Zimní pohádka patří do nevelké skupiny Shakespearových pozdních her, které se dnes žánrově označují jako romance (Perikles, Cymbelín, Bouře). Sdílí s nimi rodinné téma a závěrečný motiv odpuštění, usmíření a znovunalezené harmonie.
Pro nás je hra zajímavá už tím, že se částečně odehrává v Čechách. Díky této okolnosti hra sehrála významnou roli v české kultuře v době vrcholícího národního obrození. Jedna z hlavních postav hry Perdita se ve slavnostním pražském průvodu Shakespearových postav v roce 1864 proměnila v symbol znovuzrození české národní kultury a umění. Perdita ars bohemica byla posléze znovu nalezena v symbolickém aktu položení základního kamene Národního divadla, který se slavnostmi roku 1864 úzce souvisel.
