The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. Hangja a Szentivánéji álom táncos könnyedségére, tündéri játékosságra emlékeztet. Foalakja: Falstaff a IV. Henrikben hódította meg eloször a közönséget. A pocakos lovag itt már kissé más, öregebb és ostobább, de éppen olyan mulatságos, mint a IV. Henrikben. Hetykesége most halkabb, hiszen alaposan megcsúfolják a windsori polgárasszonyok. A darab Shakespeare egyetlen olyan muve, melyben a vezeto szerepeket javarészt a polgárok játsszák. Iróniája a nemesurak ostobaságát és kapzsiságát teszi nevetségessé.
