Toto strhující námořní dobrodružství, vydané v roce 1838, pojednává o chlapci z Nové Anglie, Pymovi, který se spolu s kapitánovým synem Augustusem načerno dostane na velrybářskou loď. Oba chlapci se opakovaně ocitají na pokraji smrti nebo jim hrozí, že budou objeveni, a jsou svědky mnoha děsivých událostí, včetně vzpoury, kanibalismu a zběsilých pronásledování.

Edgar Allan Poe a 19. század első felében élt amerikai költő és novellista, művészete azonban nem volt sem tipikusan 19. századi, sem tipikusan amerikai. Szürrealizmusba hajló és gyakran horrorisztikus látásmódja sokkal inkább a 20. századot idézi, és műveinek egyik korai fordítója, Charles Baudelaire épp azért magasztalta Poe-t, mert az író szerinte nagyon nem amerikai, és Baudelaire sokkal közelebb érezte Poe művészetét a saját, illetve a francia századvég szellemiségéhez.
A kötetben szereplő írások a szerző klasszikussá vált, leghíresebb novellái, melyek ezúttal Gy. Horváth László fordításában jelennek meg, aki sok apró részletét tekintve a korábbi fordításoknál pontosabban adja vissza az eredeti szöveg nyelvi megoldásait, de a szöveg szuggesztivitása és költőisége semmiben sem marad el a korábbi fordítókétól, akik között olyan jeles írókat találunk, mint Babits Mihály.
A címadó novella, "Az Usher-ház pusztulása" talán a legnyomasztóbb valamennyi történet közül. Az elbeszélő az ideg-összeroppanás szélén álló egykori barátját látogatja meg egy pusztulásnak indult kastélyban, s bár ezt a nyomasztó hangulatot nehéz tovább fokozni, Poe-nak végtelenségig kifinomult nyelvi eszközeivel és mondatainak zeneiségével ez mégis sikerül.
