967 and 1972, the sexual revolution collided with recreational drug exploration to create "psychedelic sex." While the baby boomers blew their minds and danced naked in the streets, men's magazine publishers attempted to visually recreate the wonders of LSD, project them on a canvas of nubile hippie flesh, and dish it up to men dying for a taste of free love. Way Out, Groovie, Where It's At - each magazine title vied to convince the straight audience it offered the most authentic flower power sex trip, complete with mind-bending graphics and all-natural hippie hotties. Along the way hippies joined in the production, since what could be groovier than earning bread in your birthday suit? At its height, psychedelic sex encompassed posters, tabloids, comics, and newsstand magazines, but the most far-out examples of all were the glossy magazines from California, center of both hippie culture and the budding American porn industry. It's these sexy, silly reminders of peace, love, and pudenda we celebrate in Psychedelic Sex. So put on your beads, tune up your sitar, and let the love-in begin!

Cubism

Fractured forms: Deconstructing perspective with Picasso and peers Pioneered by Picasso and Braque, Cubism has been described asthe first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. With inspiration from African and Native American art and sculpture, its practitioners deconstructed European conventions of viewpoint, form, perspective to createflattened, fragmented, and revolutionary images.Picasso s celebrated paintingLes Demoiselles d Avignonis typically regarded as the original cubist work, with its radical fracturing of objects and figures into distinct areas, corresponding tomultiple different viewpoints. Cubism thereafter developed two distinct trends: Analytical Cubism, which continued to interweave perspectival planes in muted blacks, greys and ochre, and laterSynthetic Cubism, characterised by simpler shapes, brighter colors, and collage elements such as newspaper. This book presents the prime protagonists of Cubism, with work from artists includingPablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes, andRobert Delaunay. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions a detailed illustrated introduction plus a timeline of the most important political, cultural, and social events that took place during that period a selection of the most important works of the epoch, each presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and accompanying interpretation, as well as a portrait and brief biography of the artist "

Ed Fox - Vol. 2 DVD Ed.

Our first Ed Fox title, Glamour From the Ground Up, introduced the heir to the peculiar photographic niche long ruled by the great Elmer Batters. California native Fox had not even heard of Batters when he first started photographing women with an emphasis on their feet. In fact, he thought he was the only young man who checked out a woman's feet before her face and most of the time couldn't meet his models" eyes for fear they'd discern his secret. Then he became the official foot photographer for Leg Show magazine, just months before Batters' death, and learned of the big shoes he had to fill at the same time he realized there were thousands of men just like himself - except without the talent to capture their passion on film, or as today, in pixels. Since then, Ed Fox has become internationally known for a sensual photographic style that captures every curve of a woman's body, right down to the tips of her toes. In Ed Fox II he brings us voluptuous new models, arresting locations - many blending the desert landscapes of Southern California with Fox's passion for automobiles - and fantasies mild to extra spicy, all shot in warm, caressing natural light. And, like Glamour From the Ground Up, Ed Fox II comes with a 60-minute original DVD, bringing the still photos to vibrant life. This edition's special Panic Cover is reversible to a realistic-looking academic book to keep the real contents hidden from your annoying boss or even help you impress an attractive onlooker!

Modigliani

Along came Amedeo: A unique type of beauty In endless odes to the female form, Amedeo Modigliani(1884 1920) traced elongated bodies, almond eyes, and his own name into art history. His languid female subjects are as instantly recognizable as they arestartling, sensual, and swan-necked.Modigliani's unique figuration corresponded to his own personal idea of beauty, but drew upon a rich variety of visual influences, including contemporaryCubism, African carvings, Cambodian sculptures, and 13th century painting from his native Italy. Although most renowned for his nude females, he applied similar stylistic techniques to portraits of male artistic contemporaries such asPablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, andChaim Soutine. With key works from his highly individualistic repertoire, this book introduces Modigliani's brief but revered career at the heart of Paris' early modernist hotbed. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions "

Mucha

With his instantly recognizable decorative style, Czech artist and Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) defined the look of the fin-de-siecle. In evocative shades of peach, gold, ochre and olive, his seductive compositions of patterns, flowers and beautiful women became a mainstay of illustration, posters, postcards, and advertising designs of the day. In particular, his posters of star actress Sarah Bernhardt have become paradigms of the Belle Epoque years. Alongside this delicate decoration, Mucha also harbored committed nationalist beliefs. With monumental works such as The Slav Epic, he expressed his staunch support for Pan-Slavism, promoting the political independence of the Czech and Slavic nations from the Austro-Hungari an Empire. In a period of much European turbulence, he was also a Masonic philosopher and pacifist, with many humanist ideals.

Expressionism

This visceral life: Seeing the world through Expressionist eyes Sharp angles, strange forms, lurid colors, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks ofExpressionism, the twentieth century movement thatprioritized emotion over objective reality. Though particularly present in Germany and Austria, the movement s approach flourished internationally and is today hailed asone of the most influential shifts in art history. With leading groupsDie Brucke(The Bridge) andDer Blaue Reiter(The Blue Rider), and key players such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, andEmil Nolde, the Expressionists disowned Impressionism, which they regarded as man lowered to the position of a gramophone record of the outer world, to depict instead araw and visceral experienceof life as it was felt, rather than seen on the surface. Their paintings brim with emotive force, conveyed in particular throughintense and non-naturalistic color palettes, loose brushwork, and thick textures.Covering the group s stylistic tendencies, influences, and most important protagonists, this introductory book explores the Expressionist panorama of moods, ideas, and emotions and their abiding quest for deep authenticity.

David Chipperfield

"Architecture has to explain itself. It has got to be very clear, what you might call simple." Born in 1953, David Chipperfield worked for both Norman Foster and Richard Rogers before establishing a reputation for himself in Japan in the early 80s, and setting up David Chipperfield Architects in 1984. The practice, which now operates out of London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai has gone on to win over 50 national and international competitions. Suspicious of "starchitecture". Chipperfield adheres instead to a meticulously crafted minimalism in which volumes and light come together in masterful harmony. Less concerned with an immediately recognizable, individual style, he rather aspires to an architecture founded on collaboration, ideas, and excellence. His buildings are intended as physically immediate spaces in which "a sort of ordinariness" becomes special, and the individual structure co-exists with broader concepts of city building. Chipperfleld's vision has driven major projects around the globe, from the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa, USA to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, UK and the famed reconstruction of the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. Recent work includes the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the expansion of the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, USA. This monograph features twenty four of Chipperfield's most significant projects, with a thorough introduction, detailed descriptions, and an extensive interview covering his major influences, and guiding principles on structure, space, and urban experience.

100 Contemporary Wood Buildings

Timberland: The wooden structures of the 21st century Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen afabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuringfollies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in theMetropol Parasol in Sevilleby Jurgen Mayer H, and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at theFinnish Forest Research Instituteby SARC Architects, or the Termas Geometricas Hot Springs Complexby German del Sol.True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect s vision and innovation, as well as investigating thetechniques, trends, and principlesthat have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood s enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian beauty and simplicity.
