King of Fashion - The autobiography of Paul Poiret
Paul Poiret (1879-1944) led the fashion world in the first decade of the twentieth century and his autobiography tells the extraordinary story of his meteoric rise to fame. From his humble Parisian childhood to his debut as a couturier, to his experiences during the First World War, Poiret reveals all in this captivating tale, first published in 1931. An astute businessman, Poiret translated the spirit of Art Deco into revolutionary garments, and his memoir brings this astonishing period to life.
Furniture of Carlo Mollino
Carlo Mollino (1905-73), the son of a prominent engineer of the city of Turin, graduated with honors from the Royal School of Architecture in Turin in 1931. He joined his father's firm in the same year, only to leave to pursue an independent and highly original career in design and architecture seven years later. From the start, both his interests and personality set him apart from his contemporaries.Influenced by the Second Futurism movement and the Surrealist avant-gardes, he was active in an impressive number of fields, including aeronautics, automobile design, art, photography, set design, town planning, furniture, interior decoration and architecture. Highlights from his architectural output include the headquarters of the Societa Ippica Torinese (1935-9) and the Teatro Regio Torinese (1966), both in Turin. Mollino was able to bring together various forms of expression through his profound artistic research. His furniture was based on organic shapes, such as tree branches, animal horns and the human body - the female profile figuring prominently in his design work. These pieces evolved from the appreciation of the shapes of Art Nouveau and the architect Antoni Gaudi, and were more expressive and sculptural than those being produced in Milan at the same time. Most of his furniture designs were site specific one-offs for especially commissioned interiors and were manufactured by the Apelli &, Varesio joinery in Turin. This has ensured that these pieces are very rarely available on the market and are highly valued by furniture collectors, as proven by the recent sale at Christie's of one of Mollino's tables for the record price of $3.8 million.Beyond the sculptural aesthetics of his furniture, his designs involved thorough research into materials and technology. He developed a complex construction technique whereby the structure seemed liberated by the weight of the material, as clearly seen in the glass and bentwood Arabesque table (1949), still in production by Zanotta. His famous interiors were richly decorated with fabric, used not only as upholstery but also as spatial device. He aimed to create architecture and interiors that could be manipulated by the user, as with the innovative lighting system for the Miller House (1937), which was mounted on a curving track and could be moved along the ceiling of the house. The Furniture of Carlo Mollino presents for the first time Mollino's complete furniture and interior design. Including drawings and archival photographs, it represents the most comprehensive record of this part of Mollino's production. Realized in collaboration with the Museo Casa Mollino and written by the Museum's curators Napoleone Ferrari and Fulvio Ferrari, this monograph emphasizes the contemporary significance of Mollino's groundbreaking oeuvre.

Wright vol. 3 xl
This title presents the Wright stuff. It is the definitive publication on America's greatest architect. The three-volume monograph features all of Wright's designs (numbering approximately 1100), both realized and unrealized. Volume 3 covers the postwar years and the 'living architecture' period. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of all time; indeed, his work virtually ushered in the modern era and remains highly influential today. His wide-ranging and paradigm-shifting oeuvre is the subject of Taschen's three-volume monograph that covers all of his designs (numbering approximately 1100), both realized and unrealized. Made in cooperation with the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, this collection leaves no stone unturned in examining and paying tribute to Wright's life and work. From his early Prairie Houses (typified by the Robie House) to the Usonian concept home and progressive 'living architecture' buildings to late projects like the spiral Guggenheim Museum in New York and the development of his fantastic vision of a better tomorrow via his concept of the 'living city', all of the phases of Wright's career are painstakingly described and illustrated herein. Author and preeminent Wright expert Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer highlights the latest research and gives fresh insight into the work, providing new dating for many of the plans and houses. A plethora of personal photos gives readers a feeling of what it was like to work in Frank Lloyd Wright's fellowship, traveling each spring from Taliesin West to the old Taliesin complex in Wisconsin and returning the next fall to spend the winter in sunny Arizona again. Volume 1 is dedicated to the early Chicago years and Prairie Houses, the period which provoked a profound influence on European architects. Volume 2 deals with the work after World War I, beginning with the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and covering Wright's quest to design affordable houses with systematic construction methods and the Usonian concept house, with the forest-sited villa Fallingwater being the dramatic climax. Volume 3 starts after World War II, when Wright's organic 'living architecture' introduced ideas for the use of solar energy and curved open spaces. In addition to the Guggenheim museum, the postwar era also saw extraordinary projects such as Wright's plans for a new Baghdad, his only realized high-rise tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the crystal figure of the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and an endless row of houses that reached new complexity by floor plans based on hexagons and playing with intersecting angles.

Georg Baselitz
A prolific artist with a protean output, Georg Baselitz has rethought the conventions of a range of media, predominantly painting and sculpture, over the course of a career of some sixty years. Born in 1938, Baselitz was expelled from art school in East Berlin in 1956 for 'socio-political immaturity', and moved to the western half of the city. By the late 1950s, he had rejected the dominant tendencies of both sides of the country and his singular achievement was to reintroduce the figure, compromised and discredited though it was by both Nazism and Communism, into art. By drawing attention to art by 'outsiders', such as psychiatric patients, and invoking a Parisian model of existentialist art and literature, Baselitz proposed an alternative European tradition that did not eliminate the human subject.
In alluding later to movements in German painting such as Expressionism as well as to artists like Munch, he also consciously rehabilitated the kind of art that was condemned by Hitler as 'degenerate'. The book follows the development of Baselitz's unique style from his earliest work through to the most recent creations of his eighth decade. Calvocoressi's masterful construction of a chronological narrative helps us to evaluate Baselitz's work in terms of the disruptions of his life - historical upheavals witnessed alongside an astonishing career.

The Naked Nude
The story of the nude in art in our times, told by a popular art historian with a rare gift for sharing her passions and ideas.
The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless - its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clark's classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with today's depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time.
Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection - an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone. The final chapter illustrates radical developments in art and culture over the last decade, focusing in particular on artworks by women, trans artists and artists of colour. Borzello links these works to their art-historical and political predecessors, demonstrating the continually unending capacity of the nude to disrupt traditional hierarchies and gender categories in life and art.
If Then
The Simulmatics Corporation, founded in 1959, mined data, targeted voters, accelerated news, manipulated consumers, destabilized politics, and disordered knowledge--decades before Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Cambridge Analytica. Silicon Valley likes to imagine it has no past but the scientists of Simulmatics are the long-dead grandfathers of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.
Borrowing from psychological warfare, they used computers to predict and direct human behavior, deploying their "People Machine" from New York, Cambridge, and Saigon for clients that included John Kennedy's presidential campaign, the New York Times, Young & Rubicam, and, during the Vietnam War, the Department of Defence.
In If Then, distinguished Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer, Jill Lepore, unearths from the archives the almost unbelievable story of this long-vanished corporation, and of the women hidden behind it. In the 1950s and 1960s, Lepore argues, Simulmatics invented the future by building the machine in which the world now finds itself trapped and tormented, algorithm by algorithm.

Túlélte-e a középosztály?
Ez a könyv annyiban különbözik a hasonló témájú írásoktól, hogy a családi események élményszerű elmesélésén túl korrajzot ad, és választ keres a címben megfogalmazott kérdésre is. Tagadó és igenlő érveket a szerző saját középosztálybéli, közhivatalnok családtagjainak élettörténeteiből merít.
A könyv első generációs szereplői: a köztisztviselői pályafutásának jelentős részét a Monarchia idején teljesítő nagyapa és családja. Testvére budapesti rendőrfőkapitányként már a húszas években veszi fel a küzdelmet mind a szélsőbal-, mind a szélsőjobboldali erőkkel. Sógora a Honvédelmi Minisztérium helyettes államtitkáraként ment nyugdíjba, ezután gazdálkodni kezdett saját földjén, 1951-ben kuláklistára került.
A harmadik generációs vonulat a szerző és tizenkét unokatestvére, akik a II. világháború idején születtek, felnőtt életüket részben Magyarországon, részben emigrációban töltötték. Közös gyermekkori fényképük 1947-ben készült, 40 év múlva 1987-ben ismét találkoztak. Ők is megpróbálták túlélni a 20. századot.

Regény a titokról.
A világon minden mindennel összecseng, rímel. Ezek a rímek, mint a tövig bevert szögek tartják össze a világot, hogy szét ne hulljon." - Mihail Siskin
Mihail Pavlovics Siskin orosz író 1961. január 18-án született Moszkvában. Apai nagyapja a kuláktalanítás során egy szibériai építkezésen pusztult el, nagyanyja két fiúgyermekével felmenekült a fővárosba, ahol takarításból élt. Az egyik fiú, Borisz a háborúban fogságba esett, s 1942-ben egy hamis feljelentés alapján agyonlőtték. Halálát megbosszulni akaró testvére - Mihail Siskin édesapja - tengeralattjáró-tisztként végigharcolta a nagy honvédő háborút, s helytállásáért kétszer is kitüntették a Vörös Zászló Érdemrenddel.
Ezután öt évig tanított a moszkvai 444-es számú iskolában. 1995 óta Svájcban lakik, itt ismerte meg második feleségét, a szlavista Francesca Stocklint. Az utóbbi években kizárólag irodalmi munkásságából él. 2011-ben ismét megnősült, felesége Jevgenyija Frolkova fotóművész.
1993-ban a Známja folyóirat odaítéli neki a legjobb elsőkötetes író díját. Az igazi bemutatkozás az Izmail bevétele című kötet, 2000-ben megkapja érte a Könyvkiadók Díját. Következő regénye, a Vénusz hajtincse 2005-ben nemzeti bestseller, egy évre rá a Nagy Könyv díjjal jutalmazzák. A 2010-ben elkészült Levélregény 2011-ben az év könyve lett Oroszországban.

The Ticket Collector from Belarus
'Brilliantly gripping' Sunday Times; 'Compelling' Daily Mail; 'Heart-rending' Sunday Telegraph; 'Excellent' The Times; 'Engrossing' Independent
The UK's only war crimes trial took place in 1999 and had its origins in the horrors of the Holocaust, but only now in The Ticket Collector from Belarus can the full story be told.
The Ticket Collector from Belarus tells the remarkable story of two interwoven journeys. Ben-Zion Blustein and Andrei Sawoniuk were childhood friends in 1930s Domachevo, a holiday and health resort in what is now Belarus. During the events that followed the Nazi invasion in 1941, they became the bitterest of enemies. After the war, Ben-Zion made his way to Israel, and 'Andrusha the bastard' to England, where he found work as a British Rail ticket collector in London.
They next confronted each other in the Old Bailey, over half a century later, where one was the principal prosecution witness, and the other charged with a fraction of the number of murders he was alleged to have committed. There was no physical evidence, just one man's word against another, leaving the jury with a series of agonising dilemmas: Could any witness statement be trusted so long after the event? Was Andrusha a brutal killer, a hapless pawn or a scapegoat? And were his furious protests a sign of guilt or the justified anger of an innocent old man?
Mike Anderson was gripped by the story, and so began his quest to find the truth about this astonishing case and the people at its heart. As he discovered, it was even more remarkable than he could ever have imagined.

They retreat to the quiet intensity of the mountains and begin to build a life together. But as Miguel's past catches up with him, Katherine too is forced to re-examine her relationships: with her lover, her painting and the homeland she only thought she knew...The South is the book that introduced readers to the astonishing gifts of Colm Toibin, winning the Irish Times First Fiction Award in 1991. Amerika
Karl Rossman has been banished by his parents to America, following a family scandal. There, with unquenchable optimism, he throws himself into the strange experiences that lie before him as he slowly makes his way into the interior of the great continent.
Although Kafka's first novel (begun in 1911 and never finished), can be read as a menacing allegory of modern life, it is also infused with a quite un-Kafkaesque blitheness and sunniness, brought to life in this lyrical translation that returns to the original manuscript of the book.
A vendée-i mészárlás
Reynald Secher (1955-) francia történész. Több történelmi mű szerzője, de a legnagyobb hatású műve a vendée-i népirtásról szóló.
