This compilation of projects from around the world pays special attention to the particular features of each space, within the common restriction of a limited surface area. The range of projects will be of interest to not only architects and designers but also residents of modern cities, therebly creating basic tool for understanding how architects, designers, or owners of small apartments approach a project involving minimal living space.

The limitations on the availability of space force both companies and designers to give priority to an office's functions in the design process. Projects that confront a need to scale down generally share common features. With respect to furnishings, for example, internal partitions are highly important. New materials and light structures have made inflexible cubicles a relic of the past. Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the worlds most prominent architects, but also an engineer and an artist. With recent projects such as the stadiums for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens or the new railway station in Ličge, Belgium, he has reach ed a level of undeniable notoriety in Europe and continues to move further ahead.
