Eloször egy kacér fiatalasszony, Katinka feledteti vele a célt, aztán Decséry foispánék szolgálatában az érvényesülés vágya érinti meg. A drámáját fogadó közöny is arra ösztökéli, hogy hagyjon fel próbálkozásaival. A végso kísértés a legnagyobb: festeni kezd, és szép sikert ér el. Emiatt még nem kellene szakítania sem nagyanyjával sem eddigi életmódjával. De színészbarátai nyomorúságát hallva Kálmán hazajön olaszországi festo-körútjáról. Végleg az írásnak szenteli magát és vállalja nagyanyja sírig tartó haragját.
