Stylistics
This book deals with the study of style in language, how styles can be recognized, and their features. It examines how style is used in literary and non-literary texts, and how familiarity with style is a matter of socialization. The author also discusses the relationship between text and discourse, the production and reception of meaning as a dynamic contextualized interaction, the question of perspective and the variable representation of reality, and how stylistics can complement literary criticism. The final chapter deals with social reading and ideological positioning, including some thoughts on feminist stylistics and critical discourse analysis.

Books That Shaped Art History
The Books That Shaped Art History reassesses the impact of some of the most important texts of art history published during the twentieth century. Each of the sixteen incisive chapters focuses on a single title and is written by a leading art historian, curator or one of the promising scholars of today's generation. In bringing these cross-generational contributions together, this book provides a varied and invaluable overview of the history of art, told through its seminal texts. The sixteen books include Nikolaus Pevsners gospel of Modernism, Pioneers of the Modern Movement, Alfred Barrs now legendary monograph on Matisse, E.H. Gombrichs Art and Illusion, Clement Greenbergs Art and Culture, which had a seismic impact when it was published in 1961 and Rosalind Krausss The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Modernist Myths, which introduced structuralist and post-structuralist philosophy into art historical study. Initiated by and prepared under the auspices of The Burlington Magazine, each chapter - with writers including John Elderfield, Richard Verdi and Susie Nash - analyses a single major book, mapping the intellectual development of its author, setting out the premises and argument of the book, discussing its position within the field of art history, and looking at its significance in the context both of its initial reception and its legacy. An introduction by John-Paul Stonard explores how art history has been forged by these outstanding contributions to scholarship, as well as by the dialogues and ruptures between them. The book is supplemented by contextual essays summarising the achievements of each art historian and offering a detailed publication history of their texts, with suggestions for further reading. Enlivening debates and questioning the very status of art history itself, The Books That Shaped Art History is a concise and brilliant overview of the discipline and an invaluable resource for students, teachers, bibliophiles and all those interested in visual culture and its histories.

No Problem:Cologne / New York 1984-1989
In the words of Peter Schjeldahl, writing recently in "The New Yorker" about the exhibition "No Problem: Cologne/New York 1984-1989" at David Zwirner in New York, "the show's cast of artists amounts to a retrospective shopping list of what would matter and endure in art of the era." Canonizing that moment, this seminal publication examines the latter half of the 1980s through the lens of the art scenes in Cologne-arguably the European center of the contemporary art world at that time-and New York. While a number of established Cologne-based gallerists, including Karsten Greve, Paul Maenz, Rolf Ricke, Michael Werner and Rudolf Zwirner, had already begun shaping the European reception of American art in the previous decade, the 1980s marked a period during which art being produced in and around Cologne gained international attention. A burgeoning gallery scene supported the emerging work of artists based in the region, with gallerists such as Gisela Capitain, Rafael Jablonka, Max Hetzler and Monika Sprüth showing artists such as Walter Dahn, Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen, Rosemarie Trockel and others. These German artists were exhibited alongside artists such as Robert Gober, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman and Christopher Wool. Conversely, the work of German artists was presented in New York, with breakout exhibitions at galleries such as Barbara Gladstone, Metro Pictures, Luhring Augustine and other significant venues. Important museum exhibitions that explored work on both sides of the Atlantic also set the tone for this dialogue, among them "Europa/Amerika" (Museum Ludwig, 1986) and "A Distanced View" (New Museum, 1986). Big, bold and vibrant, this Pentagram-designed publication revives the conversation, reproducing in full color every one of the over 100 artworks by 22 international artists included in this massive exhibition-one of the largest in David Zwirner's history. The book also features new scholarship by Diedrich Diederichsen and Bob Nickas, an illustrated timeline for both cities and compelling archival material-from documentary photographs from the period and reproductions of Cologne's historic "Spex Magazine" to reviews of exhibitions from the period. This catalogue encapsulates the energy, heart and "dissonance of styles"-in the words of Schjeldahl-embodied by this fecund moment in global art history.

How To Look At Outsider Art
Outsider Art has become a catchall phrase for everything that is raw, untutored, and extreme in art. Recently, it has grown from being the hobby of a few collectors to a movement of significant importance in the art world, and is on the verge of being integrated into the contemporary art mainstream. However, even many aficionados can't say precisely what Outsider Art is or identify the best artists, baffled by a world without rules. How to Look at Outsider Art gives an overview of the field's most exciting works, some of them never before published in book form. It offers guidelines for aesthetic and collecting judgments, and gives compelling accounts of some of the field's spectacular successes and equally visible failures. This book features case studies, which provide indepth examinations of individual works by particular artists and discusses their critical and popular reception.

Lying on the Couch
From the bestselling author of Love's Executioner and When Nietzsche Wept comes a provocative exploration of the unusual relationships three therapists form with their patients. Seymour is a therapist of the old school who blurs the boundary of sexual propriety with one of his clients. Marshal, who is haunted by his own obsessive-compulsive behaviors, is troubled by the role money plays in his dealings with his patients. Finally, there is Ernest Lash. Driven by his sincere desire to help and his faith in psychoanalysis, he invents a radically new approach to therapy -- a totally open and honest relationship with a patient that threatens to have devastating results. Exposing the many lies that are told on and off the psychoanalyst's couch, Lying on the Couch gives readers a tantalizing, almost illicit, glimpse at what their therapists might really be thinking during their sessions. Fascinating, engrossing and relentlessly intelligent, it ultimately moves readers with a denouement of surprising humanity and redemptive faith.

Classics: A Very Short Introduction
This Very Short Introduction to Classics links a haunting temple on a lonely mountainside to the glory of ancient Greece and the grandeur of Rome, and to Classics within modern culture-from Jefferson and Byron to Asterix and Ben-Hur. We are all Classicists - we come into touch with the Classics daily: in our culture, politics, medicine, architecture, language, and literature. What are the true roots of these influences, however, and how do our interpretations of these aspects of the Classics differ from their original reception? This introduction to the Classics begins with a visit to the British Museum to view the frieze which once decorated the Apollo Temple at Bassae. Through these sculptures, John Henderson and Mary Beard prompt us to consider the significance of Classics as a means of discovery and enquiry, its value in terms of literature, philposophy, and culture, and its importance as a source of imagery.

Between The World And Me
#1 "NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY "The New York Times Book Review The Washington Post People "Entertainment Weekly "Vogue Los Angeles Times Chicago Tribune Newsday Vulture Library Journal Publishers Weekly" " "Hailed by Toni Morrison as required reading, a bold and personal literary exploration of America s racial history by the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States ("The New York Observer") " This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it. " In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of race, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? "Between the World and Me "is Ta-Nehisi Coates s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son and readers the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, "Between the World and Me "clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward. Praise for "Between the World and Me" Powerful and passionate . . . profoundly moving . . . a searing meditation on what it means to be black in America today. Michiko Kakutani, "The New York Times" Brilliant . . . [Coates] is firing on all cylinders, and it is something to behold: a mature writer entirely consumed by a momentous subject and working at the extreme of his considerable powers at the very moment national events most conform to his vision. "The Washington Post" I ve been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. The language of "Between the World and Me, "like Coates s journey, is visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive. As profound as it is revelatory. Toni Morrison Abrilliant thinker at the top of his powers, Coates has distilled four hundred years of history and his own anguish and wisdom into a prayer for his beloved son and an invocation to the conscience of his country. An instant classic and a gift to us all. Isabel Wilkerson, author of "The Warmth of Other Suns" I know that this book is addressed to the author sson, and by obvious analogy to all boys and young men of color as they pass, inexorably, into harm s way. I hope that I will be forgiven, then, for feeling that Coates was speaking to me, too, one father to another. Michael Chabon"
The Blade artist
Jim Francis has finally found the perfect life - and is now unrecognisable, even to himself. A successful painter and sculptor, he lives quietly with his wife, Melanie, and their two young daughters, in an affluent beach town in California. Some say he's a fake and a con man, while others see him as a genuine visionary. But Francis has a very dark past, with another identity and a very different set of values. When he crosses the Atlantic to his native Scotland, for the funeral of a murdered son he barely knew, his old Edinburgh community expects him to take bloody revenge. But as he confronts his previous life, all those friends and enemies - and, most alarmingly, his former self - Francis seems to have other ideas. When Melanie discovers something gruesome in California, which indicates that her husband's violent past might also be his psychotic present, things start to go very bad, very quickly. The Blade Artist is an elegant, electrifying novel - ultra violent but curiously redemptive - and it marks the return of one of modern fiction's most infamous, terrifying characters, the incendiary Francis Begbie from Trainspotting.
