Francis Bacon: Human Presence
Featuring works from the 1950s onwards, this book explores Francis Bacon’s deep connection to portraiture and how he challenged traditional definitions of the genre.
From his responses to portraiture by earlier artists, to large-scale paintings memorialising lost lovers, works from private and public collections will showcase Bacon’s life story. As well as the artist’s self-portraits, sitters include Lucian Freud, Isabel Rawsthorne and lovers Peter Lacy and George Dyer.
The first publication in over 20 years dedicated to the portraits of Francis Bacon, this book accompanies the exhibition of the same name opening at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in October 2024. From his renowned triptychs and paintings of ghostly figures, to tender and psychologically revealing individual portraits, the figurative works displayed in this publication chart the development of a groundbreaking artist, highlighting the influence of his peers and other artists.
Edited and with introductory texts by National Portrait Gallery curator, Rosie Broadley, Francis Bacon: Portraits also features biographies and photographs of Bacon and his circle, bringing lesser-told stories to the fore. A series of short essays from a range of contemporary thinkers and experts on Bacon explore the individuality of the artist through different lenses, providing fresh perspectives on the artist, his portraits and his world.

A new selection of letters, statements, and interviews reveals the preoccupations, thoughts, and ideas of Francis Bacon, one of the twentieth century’s most influential and important artists.
The documents selected for Francis Bacon: A Self-Portrait in Words illustrate Bacon’s sharp wit and ability to express complex ideas in highly personal, memorable language. Included here are not only letters to friends, patrons, and fellow artists, but also intriguing notes and lists of paintings. They often come with a sketch as an aide-mémoire or an injunction to himself as he worked in the studio, and many have only come to light since his death.
Bacon's letters mirror and reveal his dominant preoccupations at different points throughout his long career. Most of Bacon's letters have never been published and include several that he wrote to author Michael Peppiatt. Particularly intriguing is the record of a dream that he jotted down, outlining impossibly beautiful paintings he had conjured up in his sleep. Together with photographs, archive material, and works by the artist are numerous reproductions of Bacon's characteristic handwriting, from the briefest jottings and notes to more extensive letters and statements.
Bacon frequently came up with memorable epithets and definitions. He delighted in doing with words what he set out to do in painting: "I like phrases that cut me." Peppiatt explores the personal legacy of one of the twentieth century's most important painters and presents a compelling verbal self-portrait that reveals both man and artist.

Nová Atlantída
Utopický román Francisa Bacona Nová Atlantída bol pravdepodobne napísaný roku 1623, ale publikovaný až v roku 1627, rok po autorovej smrti jeho kaplánom, priateľom a literárnym exekútorom Dr. Williamom Rawleym. V predhovore toto dielo Rawley charakterizuje ako „myšlienku, ktorú môj pán napísal preto, aby v nej predstavil vzor a opis ,akadémie? založenej k vytváraniu veľkých a obdivuhodných diel slúžiacich ľuďom k šťastiu a nazvanej Šalamúnov dom či Spoločenstvo diela šiestich dní.“ Dej je zasadený do prítomnosti (teda Baconovej prítomnosti), ale popiera Platónove vnímanie Atlantídy a zahŕňa zásadné klasické, biblické a kresťanské prvky, ktoré sa nájdu v Baconovej predstave utopickej spoločnosti žijúcej v mieri, priateľstve a dobročinnosti na ostrove nazvanom Bensalem (Syn Pokoja). Tam ľudia majú „svetlo“, poriadok a spoločnosť mysliteľov zoskupených v „akadémii“, ktorá je „zasvätená štúdiu prác a stvorení Božích“ a „nájdeniu pravej povahy všetkých vecí, aby sa poznávaním stvoreného diela vzdávala väčšia sláva Bohu a človeku, aby z jeho plodov plynul väčší úžitok“. V podstate román hovorí o type morálnej, slušnej a priateľskej utopickej spoločnosti, ktorej vládne demokraticky volený parlament s panovníkom, v ktorej existuje organizovaná vedecká spoločnosť, známa ako Šalamúnov dom. Ten vedie Prozreteľnosť a zaoberá sa skúmaním záhad medzi nebom a zemou a dobročinných využití. Román polo-alegorickým spôsobom prezentuje Baconovu víziu toho, ako si myslel, alebo skôr veril, že môžu fungovať myšlienky jeho Veľkého Obrodenia. Toto zhrnul v slovách Otca Šalamúnovho domu, „zmyslom našej inštitúcie je poznávať príčiny a skryté pohyby vecí, a rozširovať hranice ľudského panstva na všetky mysliteľné veci“. Bacon v Novej Atlantíde zobrazuje vedecký základ vytvorený podobným spôsobom ako ideálny „baconovský“ zákonný systém, na ktorý dohliada súd, v ktorom „by boli krok za krokom odhalené nepísané zákony prírody a spoločnosti vedcami, ktorí by boli vzdelaní ako právnici, aby sa vyhli predsudkom, ovplyvňovaniu, dogme, ideológii a moci“. Čo Nová Atlantída zdôrazňuje najviac zo všetkého, je fakt, že pre rozvoj vedy, ktorá je založená na láske a súcite, oslobodení od nenásytnosti a prekonaní sebeckosti, je absolútnou podstatou morálny základ a dobročinný zámer Baconovho Veľkého Obrodenia.
